The problem might already be solved, and we are worrying for no reason. This is a little reminder I use to help keep me on track: S – Stop before reacting. Take a slow, deep breath. Everything doesn’t need an immediate response. T – Talk to God. Be honest and tell Him how you’re feeling. It’s ok to not be ok. I – Identify the truth. Consider things that are real instead of things that could possibly happen. L – Leave the outcome in God’s hands. Leave the weight of your worry with Him. L – Lean on His promises. Choose a Bible verse that brings you comfort and peace. Now when I go to the barn, I use Timmy as a reminder to slow down and spend some quiet time with God. And the God of peace will be with you.” The most important thing to remem- ber when we feel overwhelmed is that we are not in control and we are not in

I feel like I’m being pulled in a million different directions and trying to finish up different proj- ects, but my list keeps getting longer instead of shorter. 1990 with a degree in Animal Science with a minor in Business. While at OSU, Tim was a member of the Meats Judging Team, National Champion Livestock Judging Team, and the World Champion Quarter Horse Judging Team. Out of college, he moved to Northern Virginia to work in his first full time job as the Herdsman at Whitestone Farm in Aldie. For eight years, Tim managed their show and sale cattle; they ran about 350 cows. Whitestone had a huge production sale every Fall and a bull sale every Spring. Following his tenure in Aldie on the outskirts of Washington DC, Fitzgerald designed, built, and managed Fox Cross Farm in West Virginia for four years before finding his home at Cherry Knoll Farms in West Grove, Pennsylvania for 17 years. After graduating from high school in 1986 in a class of just 10 students, Tim attended Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1990 with a degree in animal science and a minor in business. While at OSU, Tim was a member of the Meats Judging Team, the National Champion Livestock Judging Team, and the World Champion Quarter Horse Judging Team.

After college, he moved to Northern Virginia for his first full-time job as the herdsman at Whitestone Farm in Aldie on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. For eight years, Tim managed the show and sale cattle including their major fall production and spring bull sales. Following his tenure in Aldie, he spent four years designing, building, and managing the Fox Cross Farm in West Virginia before taking the helm at Cherry Knoll Farms in West Grove, Pennsylvania, where he remained for 17 years. From 2004 to 2020, Tim served as the general manager for Cherry Knoll Farm, owned by Bob and Margaret Duprey. Tim reflects fondly on his time there: “We ran about 100 Angus cows, did extensive embryo work, and had 30 to 40 embryo calves a year. We showed a lot—there was a period where we had the American Angus Association’s Show Heifer of the Year six out of ten years.” While the cattle were exceptional, it was the woman behind the farm who made the biggest impact on Tim. “Margaret was probably the most giving person for the junior Angus shows in the country,” Tim said. “For years, she sponsored the gift at the National Junior Angus Heifer Show; she made a point to have the junior members ask her personally to sponsor the show.

accomplishments along the way have allowed him to make a lasting impact on the cattle industry. Tim Fitzgerald grew up in Harrison, a small western Nebraska town near the Wyoming and South Dakota borders with a population of just 340. Raised on a 17,000-acre ranch, Tim developed a passion for the cattle industry from a young age. “Our ranch consisted of about 500 Angus cows and we grew up doing everything on horseback.” Located just three and a half hours north of Denver, his family made annual trips to the National Western Stock Show with carload bulls, pen bulls and hill cattle. In fact, a member of the Fitzgerald family has exhibited or judged at the National Western Stock Show every year since 1961. After graduating from high school in 1986 [in a graduating class of just 10], Tim went to Oklahoma State University where he graduated in

She was a truly special person.” Cherry Knoll Farm was a dominant force. Tim recalls his show days with them: “We got on a winning streak. Winning Denver is the hardest thing there is, but once we won, it was like a landslide. There were years where we had both the Champion Heifer and the Champion Bull.” The backstory of Cherry Knoll’s genetics is a testament to the power of the connections made throughout a lifetime in the industry. The foundation of the Cherry Knoll base cowherd tied directly back to a connection Tim made growing up. Living just two hours west of Connealy Angus as a kid, that relationship proved instrumental to the future of Cherry Knoll Farm. “It’s kind of a special deal because a lot of people buy show heifers or embryos to build their herd,” Tim explains. “We were lucky. We went to Connealy Angus out in Whitman, Nebraska. The Connealys are known for selling bulls, but we picked 10 head out of their replacement females three years in a row to build our base cowherd at Cherry Knoll Farm.” A strong connection was the foundation for Tim’s next and current

074

venture. When Margaret Duprey started to downsize the cattle side of her farm to focus on horses, an opportunity presented itself for Tim to join forces with Mitch Ferree in Sullivan, Indiana. Mitch had purchased a heifer from Cherry Knoll earlier and was able to watch Tim at the shows. Tim said, “he liked the way I was with families that we sold cattle to and the way we showed with my two boys, Brody and Bryce. He said, ‘I am looking for a cow herd to buy; but I’m also looking for a manager of the cattle and someone to be involved with the kids, Houston and Mercedes Ferree going through the show ring.” Having had the desire to move back further West, Tim loaded up everything from Cherry Knoll in April of 2020 and Ferree Fitzgerald was born. Strong connections were also the foundation for Tim’s next and current venture. When Margaret

Duprey began downsizing the cattle operation at Cherry Knoll to focus on horses, an opportunity arose for Tim to join forces with Mitch Ferree in Sullivan, Indiana. Mitch had previously purchased a heifer from Cherry Knoll and had closely followed Tim at the shows. Tim recalls, “He liked how I interacted with the families we sold cattle to and how I worked with my two boys, Brody and Bryce.” He told me, ‘I’m looking to buy a cow herd, but I’m also looking for a manager who will be actively involved with my kids, Houston and Mercedes, as they go through the show ring.’” Wanting to move back further west, Tim loaded up everything from Cherry Knoll in April 2020, and Ferree Fitzgerald was born. When asked about their current focus, Tim says, “We want to raise a superior product. We are trying to raise a very high-quality animal that is going to make a great cow for these kids.”

Their main herd is primarily Angus, alongside a select few Simmental, Shorthorn, Limousin, and Maintainer females. Once the Ferree kids complete their time in the show ring, the Ferree Fitzgerald brand has its sights set on hosting production sales in addition to private treaty sales at the farm. Throughout his career, Tim has achieved extraordinary success in the Angus show circuit. From winning Champion Showman at the National Junior Angus Heifer Show in 1985 and being named Herdsman of the Year in 2000, to having the American Angus Association’s Show Heifer of the Year title multiple times—once with Whitestone, three times with Fox Cross, five with Cherry Knoll Farms, and twice with Ferree Fitzgerald— his accolades place him among the industry's greats. Among his favorite wins was exhibiting the Supreme Champion Heifer at the Cattlemen’s Congress in 2023. “That was an exciting win for all of us,” Tim recalls. “In fact, that year we had both the Champion Angus Heifer and Champion Angus Bull. The heifer was Supreme that night, and the bull calf ended up third overall.” Another standout achievement came in a year when a set of maternal sisters won their divisions in Denver as calves, then went on to win Champion Heifer in Louisville that fall for Lexi Wright, and Champion Angus Female at the following National Western in Denver for Kathryn Coleman - both were out of a Connealy cow. Tim Fitzgerald’s life highlights the importance of building lasting relationships—whether formed on a judging team or with customers. He credits influential figures like Robby and Kitty Robertson (owners of Whitestone Farm), Mark Duffell, Paul Hill, and Margaret Duprey with teaching him the value of being a

people person. For the past decade, Tim has shared his life with Joni Moffit, who helped him transition from Cherry Knoll Farm to Indiana and remains right by his side, pushing him to be his best. While his path to Sullivan, Indiana began in Nebraska and took him through four states along the way, the relationships he has built, the skills he has refined, and the success he has achieved are truly top tier. ●

Preheat the oven to 350°F and set out a 24-cup muffin pan (or two 12-cup pans). 1 Season the meat with salt and pepper (or taco seasoning if you would like). Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat until fully cooked. Break the beef into small crumbles. Drain any excess grease. 2 Cook the refried beans in a pan on the stove until heated. 3 Arrange 5-6 large Doritos chips around the sides of each muffin cup, overlapping them slightly to create a bowl shape. 4 Fill each cup with ingredients to your liking. RESERVE CHAMPION STEER Shay Rodgers

103

Hello, my name is Danica Prins, from Iona, Minnesota. I am currently a Junior at South Dakota State University pursuing my bachelor’s in Animal Science with minors in Agricultural Business and Agricultural Marketing. This October I had the privilege of winning the 127th American Royal Market Steer show with my steer “Creed.” Growing up on my family’s commercial hog farm in southwest Minnesota, I spent the first six years of my show career showing pigs.

Showing pigs was a big part of our lives and something my brothers, Cameron and Carter, and I shared together. I had always wanted to show cattle as well, and in 2022, I had the opportunity to connect with Blaine Rodgers and his family, who helped me get started showing steers. Setting goals and working towards them has always been important to our entire team. Every year, when we go look at calves, we have a goal in mind for the upcoming show season. This year was a

little different because, with my show career nearing its end, we wanted to set our sights high. We decided to go after what we considered the biggest goal of them all try to win the American Royal Market Steer Show. Getting our steers ready has always been a team effort in our family, and this year was no different. With me being away at college, I wasn’t able to be home as much as I was during the summer, so my mom and dad took on the day-to-day work to get the steers ready for Kansas City. Their time, hard work, and dedication played a huge role in making this win possible. I couldn’t have done it without them, and I’m incredibly thankful for everything they do to support me and my goals in and out of the show ring. This accomplishment is just as much theirs as it is mine.

Winning a major steer show has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember and I knew it was something I wanted to work toward myself. The livestock industry is so competitive and so many things have to go right, including some things that can be out of your control. But when it all comes together like this it makes the years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifices worth it. This show meant even more because we got to experience it alongside some of our best friends.

104

The Rodgers family and their crew hold a very special place in my heart. They always go above and beyond to make us feel at home and are there whenever we need them. I am incredibly thankful for everything they have done for my family, and none of this would have been possible without their support. Being able to share this experience with Payton and Reagan is something I will forever cherish. This industry has given us a friendship that has grown into family, and I will always be grateful for that. Getting to stand in the Grand Drive alongside Reagan made the experience even more meaningful, and it is a memory I will carry with me for years to come! ●
