what we wanted to accomplish with it was only a dream. 15 years later, as we reached our goals our dreams continued to grow. What’s funny is the most fulfilling aspect of our job is not what would show up on paper. It is the connections we have made along the way. Just yesterday, we received a phone call from a farmer in Illinois who enjoys the magazine, wanted to see how we were doing and chat about life. There is another individual from Iowa who checks on us throughout the year and has dedicated his entire life to the livestock industry through extension. The Showtimes is so much more than a magazine, a marketing and graphic design firm, or a brand. It is highlighting and forming a bond between people with like interests and pushing the limits on what you think is possible. Thank you for 15 great years! We are excited for the New Year and can’t wait to see you at the shows. •

Fifteen years ago, in an isle at the National Western, Lisa brought the idea back up to start a livestock magazine. On February 1, 2007, The Showtimes was born. 82 issue later, we have fine-tuned The Showtimes into the issue you are reading right now! We’re ready for 2022! The Jan/ Feb Stock Show Edition not only celebrates our 15th Anniversary, but it also kicks off a New Year. More recently, Savannah has volunteered on the Public Relations Committee assisting with coordinating out of state Rodeo Queens and with the Parades Committee as an out- rider for the horse drawn vehicles and wagons. Savannah’s roots are deep in western heritage. Her Maternal side of the family has owned and operated the CP Ranch since 1904. Her paternal great, great Grandfather was the blacksmith for the Cheyenne area dating back to 1916. Her family has a passion for horse drawn vehicles and turn of the century memorabilia which they have housed at the family’s “Messenger’s Old West Museum”. Her family has been driving horses in the Cheyenne Frontier Days parades and Grand Entries since the 70s and has promoted Cheyenne Frontier Days with

Savannah Sherri Messenger is the 23-year-old daughter of Kirk and Raedene Messenger and the late Mark Messenger. She is a seventh generation Wyomingite and a Cheyenne Central High School 2016 graduate, Savannah attended college in Laramie Wyoming and studied communications. She then attended IBMC in Fort Collins Colorado and is now a licensed Esthetician. During high school, she was a four-year letter recipient on the Cheyenne Central women’s soccer team, and a state qualifier for the indoor track team. From the time she was 9, she participated in draft horse driving and showing competitions throughout the United States and Canada, winning top awards. Savannah was a Cheyenne Frontier Days Dandy during the years of 2014, 2015 and 2016, during these years her love for CFD and riding

Jordan currently represents the University of Wyoming as the Vice-President of the WyoGold Student Alumni Association and as an Ag Ambassador for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. As a freshman Jordan was a member of the University of Wyoming Equestrian Team, and as a sophomore competed as a member of the University of Wyoming Ranch Horse Team. Jordan has been involved with CFD for as long as she can remember. She attended her first coronation ball at the age of five weeks old, and her first rodeo a week later. Jordan’s family ties run deep through CFD. Her mother, Rachelle, was crowned Lady-in- Waiting in 1992, and served as Miss Frontier in 1993. Jordan’s Great Cousin, Laura Bailey, was

Miss Frontier in 1951, and her Great Aunt, Teddy Ann Storey, held the title in 1942. Jordan served on the Color Guard for the 125th CFD and was also part of the AA “Barn Crew” the summer leading up to the 2021 show. “Tradition is important. Cheyenne Frontier Days is the embodiment of tradition and people coming together as a family to put on a world-renowned rodeo and show. It is humbling to know that I am being trusted with representing the 3000+ volunteers that make it possible. I truly hope to make each one of them proud. I’m so thankful to represent the sport of rodeo, the traditions of the West and The Daddy of ‘Em All!”

JordanMackenzie Johnson is the 20-year-old daughter of Steve and Rachelle Zimmerman and Darrel Johnson. She has a younger brother, Andrew Johnson. Jordan is a 2019 graduate of Cheyenne Central High School where she was a member of the Swim, Drama and Speech & Debate teams. Jordan was also named an Academic All American by the National Speech and Debate Association. She was a 4-year CFD Dandy from 2015-2019. Jordan participated as a 4-H member for 9 years, winning numerous placings including Grand Champion Horse Showman and Grand Champion Western Reiner. Jordan is currently a Junior at the University of Wyoming. She is pursuing a degree in Animal Science, with a concentration in

have preferred the simple, non-flashy, tried and true, title of “mom” over the

fancy, glamorous word, “show mom”. It was always my belief that it was a title that fell on me because my children showed livestock. A show mom made sure the health papers were picked up from the vet, show clothes ironed, shoes and belt not forgotten, cooler loaded and of course, the crockpot. Small tasks that, to me, seemed very mundane. However, I’ve recently realized being a show mom is something much more. That it is not solely a responsibility to help my kids prepare to show livestock in the show ring, it is also a role bestowed

upon me, to elevate me, to be a better mom. A show mom will be challenged to see how much can be conquered in a day, and then is required to devise a plan to execute. It will push you to go farther than you thought possible when being pulled in so many different directions. Teaching you that even when exhaustion has set in and it has felt nearly impossible to give anymore, to dig deep. To find the beauty in the chaos and to continuously cherish the moments. Being a show mom has strengthened me beyond measures, and in doing so has also resulted in

these amazing by-products, my children, who have witnessed what ultimate love, dedication and sacrifice is. The best part of being a show mom is that our children have had front row seats to see that the key to success is doing more than what a job description entails. They have been immersed in what work without ceasing means and have seen that hard work, passion and perseverance is what gets the job done. That things will often not go the way you expect, but that the right perspective can turn those obstacles into opportunities. They know what putting others before yourself feels like and above all else what it looks like to put your whole soul into something you believe in. Show moms are behind the scenes workers full of grace, grit, and determination, who seek little recognition. They work silently and diligently and take great pleasure in knowing that their greatest contribution to the world is living in front of their children the way they wish them to live. •

Hailey was crowned as Miss Rodeo America 2022 on Sunday, December 5 at the South Point Hotel and Casino. The 24 year-old from Wellington represented her home state at the Miss Rodeo America Pageant as the 2020-2021 Miss Rodeo Colorado, becoming the 6th from her state to hold the ranching, Hailey is a first- generation college graduate from Colorado State University, having earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences with a minor in Agricultural Business. Hailey enjoys riding horses, barrel racing, breakaway roping, and dancing. Following her reign as Miss Rodeo America 2022, she plans to obtain a masters in Agricultural Communications and use her ambition and passion coveted national title. With family roots in

1.What is your background? I was born and raised in Fontanelle, IA on my families farm. Growing up we raised cattle and had some row crop. I started showing cattle at the age of 3 and quickly noticed I had a passion for livestock. When I started showing, my dad was still raising some club calves and that’s what I showed. Throughout the years he went to more of a commercial herd. This lead to me showing cattle from some of the most reputable guys in the industry. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by great role models and learned an immense amount of knowledge from them over the years. I now take a lot of that I learned and use in my own business, Herr Show Cattle, today. Here at Herr Show Cattle we offer a full time service to our customers. From clipping and fitting, to daily care and feed recommendations we offer it all. I think what makes us unique is that we may not sell the most numbers every year but we really try to focus on selling some of the 2.What do you offer at Herr ShowCattle andwhat makes you unique? highest quality cattle we can find. My motto every year is quality over quantity, and I try to implement it to the best of my ability. My favorite animal that I’ve ever been a part of was one I technically never sold, but one I found for my sister to show. We called him “G” and he was the last steer we ever had in our barn. He’s one of the only ones I’ve ever known to make it to all 3 majors (KC, NAILE, NWSS) and be shown competitively. He just loved to be a show steer and had a one of a kind personality. 4.What is your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment would be winning the Louisville steer show this year with the Jacobson family. It’s my first national show win with one I’ve sold. 3.What is your favorite animal that you have sold? 5. If you could only go to a show at one location, where would it be? My favorite place to go show is the

6.When you are not working cattle, what do you like to do?

When I’m not in the barn I enjoy hunting/ fishing and spending time with my fiancé and our 3 dogs.

7.What is your favorite part of a steer or heifer to fit or clip?

Unlike most people, my favorite part to clip is actually the front 1/3. I love the challenge and patience it takes to get them smooth.

8.Who’s had the greatest impact on your life?

There are so many people I could use to answer this question. Every person that has ever dedicated their time teach me something. As I stated earlier, I’ve been very fortunate to have had some great role models throughout the years. 9.What do you attribute your success to? I attribute a lot of my success to my family and my customers. Without either one of them my business would not be where it is today. 10.What are your plans for the future? My plans for the future are continuing to sell cattle to best of my ability and residing in Fontanelle with my fiancé Sidney. I hope to better my business each year and continue meeting new people along the way.

The story of Ratliff Cattle began back when farms had a little bit of everything to them; sheep, hogs, cattle, a hen house, and some farm ground. Gail Ratliff, or Tub as he’s better known, was born in 1938 and grew up near a small town in eastern Kansas known as Westphalia. Tub grew up showing sheep and in 1955 had the Grand Champion Market Lamb at the Kansas Junior Livestock Show. However, it wasn’t until he had a family of his own when his only son, David, came to him with the desire to show cattle. Liking the muscling and added thickness they saw being developed by the Limousin breed, and knowing several prominent area breeders, they decided to purchase their first registered Limousin female in 1979. Their female was purchased from Ron and Carolyn Holland who were instrumental in getting the first Limousin bull to the United States. With this purchase, Ratliff Cherry Creek Limousin was born. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s Cherry Creek Farms exhibited at several shows including the National Western Stock Show in the yards as well as on the hill. They also attended Limousin Junior Nationals showing in the open show, exhibiting at the American Royal, Kansas State Fair, the Ozark Empire, and countless others. During this time, David and his wife Michelle had started a family and

raised their 5 children in the heart of the Limousin breed. Morgan, Cheyanne, Madison, Chase, and Maycee attended the Limousin Junior National show for roughly 20 years, only missing a couple in between. Morgan’s first Limousin Junior Nationals being held in Kansas City in 2000 and ending with Maycee’s last in West Monroe, Louisiana in 2020. Throughout this time, the kids had many accomplishments in the ring with steers, heifers, and bred and owns. For several years, the farm also had an annual registered Limousin bull sale and occasionally an open female sale. In 2010, the family farm had a dispersal of their Limousin herd. However, growing up in the breed, David, Michelle, and the kids just couldn’t seem to stay away from Limousin Cattle. The kids stuck to their roots of showing Limousin but diversified in other breeds throughout their show careers. They were fortunate enough to show a few good ones along the way that are now an important part of their donor arsenal. It was when David’s kids began showing different breeds, that the farm became better known as Ratliff Cattle. In the fall of 2015, Herman and Judy Symens convinced Tub to take a vacation, something he had not done for several years. The 3 went up to Canada where Tub found a Purebred Limousin by the name of Riverstone

Charmed. When he came home he showed pictures and videos he had taken on his iPad, convincing his family how great of a female she really was. Despite the low quality photos he had taken, the family was convinced to try and buy her. A few weeks later Tub and David purchased the

middle child, that showed Riverstone Charmed. Charmed, or as the family nicknamed “Larissa” gave the family an unforgettable show career, with their biggest success being the first ever Limousin female to Supreme the North American International Livestock Expedition in

female over the phone, all while sitting in the kid’s high school parking lot between Chase, Madison, and Maycee’s basketball games. This would be the moment that the family credits in forever defining their operation. It was Madison Ratliff, the

2016. Not only did Larissa have a huge impact on the families show career, but it’s the impact she’s made as a donor that has forever changed Ratliff Cattle. Their second biggest accomplishment is being able to say they raised the 2021 Supreme Champion female at NAILE 5 years

later. (Ratliff HowBoutIt 008H, shown by Sara Sullivan) Not only are they the first two Limousin females to win NAILE, but they are the first mother daughter duo to ever supreme the show to date. The family credits a great deal of their success to Tub and David, not only for providing the kids an amazing show career growing up, but also for all their hard work over the years in establishing what Ratliff Cattle is now today. In an industry where family is everything, the Ratliff kids couldn’t be more thankful for their parents and Tub for allowing them to grow up in the show industry. Because of two generations of hard working and driven men, the kids grew up seeing the work it

takes to be separated from the Average Joe to what it takes to win. They pride themselves in the countless hours spent alongside each other learning not only about cattle, but the greater attributes the industry has to offer. Currently, David and his son, Chase, manage Ratliff Cattle together. It consists of a commercial cow/ calf operation in eastern Kansas that focuses on embryo transfers for not only themselves, but also as a satellite for others. The donor’s the family accumulated throughout their show careers have become a vital role in producing females for their annual sale. These consisting of Riverstone Charmed, Purple Ribbon, Danica 5017, MRRC Forever Charmed, CZRC Fashion, and Ratliff Gabby. The first sale was held in the Fall of 2019 with the most recent being this past October. The family has been extremely fortunate over the last couple of years in capturing some success with females that they have sold. It could not have been made possible without the great families and homes that continue to trust the genetics of their program. They look forward in continuing to grow their operation and work alongside many future families to come. •

pril of 2020 we arrived in Sullivan,

Indiana in the middle of the pandemic. Houston and Mercedes were excited for us to get here and so were

we! The kids helped us unpack, move things around, and they were eager to do anything we needed! We spent a lot of time together and we were really able to get to know the kids thanks to the pandemic. Lots of meals were shared, lots of time in the wash rack, and lots of time spent getting the farm set up. If you have ever had the chance to be at home with the kids then you surely were involved in an intense game of

ping pong. We have watched several adults with a lot of athletic ability compete with the kids including myself… I have never seen anybody beat them! The games are fun, intense, and extremely competitive! They are definitely a ping pong DUO! The Ferree Family has had ties to Sullivan, Indiana for decades. The family has had a commercial cow calf herd and have been row cropping for years. Now their cattle herd consists mainly of Angus and Simmentals. We currently run about 65 cows and flush the top end. They are well known in the community and the kids have been active members of 4-H. Houston has mastered his goat operation by achieving Grand Champion Market Goat at the Sullivan County Fair the last two years! Houston is a spunky fun 16 year old with a free spirit. He is extremely kind and respectful to those older than himself. In addition to showing cattle Houston is involved in tennis, basketball, and loves spending time with his friends. His tennis career lead him to the Indiana State Tournament in 2021 and we really enjoyed seeing

the competitive side of him come out to play! Houston has had an amazing year, Grand Champion Female at the 2021 Shorthorn Junior Nationals, Grand Champion Angus Female at the 2021 Atlantic Nationals, 2021 North American Futurity, 2021 World Beef Expo, and lately showing the Supreme Female at the 2021 Hoosier Beef Expo! Mercedes is an adorable 13 year old who loves tic-toc and her Percentage Simmental Ivy! She is sweet, fun, funny, outgoing and has a natural talent to be able to connect with her show heifers. She is on the Sullivan Golden Arrows Dance Team and Tennis team. She has a very competitive side and works very hard at everything she is involved with at school and home. Mercedes has shown the Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Female at the 2021 American Royal, Reserve Grand Champion Female at the 2021 Maine Anjou Junior Nationals, Reserve Grand Champion Cow Calf at the 2021 Angus Junior Nationals, Supreme Female at the 2021Kentucky Beef Expo, Supreme Female at the 2020 Hoosier Beef Expo and Reserve Supreme Female at the 2021 Hoosier Beef Congress. The wins are fun but Houston and Mercedes recent personal wins at showmanship are amazing! We have watched both of them grow over the last year and a half in the show ring. Their levels of showmanship skills and confidence they represent are heart warming. We are big sticklers on showmanship and we have worked with and encouraged both Houston and Mercedes to work hard at showmanship. We have always said to them, “Anything worth doing is worth over doing”. Recently Mercedes won Intermediate Showman at the 2021 Indiana State Fair and the Junior Showmanship Title at the 2021 Hoosier Beef Congress. Houston recently won Reserve Intermediate
