Let’s be real. It’s hard to tell what’s authentic and what’s fake in today’s world. No doubt, some forms of technology are incredibly helpful and save time – which is valuable. But there’s a fine line between using it as a tool and losing what really matters. Losing what’s real. People’s minds have also shifted to think that everything must be absolutely perfect. It does not. Throughout the years taking photos and covering shows for the magazine, we have learned that the best moments captured are the candid ones. The photos taken before or after the set photos are done sometimes are the photos you want the most. The photos taken when no one realizes there is a camera on them. Sometimes it’s imperfections that make things better. It’s vital to not lose what’s authentic in an effort to keep up with daily trends. Why do we print The Showtimes? Not only is it a powerful tool for advertisers to market what they are selling, it’s a tangible thing people can hold on to, keep and return to. To this day, we have old cattle ads torn out from magazines hanging on our barn walls. We have framed pictures in our home from past issues we were featured in. They captured moments that were so special to our family. Being able to share
or promote something
instantly online is a must in today’s world – but does not replace the value of holding something in your hands and can go back to it time and time again.
This Fall Edition of The Showtimes features some of the top sales, genetics and products in the country as well as full coverage and special features on Champions from the State Fairs. We also highlight a couple as our newest Hall of Fame inductees who have dedicated their lives to the cattle world. You’ll want to read this issue cover to cover! Jesus teaches in Mark 4:35-41 “ 35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd be- hind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!””
I can imagine the disciples on the boat were terrified when the storm came and that’s what they were focused on. Even with Jesus in the boat, they were scared and cried out to him. Jesus doesn’t promise that there won’t be storms, but he is always there with us. He will calm the storms, or carry us through the storms, but we are never facing the storm alone. The storms are temporary, but Jesus is eternal and promises to be there always. Just like a show animal getting ripped away from their buddy, we need to realize that just because we can’t see Jesus, doesn’t mean He’s not there. ●

long, you’ve experienced barn buddies getting separated and going into panic mode. Leaving the buddy at the stalls while you head to the show ring can be a
challenge if your steer is constant- ly bawling and looking around for his buddy while he’s in the ring. Having a
buddy seems to always help them re- lax more in the trailer, eat better at the show, and rest better in the stalls, but when they get attached to each other and you separate them, it is something you have to work through to get them over it. How do you react when you lose your sense of security and go into panic mode? Who do you look for? Do you

You are judging the steers at the inaugural show in the new facility at the American Royal. What does being a part of this historic event mean to you? It is truly an honor to be asked to serve as the judge for the 2026 American Royal market steer show at the new facility alongside my son, Carter. The American Royal steer show is one of the most prestigious in
Who has had the biggest influence on you as a person? I have been blessed with several people that have influenced me over the years. First, it would be family. I was blessed with great parents, siblings and a wife for 35 years and our boys that kept us energized. Great friends that are always willing to lend
a hand or share some knowledge. Many teachers and educators from my high school ag teachers to Dan Hoge at Black Hawk East, to some that were just always willing to answer questions and talk. Those types of mentors are too numerous to mention, but they are the best friends and colleagues. You have very strong roots in the agriculture industry. Tell us about your background and how it impacts your current involvement? I have grown up in the livestock industry in Indiana and I had the opportunity to exhibit cattle, sheep and pigs through 4-H and FFA and that helped develop my appreciation for the showing industry and the people and helped guide me through my college years and create opportunities that I would never dream of. I received my associate of science degree from Black Hawk East junior college and my Bachelor
of Science degree from Purdue University. I started my adult career in Kentucky managing an Angus cattle operation and then moved back to Indiana where Mary Ann and I were married in 1991. We have two sons, Cameron and Carter that were both active in junior programs. I was the manager of Three Rivers Angus and then managing partner at Maple Lane Angus, Shipshewana. I accepted a job with the American Hereford Association in 2003, and we have lived in Plattsburg, MO and have worked to build the Ward Brothers Livestock operation as a family. What have been some of your most memorable judging moments? I have been blessed to judge local, state, national and international shows for over 40 years, and I have enjoyed every opportunity. Judging shows have opened doors to parts of the world that I would not have ever discovered without these
opportunities. The first time I was asked to judge at Palermo, Argentina would be a moment I will not forget. The atmosphere at that event is amazing.
What is something that most people do not know about you? When I first started judging shows I was able to judge several pig and lamb shows including the market hog show at the National Western Stock Show and the lamb show at the Louisiana State Fair. My first opportunity to judge at a State fair was the pig show at the Missouri State Fair.

If someone told 18-year-old Jack Ward that he would one day be judging the top cattle shows in the country, what would he say? I am not sure I could have ever imagined when I was 18 that I would have the opportunities given to me as judge. It has been a remarkable adventure, and I enjoyed every moment. If you could meet and have dinner with any person, who would it be? If I could arrange dinner for Mary Ann and I to meet Jason and Travis Kelce and their wives, I think that would be a pretty cool time. What is your favorite aspect of judging? I enjoy a lot of different aspects to judging including evaluation of the animals, giving a set of reasons, meeting show management, and the exhibitors. What is your favorite thing to do away from the livestock industry? I enjoy watching sports of all types including local, college and professional.

Most mornings before going to work on the magazine, we like to make Steel Cut Oatmeal. We normally make it with Apples or Blueberries with Bananas but it is also great when Peaches or Strawberries are in season!

Ingredients Steel Cut Oats 2% Milk Water Choose Fruit below Apple Banana Oatmeal 2 Apples
Instructions Cook on your stove top with a medium or large pot. 1. Bring 2 Cups of 2% Milk and 2 Cups of Water to boil cooking on high. 2. Stir in 1 Cup of Steel Cut Oats, reduce heat from high to low. 3. Dice fruit of choice (Apples, Peaches or Strawberries into small tiny pieces. You can also use 1 Cup of Maine Blueberries instead. Peel 1 Bannana and slice into approximately 10 pieces, then cut each piece of bannana in half. 4. Simmer uncovered over low heat, stirring constantly for approximately 30 minutes or until oats are of desired
texture. When there is approximately 2-5 minutes remaing on your oats, add in diced friut of choice. At this time add 1/4 of the sliced bananas to the bottom of each of the 4 serving cups. 5. Using a heating pad, pour the pot of cooked steel cut oats with cooked fruit into 4 serving cups or small bowls on top of the sliced bananas. 6. (Optional) You can lightly sprinkle Cinnamon on top of each Apple Banana Oatmeal serving cup. We like to slice an additional banana and put 3 to 4 banana slices on top of each oatmeal cup. 7. Add a spoon to each oatmeal cup and serve with a glass of 2% Milk or Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice!

ees Toler, of Bidwell, Ohio, recently exhibited the Grand Champion Steer at the Ohio State Fair. Rees is the son of Mat and Amy Toler and the older brother of Myles. He is a senior at Gallia Academy High School where he participates in the College Credit Plus program through the University of Rio Grande. Rees is a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity baseball team at Gallia Academy. He is a member of FFA and has recently earned his State FFA Degree. Rees is also a member of the Pairs and Spares 4-H Club and the Gallia County Junior Fair Youthboard. Toler’s long-term career goals are to become a veterinarian. The steer’s genetics included being out of Trust and Obey x Little Red. Of his steer, Rees says,” I can’t really think of any particular moments, with my steer, that stand out; it was just a good time all the way around!” He went on to say, “The whole experience, at the state fair, was just like a fairytale. The steer just did everything right, his whole life, and that’s really all you can ever ask for,” Rees is extremely grateful for his support system. He says, “I could never thank everyone that helped me along the way because there is such a long list of people. I would, however, like to thank my mom

and dad because they’re the main people who have really pushed me throughout the whole time that I have shown steers.” He went on to say, “I couldn’t have done it without them!” He went on to give high praise to his fitting and clipping crew. “Those guys are amazing! Because I had people like Brandon DeFrank, and the other team members, I never had to worry because the calf always looked his best in the ring. I would have never got that done without them!”
‘It means everything to me to be lucky enough to win at the Ohio State Fair! We, and I say we, because it is a team effort, have been chasing this win for a long time and it’s just unbelievable that we were able to accomplish it,” Toler commented. Rees went on to say, “I have always believed that what you put into something is what you get out of it and this success just makes the drive stronger to keep moving forward in this industry.” ●

hen you are born into a show cattle family, people assume you belong in the ring. But for me, I was content working behind the scenes. My name is McCoy Klingaman, I am 10
myself, I didn’t want any part of it. All I wanted to do at shows was help fit. Wow, has that changed in the past four years. I finally took a chance and went into the ring at a tiny jackpot show in Indiana. What I was afraid would happen actually did: I got knocked down two steps into the ring, and the heifer ended up on top of me. Luckily, I only had some scrapes and bruises, but I didn’t want to go back into the ring. My mom and I started praying this verse: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9). I thought this was just

years old, and I am from Lima, Ohio. At Winegardner/Klingaman Show Cattle, we mainly raise Chi, Chiangus, and Maine-influenced cattle. I have loved working beside my dad on our operation ever since I could walk, learning everything there was to know about show cattle. But when it came to actually going in the ring

another verse I memorized for kids' church, but it quickly became my life verse and has encouraged me through many hard times in my young life. A few months later—and with a lot of prayer—my dad found me the most gentle little show heifer that has ever stepped onto our property, and that was all it took. My whole family fell in love with "Marshmallow Watermelon Klingaman," as my sister named her. She gave me the confidence to get back in the ring, and I was hooked. Fast forward to the reason I have the honor of writing this article: TSSC Cowan’s Raya M232 ET, or "Favorite Show Cow Ever," as I like to call her. I was so excited when my dad found this little baldy at Boyert-Core’s Fall Sale. I couldn’t wait to start working with her, though she definitely had other plans at first. It took a lot of hard work, but we finally got her broke, and I fell in love with her. We took her to my second Chi and Maine Junior National, and we had a week I will never forget. I was named Champion Rookie Showman, and Raya was selected as Reserve Champion Chi- Composite Female. At just 8 years old, I never thought
I would top that feeling. However, we knew she was special, and my dad and I were determined to keep working with her. I got to show her a few more times, and I just fell more and more in love with her. Our bond is truly something special. When we bought her, we knew we wanted her to end her show career at my very first Ohio State Fair. It was not easy, and even my dad wanted to give up at one point, but my mom and I talked sense into him, and we kept working. Heading to the state fair, I had mixed emotions. I was excited to show my favorite cow, but also sad knowing her show career would be over. When she was selected as Champion Percentage Simmental, I was thrilled— especially because I knew I got to show her one more time in the Supreme drive. My parents explained to me how prestigious this was and how fortunate I was to even get out there as a first-year 4-H member. As I walked to the ring for the last time with Raya, I could feel the pressure. My mom prayed over me, and off we went. I was prepared to have to show her for a long time, but the experience was a complete blur. When

Mr. Udell and Mr. Meyer came toward me, slapped her back, and shook my hand, I couldn’t help but let all my emotions out. Everything we had worked for—from being literally knocked down my first time in the ring to being selected Supreme Champion Heifer at my first Ohio State Fair, and everything in between—it all hit me at once. I know I am only 10 and have a lot of life to live and lessons to learn, but that is one feeling I will absolutely never forget. God has blessed me and my family so much, and we are beyond grateful. I thank Jesus every day for helping me be strong and courageous and for getting me back into that ring. Raya may be finished and turned out to pasture, but I am just getting started. ●

Hi, I am Hadley Hendrickson, a 19-year-old first-year college student, at Purdue University. This year, I was a 10 year 4-H member. On the night of August 9th, I walked onto the dirt for the very last time with my crossbred steer, Arnold, and had the incredible opportunity to be selected as the 2026 Grand Champion Steer at the Indiana State Fair. Having the opportunity to compete in the Grand Drive at the Indiana State Fair during my tenth year of 4-H was an accomplishment that my family and I were already beyond proud of, but receiving the Grand Champion slap under the lights and hearing the roar of the Coliseum was a feeling unlike any other. The time and effort it took to get that steer into the showring was an accomplishment in itself because he was not the nicest baby calf at home, let alone when I tried to take him to a show. Having the opportunity
to grow together and build a bond while working through that obstacle was such a long but memorable experience. I remember telling my parents that I did not think I would ever get to show him, but through the countless hours in the barn and cooler, Arnold and I developed a bond and trust that was unmatched. Seeing him show the way he did in the Coliseum was such a proud moment for me because I got to see just how far he had come. The night of the Grand Drive was a mixture of laughs, tears, and hugs, but most importantly, it was a time to remember all the memories I have shared with my show family over the past ten years. Although the realization that I would be showing in the Coliseum for the last time was difficult, I can only sit back and reflect on the incredible show career
I have experienced with the best people in the best industry. Having the opportunity to be involved in this industry from such an early age has been one of my greatest gifts, and the memories I have made with my family and show family are ones I will cherish for the rest of my life. As I look back at my last 17 years of being in the ring, I have learned so many lessons. Now, I could tell you about the lessons I have learned along the way, like work ethic, leadership skills, and humility, but I want to share something that many people do not think about enough. One of the most important lessons I have learned within the livestock industry is that it not only prepares you for the future, but it provides you with the opportunity to leave a mark on the people that you leave behind.

come. Instead, I was grateful for every hardship and joy I had experienced throughout my show career. I was thankful that, now, as I move onto my next step in life, I understand that the impact I make on the people around me is so important. Therefore, I urge you to “swim against the current” and be different. Be the outlier who stays, who reflects on the past, and gives back to their community for the betterment of the future kids who will one day be in your exact position. Be a person for those young kids to follow and aspire to be like, both in and out of

The people who have made an impact on my journey have sculpted me and guided me on a path of success, passion, integrity, and, most importantly, faith. I will never be able to give those people enough gratitude and hugs to amount to the love I have for each and everyone of them. I believe it is of the utmost importance to have a community of people who make you a better human being and follower of Jesus Christ, and, in that same way, you guide each other. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens
livestock showman, I promise you that I would go back any day to spend one more late night in the barn having a “nice” family disagreement or gut pens for the second time in one day late at night at a show because my dad thinks they NEED to be done again. While you have the chance, I urge you to laugh harder…stay longer…hug tighter…and cherish every moment you can with your people, because those are the moments that will last forever. ●
