Sheryl Clanton’s family and friends donated $5,000 to the Stanley E. Stout Memorial Heifer Scholarship, which will fund an additional $250 scholarship for the Champion Maine-Anjou Female and Champion Shorthorn Female exhibitors during the American Royal junior breeding cattle show each year. Sheryl, who passed unexpectedly in January 2024, was a longtime supporter of the American Royal and its junior exhibitors. She and her husband, Brett, served multiple terms as chairmen of the Junior Premium Livestock Auction (JPLA), helping set the event’s standard of success. Sheryl was the driving force behind the inaugural Hide Party, which raised funds for the JPLA; served as co-chair when the Grand Champion Steer brought more than $100,000 for the first time; played a vital role in organizing the exhibitor social; and was a consistent supporter of junior exhibitors, whether helping purchase their projects or connecting them with buyers and supporters on sale

night. She remained an active member of American Royal’s Livestock Committee until her passing, and you can find her and Brett in several of the champion photos currently displayed in the American Royal offices. The Clanton family felt this contribution was a fitting tribute to Sheryl’s legacy, not only because of her commitment to youth livestock exhibition, but also because of her connection to Stanley. “Sheryl and Stanley were dear friends, and Stanley was instrumental in my mom’s involvement with the American Royal Livestock and Auction Committees,” said Bailey Clanton, her daughter. The Clanton family chose the Maine- Anjou and Shorthorn breeds because they spent many years exhibiting those cattle in the junior show at the American Royal. They hope this contribution will encourage other young people to do the same, while improving their access to further education and new opportunities. ●
