THE HUMAN FACTOR

People crave what is real. The world has become so increasingly fast paced and digital that the human factor is being lost. Everything is online and people work diligently to be cutting edge. Is there a convenience to modernizing how we eat, communicate, work, buy things, travel, and find our entertainment? Absolutely. Take it from us, we know. The Showtimes has over 223,000 on social media with over 30,000 downloads of our app. Technology has been a wonderful tool for us to utilize as a company. With that being said, it is imperative that you keep a balance between online and what is real. The Showtimes is adamant about keeping the human factor in our business. When you call us, you talk personally to myself or one of my family members. When you have us do a design or order a sign or banner, it is designed and made custom to your

needs by us directly. Not only does this help ensure the quality of the products we are putting out, but it also allows us to form connections and get to know people across the country. Some of my favorite people and best friends are ones that I have gotten to know through working with them on their marketing. The next time you are at a show and see The Showtimes or are driving through Brighton, Colorado, I invite you to stop by and say hello. Call us when you have an idea or want to add The Showtimes Effect to your marketing. There is something special that happens when you live outside of the box. It is great to be progressive and set high goals, but don’t forget the human factor.

sale bulls every year. In college, the livestock judging program opened the door to so many wonderful people in the cattle industry. While at Kansas State University, I worked for Mid-Continent Farms before their steer and heifer sales. The Stewart family was my home away from home while I was in college. Not only did they keep my freezer full of hamburger, which was huge for a broke college kid, but they also had a major impact on my involvement with show cattle. After graduating from Kansas State, I stayed involved in different ways, working for various people at the majors and building lifelong friendships with people in the business. One thing I love most about the livestock business is

the people in it. There is a comradery and bond shared that is second to none. The common ground of hard work, dedication, true grit, and having to pick yourself up, dust off, and try harder the next time creates a connection like no other. Once I moved to Texas, I stayed very involved in selling steers and helping kids learn daily care, feeding, and showmanship skills. Working with the youth has been extremely rewarding for me. My primary role today is being a show mom to Libbi. Seeing the passion she has for her steers, and her willingness to go the extra mile without being told, makes my heart so full. I am so grateful for everything this industry has given me over the years and give God all the glory. ■

HOWDY , a word I’ve grown accustomed to and have begun to use in my daily vocabulary since beginning at Texas A&M University. As a native of Faribault, Minnesota, and a Texas transplant, I have grown to appreciate every moment of my current life.

My name is Tar Tut, and despite my unconventional start in this industry, I have learned that no matter what

happens, someone, somewhere will always be there in your corner to support you in whatever you do. My story starts with my parents back in 1990, when they fled war torn Sudan. At that time, the Sudanese people were involved in one of the longest and bloodiest civil wars in history. They came to the United

States as refugees and first settled in Texas. My parents

then moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where my brother and I were born. Shortly after, my family and I moved to Faribault, Minnesota, to be closer to family. I grew up in a large family of six brothers and two sisters. In 2004, my youngest sister was born with Down’s syndrome. Her condition required many visits to the hospital. It was there where my family and I met Debi Purfeerst, who became my sister’s home nurse. Debi would visit my family’s home to check in on my sister and through the years, Debi developed a relationship with my family, but I grew an even more special connection with her. The summer before sixth grade year, Debi asked if I would like to visit her farm. Debi and her family raised and successfully showed registered Angus cattle, and her youngest son, Matt, was still showing. With zero hesitation, I was hooked and wanted to be involved with any and everything farm or show cattle related from that first trip to Purfeerst Farms. Debi worked a couple of miles from my home, and would come every other day to pick me up to work on show cattle and to learn the ropes of the trade. Her youngest, Matt, played an integral role in my love and passion for this game because of his drive and willingness to teach me all that he knows. In the fall of 2013, I attended my first cattle

show at the Minnesota Beef Expo and participated in showmanship. Not making the cut, I could not ever be more grateful, because that was when I truly fell in love with showmanship, because I wanted to be that kid that was at the backdrop with the rest of the top five for showmanship. I worked hard and made it a goal of mine to do just that. Along with that, the oldest son, Mark and his wife Jamie, were coaching the local county judging team and asked me to join the team. Little did I know where it would take me and how much of an impact it would have on my life. Both Mark and Jamie, played an instrumental part in my development early on, by not only growing my confidence and ability to evaluate livestock but allowing me to grow as an individual in all other aspects of my life. Prior to joining a livestock judging team, I was the shy kid who did not step out of my comfort zone and always wanted to stay at home. However, they broke me out of my shell and allowed me to discover who I truly was at a young age. The following year, the Purfeerst leased me a spring Angus heifer to show at the county fair. There, I was fortunate enough to see success on the county level and earn a trip to the Minnesota State Fair to compete with the “big dogs.” Being on the local county team, I also had the

When I met Tar Tut at one of his first Junior National Hereford Expos I knew he was destined to be a leader and a shining star in this industry. He always has had such a presence in the showring and his passion for people and this industry is unmatched. It didn’t take long until he was serving as a state voting delegate, attending Faces of Leadership and then putting his name in the hat to run for a position on the National Junior Hereford Association Board of Directors. This summer will mark his second year on the board and he now holds the office of leadership chairman, a position that fits him very well. Tar is a true peoples champion and the junior NJHA members love to be around him and learn from him. He takes his job on the board very seriously and has brought so many valuable ideas and concepts to better our organization. Tar definitely makes the NJHA proud and has represented us well at Texas A&M and now as he moves into a job with Merck Animal Health. At our recent BOLD leadership conference, Tar led a workshop on coaching and who you are as a leader. As he was telling the story of the coaches that have made a difference along his journey, I couldn’t help but think of what a great coach he has been to the younger Hereford junior members through his service on the NJHA Board. Tar’s journey has only just began and I can’t wait

to see where he takes his leadership from here. Amy Cowan, American Hereford Association Director of Youth Activities and Foundation

chance to judge at the state judging contest along with exhibiting my heifer. That same summer, I was standing in line waiting for my nightly meal, when a BOLD, CONFIDENT and beefy, 13-year- old Hans Lind, approached me and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was waiting for a meal when he invited me to the family’s camper to eat a meal there. In short, the rest is history and I have been considered family to the Linds for the last 10 years. From that moment on, for the last 6 to seven years I have spent a majority of every major holiday with the Lind family because they took me in as one of their own. A couple of years later, the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) was held only three hours down the road from where I lived in

Madison, Wisconsin. It was there I met numerous people from all over the country and saw what the junior board did and was immediately hooked on everything junior nationals related. The National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) and all its members welcomed me with open arms and, like the Lind family, were very accepting of me. It was the impact that both the Hereford Breed and the Red Angus Breed had on my adolescent life that made me want to run for the junior board so I could have the same influential impact on young junior members’ lives as the board members had on mine. I have been fortunate enough to serve on two different breed associations, junior board of directors.

My first position as a director on the NAJRAE junior board and currently serving as the Leadership Chair on the NJHA junior board directors. For lack of a better way to say it, during my developmental stages and figuring out who I was and what I am passionate about, I found my other love in livestock judging. As high school graduation approached, I realized that I could continue to pursue my passion for livestock judging in college. Two of my close friends, Cal Schultz and Martha Moenning and I, toured junior colleges together, and by the grace of God, we all landed at Butler Junior College in El Dorado, Kansas. There I gained a newfound confidence and love for the game instilled in me by Coach Taylor

Frank. A young, green team of 14 young adults became my family for the following two years where we were blessed to see success and were named Co-Team of the Year. It was important to me to further my education and livestock judging career and after much consideration, I made the decision to make Texas A&M University home for the last two years. In my opinion, the BEST Land Grant university that is dynamic in every perspective. While competing on one of the most decorated teams to have gone through the judging program and receiving a next-level education, the team was fortunate enough to finish its season named the Reserve National

43

Champions along with having Seven of the 10 All- Americans named to the All-American Team. My future plans are still in the works; however, I have aspirations to receive my Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in Agriculture Leadership or Organizational and Strategic Leadership with goals of continuing to work

within the agriculture industry. Words become powerless when searching for the right words in expressing my gratitude for each and every person that has played an influential and integral role in my development from a young age to where I am today.

From the bottom of my heart I cannot say THANK you enough, specifically, Doug, Becky, and their children; Chellsey Olson and husband Nate, daughters, Cora and Sylvi; Colby and wife Tracy, children, Tate, Channing and Laramie; Lakyn Lind and Ryan Mesch, daughter Saige; Dani Kingsley and Shane Coulter, daughter

Mya; Kjersta and David Donnelley, daughter Kaylin; and Hans and Jens. Also, to the Purfeerst family, Jim, Deb and their children; Mark and wife Jamie, children Leo, Ivy and Kade; Misty, daughters Stella and Mackenzie; Matt and wife Alyssa and son Jones. ■

Whether you are interested in agricultural media and communications, agricultural education, agricultural business, animal science or plant science, West Texas A&M University’s Department of Agricultural Sciences has degree programs that will assist students in their future employment goals. The campus is in Canyon, Texas where there is no better place to study agriculture than in the heart of the industry itself, the Texas Panhandle. “The nature of the Panhandle is people oriented,” said Dr. Lance Kieth, associate dean and department head for agricultural

sciences “We take care of one another. However, if you do not foster that culture and hold it up as a standard, then it does not happen. We work to make that happen here.”

Students of WTAG are not only investing in a quality

education, but in connections and opportunities that last a lifetime. Small class sizes allow students to get to know their professors and to gain access to more endeavors outside the classroom like research and service opportunities. An affordable education is important to prospective students

and WTAMU can offer a low- cost tuition for an exceptional education. “We give you twice the education for half of the cost” Kieth said. “We are financially feasible, and our quality of education is very high level. There is data there that shows it.” In the 2022 academic year, the Department of Agricultural Sciences offered $531,598 in scholarships to 120 students. Kieth expressed the importance of getting involved on campus and stepping out of your comfort zone. The department offers student organizations such as Collegiate Farm Bureau, Agronomy Club, Block & Bridle, Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow, Collegiate FFA, and Agribusiness club. Outside of organizations, other opportunities are available to get involved such as study abroad

programs. Last year, 22 students and five faculty members traveled a total of 18,163 miles across the globe. The department is well recognized for their competitive teams and the success that precedes them. Livestock judging, meats judging, horse judging, equestrian, ranch horse team and rodeo provide students with valuable knowledge and experiences that aid in improving life skills as well as career readiness. “Meat judging has allowed me to gain knowledge of the U. S. meat industry, create connections across the nation and made me become more active in my university resulting in numerous lifelong friends,” said Caleb Olfers, a junior animal science major and member of the meats judging team.

Canyon, Texas is surrounded by some of the most fertile land in the U. S. “In terms of uniqueness, I think it is the immersion in the agriculture industry and our students being able to spend time in that,” Kieth said while explaining the advantages of WTAMU. The university utilizes the location it is in by inviting industry leaders to connect with students for a more real-world agriculture experience. The Texas Panhandle leads the nation in dairy, beef, corn, and sorghum production, granting students several avenues of agriculture to learn from in a close vicinity to campus. At a show a few weeks ago, I was visiting with one of my friends that I don’t get to see very often. She asked her young son who was by her side, “do you know Miss Jen?” He shook his head no, and she responded by saying “well, she knows you.” What she meant was that I know him from seeing his mom’s social media. I follow her, so I know about him, but I really don’t know him, and he doesn’t know me. This happens a lot with social media. You can feel like you know someone even though you have no relationship with them. My question is, how do you know Jesus? Do you know Him, or just know about Him? Do you take time to build a relationship with Him? Do you take time to follow Him? In Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus teaches us “21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I

will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” The world wants to make us believe that good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. This is just simply not the case. If there is no God and no Jesus, there is no heaven. The Bible teaches us that the only way to heaven is to believe in Jesus and follow Him. The scripture above states that only those that do the will of the Father will enter the kingdom of heaven. We can’t just know about Jesus. We can’t just believe in God. The three things we must do to spend eternity in heaven are to believe in Him, confess our sins, and live our lives according to His will. We live in a world that is getting farther and farther away from God and more engulfed in sin. It has never been more important to focus on having a real relationship with God so that sin doesn’t creep into our lives. When our time comes to leave this world, it’s better to be certain that we’ve lived a life according to Jesus teachings and are welcomed with open arms into heaven. ■
