THE SIRE EDITION FEATURES ALL OF THE TOP NEW SIRES IN THE INDUSTRY!

If you’re going to do something, be the best at it. The people and genetics that fill up the pages of this March/April 2023 Sire Edition are prime examples of individuals who have mastered their craft. Genetics without question get better and stronger with each new year. Flipping through the pages of this issue, you will find the best sires the industry has to offer - no matter what breed you are interested in or what your operation needs. When putting together the magazine, our goal is to make this issue the most powerful tool for breeders to use when choosing what sire to breed to. Beyond the sires, industry leading products, livestock sales and events advertised in this issue, the quality of people we were able to highlight is unmatched. Be sure to read about our new Hall of Fame members, Blind Badger Ranch, Brian Fox and Hayden

Schroeder. They set the bar when it comes to raising livestock and exhibiting them at a whole different level.

Throughout the show results you will also find exclusive bios from Champions from the National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth and San Antonio! One of my favorite aspects of the magazine is looking beyond the backdrop and learning about the people behind the champions. While January and February have already been busier than ever, things are not slowing down as we move into Spring! We have enjoyed working with the top jackpots and expos in the country as they gear up for their Spring shows! Be sure to view our full list of Upcoming Events and Judges in this issue. Each day is filled with opportunity. Make it your purpose to take

C alving ease speCialists We don’t believe in breeding your heifers to a bull just because he is easy calving, they need to be marketable after they are born. Vigor, live calves, eye appeal, and maternal, it’s not a one day thing. If it’s the steer calves that cross the scales, the heifer calves that stay in your program, or the next great marketable bull you, those first calf heifers need to be able to make you a profit from that first calf and we have a lineup of calving ease bulls that has the ablity to do just that! Boy Lover Boy is a bull that is proving time and again that he isn’t only going to calve easy, but he’s going to make the kind of cattle that hit your replacement pen, turn out his sons as herd bulls, and make future donors. Good cattle make good cattle and he is no exception. We bought into Lover Boy based on udder quality, disposi- tion, feet and legs, and of course something that everyone loves the fact that he is about as sure fire calving ease as you can make a purebred Simmental. We watched Gib Yardley calve in 3 different sets of Lover Boy calves before we jumped on the wagon. We have bred him HEAVY to our first calvers for two years and we got along great.

breeding program consists of an extensive artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) program. A group of heifer, steer and bull calves will be handpicked and broke in preparation for private treaty sales throughout the year. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS THE OPERATION HAS HAD OVER THE YEARS? Due to having such a small amount of precipitation a year we must run cattle on large pastures and therefore we have stuck to what we know can be successful in our conditions. We concentrate on breeding

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF BLIND BADGER RANCH? Blind Badger Ranch is located south of Fort Morgan, Colorado and is owned by Jim Hett and Bud Gamel. They established the operation back in 1999, and currently run 550 head of Maine-Anjou, Angus, and Simmental influenced females, which is the foundation of their breeding program. The ranch consists of 17,500 acres. 6,600 acres are dryland wheat, corn, millet, and fallow. They also farm 900 acres of irrigated grass and alfalfa hay. Pastures account for another 10,000 acres of the ranch. Their

sound, hearty, easy fleshing, maternal cattle with good feet and legs backed by good pedigrees. TELL US ABOUT YOUR GENETICS… The core of BBR’s genetics roots within the Maine- Anjou breed. We have been very fortunate to be part of some great influential bulls in this breed throughout the years, which has helped push our program forward. Some of these bulls include: X, X2, Rumor Mill, Data Bank, Memphis Mafia, All Me and End Game. On

the donor side, we have sought out females that we thought would match good with our bulls. Boss Beauty 84M, Sedgwicks Erica 5T, Eva, Joudy, Dominatrix and Zena have been the fundamental females in our donor pen. When purchasing cattle, whether a bull, show heifer or donor cow, we have never put the banner first in our purchasing decisions. We have always been interested in cattle with the pedigree and phenotype that can produce offspring to make

the next generation better.

yearlings at Cattlemen’s Congress in the grand drive, all carrying the BBR prefix. › Premier Breeder at American Royal, NAILE, OKC and NWSS this past show season › ' 21/'22 Breeder of the Year! › Also this year we are excited to have produced four bulls that will be promoted for semen sales: Kingston, Made Man, Mafia Max and Maine Attraction.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST SUCCESSES YOU HAVE HAD? We are very fortunate to work with some of the most talented people within the industry. The traders, customers, families and showman that take these animals to the next level is what has truly lead to our success. › Most recently one of the coolest moments was having all four of the division grand and reserve

the Maine-Anjou breed being recognized as top contenders for supreme titles nationwide. BBR’s goals moving forward is to stick to the basics of breeding sound structured, easy fleshing females while trying to add as many of the extras as we can without compromising structure and balance. ■

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS MOVING FORWARD?

The Maine Anjou breed as a whole has us as excited as ever to be a part of it. Currently, there are so many different and diverse pedigrees and options within our sire directory, which is a testament to all the breeders within the Maine-Anjou breed. We just hope to continue to push that envelope forward with our genetics and want to keep seeing

BBR is proud to see our genetics working for others across the country and fortunate to work with many loyal and repeat customer who represent the BBR prefix. We always look forward to working with new juniors and families.

rian Fox is the Ranch Manager for Blind Badger

Although there have been plenty of missed steps along the way, we have stayed true to the core goals of trying to make every calf crop better. It takes an entire team effort and our success wouldn’t be possible without Mike Hansen and Koda Yost. WHAT IS BRIAN’S BACKGROUND IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY? I grew up in central Minnesota on a row crop, hog and feedlot operation where working hard for the family farm was instill in our family by my parents, Greg and Sandi Fox. I grew up involved in the 4-H program showing dairy steers, hogs and beef cattle. I also participated on the livestock judging team, ending our judging career

as National Champions in Louisville. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Ag Science in River Falls, WI where I played football and met my wife Paula. During college I had the opportunity to learn a lot from Ed Cody and Roger Allen. After completion of college, I worked for Express Ranches, OK and Bill and Bret Cody, TX. The opportunity to work at breeding cattle operations along with show steer operations instilled in me the understanding of the importance of a good breeding base so you can stand behind your product and take care of your customers. Now I feel so blessed to be able to pass this experience on to my

children; Tyson, Hannah and Emery as they start their show career. ■ Congratulations Brian and Blind Badger Ranch on being inducted into our Hall of Fame! View all of our Hall of Fame Members starting on page 251!

Ranch in Fort Morgan, CO! He joins Blind Badger Ranch as one of our new Hall of Fame inductees! HOW HAS BRIAN FOX BEEN INFLUENTIAL TO BLIND BADGER RANCH? We have been very fortunate to have a great working relationship as a team at BBR which has allowed our program to continue to progress forward. From the moment I first started, Bud and Jim have always trusted me and giving me the opportunity to push the boundaries.

MAY WE ALL DADDY’S MONEY X IRISH WHISKEY

ACTUAL BIRTH WEIGHT OF 55 POUNDS LEGIT CALVING EASE! THE #1 CALVING EASE SIRE!! DNA: THF PHAF CADE CODE: MA4925 OWNED WITH: BRAD SMITH, BRIAN FOX I don’t think or hope we are the only people that always used to struggle with what to breed all our heifers too! There’s always the debate to we just breed them to have a small calf and not worry about staying up all night and stressing all day just not have a “throwaway calf” or do we try and get a stud right off the bat..... Well this is the bull we have complete faith in to allow you to reduce stress of calving heifers and still have really nice calves that can be marketed! May We All is extremely soft made, smooth shoulder and extremely sound like you would expect with a calving ease bull to be, but he has the added bone and stoutness that is required to have marketable cattle! There have already been countless high dollar progeny out of him in a limited couple sea- sons! There is no doubt that if you keep back numerous heifers and want extremely high quality calves the first time MYA is the #1 choice! Ask Anyone who has mass used this bull; he calves easier than any angus calving ease sire on market!!

61

RODGERSCATTLECO.COM

HERE I AM All we can really say about this bull is how blessed we are to have found one of, if not the greatest bull, of our generation! The impact this bull has made on our family and families across the country whether it’s the bottom line and increas- ing the average of your calf crop, or winning a county fair to some of the most respectable cattle shows in the country, is truly second to none and will be hard to replicate! This bull will consistently throw calves that have “the look and build” it takes to win competitive shows! We love how this bull has been so versatile in the types of cows he works on from Monopoly, MAB, and maternal bred females like Whizard etc. Breed this bull as much as you possibly can and stock up on the semen to last you a while because there will only be ONE Here I Am and the way he stamps his progeny will be timeless!

IGWT is out of some of the most proven genetic lines there are in the entire industry both from the north and south! Hopefully you have happened to see the trend across the country in colored cattle making a huge jump in terms of champions and sale makers! Colored cattle are in and the demand is off the charts! We love how this bull really clicks awesome to Monopoly and MAB type females, and when you breed him to a rope necked great chested cow then hold onto your seats because it’ll be a fun ride! This bull will be one of the few in our industry that we will be talking about for a couple generations!!

We absolutely love this bull’s structure, foot and bone size, and great body shape!! We think he looks awfully similar to his full brother that won the Iowa State Fair…he’s just the solid black version. We think he will work in spots were HIA might not be the best fit in terms of being able to use him on cattle that need a shot of belly and flank. Jump on board here because we have all been waiting to use a bull of this caliber that will also add color to your calf crop!

MATERNAL MADE X BROKER/ANGUS BW 87# ::THF PHAF:: RAISED BY MARK BALL :: BORN 3/5/18 SIMMENTAL REG #3540224 AMA REG#498883 PRICE: $35 good as it Gets

Here is one of absolute favorite young bulls that we truly believe will be the next great maternal sire!! Good As It Gets is one incredible looking mature bull that has the right foot shape, length of stride, and maintains his balance perfectly when you set him into motion! Unlike most maternal bulls and Angus sires when you step in behind GAIG he has the power and the natural width and dimension it seems like our industry is trending towards within both the heifer and steer rings! GAIG is a go to bull in our operation on our cows that we want to continue to make great females out of and to have a splash of color and keep the hairy quality ex- tremely good! Don’t be one of those in 8 years and say “I knew I should’ve been using that bull more but just didn’t have the patience to make a lot high quality females!” We truly feel like in years to come you will see this bull more consistently on the bottom of the pedigrees!

A PORTION OF THEIR $200,000 SALE TO SCHRAG AND NIKKEL TO BENEFIT MAINE-ANJOU YOUTH!

January was a busy month of shows and sales for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA). A highlight every year is the National Western Stock Show and hosting Maine- Anjou events in the historic Yards. A sale feature of this year’s Power In the Pens sale was Special Lot A.

Special Lot A offered buyers the opportunity to purchase 1/3 embryo interest in two exciting half-blood Maine- Anjou females – LDSC Stella 152K and LDSC Shirley 155K. This special lot commanded a sale price of $200,000 and sold to the Schrag and Nikkel Partnership. A portion of

this special lot is the largest lump sum gift received to the Reaching Beyond Maine-Anjou Foundation and will benefit the youth of this association and their programs for years to come. The AJMAA is thankful and grateful for every donor and sponsorship we receive

and know that we could not host our events without the generous support that is shown to our youth. Watch for a full story on the Gensini Family in the May/June/July issue of the Maine-Anjou Voice.

LAURIE’S HOMEMADE

DIRECTIONS CRUST

Combine flour, salt and butter in a bowl. Mix together with your hands until the butter is pea sized. Add cold water and lemon juice. Stir together until the mixture comes together into a ball. Do not overwork - you want lumps of butter throughout the dough. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to a narrow rectangle shape using a rolling pin. Fold the bottom third of the dough up on itself and then the top third down over that (like you would fold a letter). Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least 20 minutes. Take the dough out of the fridge, rotate it 90 degrees from your previous angle, and repeat your rolls and folds. Wrap and chill for at least another 20 minutes. Repeat this step two more times, chilling the dough for at least 20 minutes in between each fold. Allow the finished dough to chill while you prepare the filling. FILLING Preheat the over to 400°F. Cover the chicken and 1/2 the onion with water in a pressure cooker. Cook on the stove for 15 minutes once it comes to pressure. Allow the pressure cooker to cool/ depressurize once cooked.(You can boil, bake or even use rotisserie chicken if you prefer). Dice the chicken and reserve 1 3/4 Cups of the chicken stock for the filling. In a large skillet, cook the carrots, peas, onions and potatoes in the butter until tender. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the flour and mix together. Cook on low for 5 minutes. Add the chicken, reserved chicken stock and milk and mix together. Cook on low until the liquid thickens.

INGREDIENTS CRUST • 1 3/4 Cups All-Purpose Flour • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt • 14 Tablespoons Butter cubed • 3/4 Cup Cold Water add more if needed • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice • 1 Egg beaten FILLING • 1 lb. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast • 1 Onion diced finely • 5 Large Carrots sliced • 1 Cup Frozen Green Peas • 6 Medium Red Potatoes skinned and diced • 1/3 Cup Butter

92

• 1/3 Cup All-Purpose Flour • 1 3/4 Cups Chicken Broth • 2/3 Cup Milk • Salt & Pepper to Taste

PIE Remove chilling dough from the fridge. Divide into two equal parts and roll out into a circle large enough to cover your pie pan. Line 9” pie pan with half of the dough. Pour cooked filling into the pan and top with the other half of the dough. Pinch together the edges to seal. Brush the top of the pie crust with beaten egg. Cut holes into the top pie crust to allow steam to escape while cooking. Place in preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes (or until the crust is golden brown). Enjoy!

School in Kersey, CO with plans of pursuing my Bachelor Degree in Agriculture. I

have not yet decided on a

university but at the moment CSU, West Texas A&M University and

OSU are in the running. I have two older siblings

NWSS Market Steers

y name is Justin Pfannebecker and I was fortunate enough to be chosen Grand Champion Market Steer at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Currently I am a senior at Platte Valley High

Elizabeth and Jacob. All of us have exhibited at the NWSS since it is in our home state. I have been showing cattle for 13 years as well as hogs the last 5 years. I am a 3rd generation Weld County 4h member so you

can say showing livestock is in my blood. “Stan The Man” and I only exhibited at a few jackpots before the big day in Denver. This was my last trip with a market steer to NWSS and I was determined to take a competitive steer. I have exhibited many times at the NWSS but none have been as exhilarating or successful as January 19, 2023. In 2022 I won Senior Showmanship and placed 1st in class 11 in the market steer show. This year my goal was to make sale again with a steer and try to compete in class 5, which I knew was one of the “heater” classes as we like to call it. The morning of the show my focus was fitting and presenting Stan to his best. The fat steer classes at the NWSS can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour with three judges on the panel. What I was hoping for was 1st or 2nd to ensure that I would make the livestock sale. After the judge’s card were turned in, they pointed at me with number one held up. I was ecstatic! I knew he was one of two steers the judges had all agreed on for the whole day of placing 1st. After the success of placing in Class 5 it was time to prepare for the Grand Drive. Nothing gets your heart pumping like the green carpet at the National Western Stock Show. As we walk into the ring the announcer says our name and where we are from.

Each judge gives a speech about the National Western, agriculture, and what the livestock industry means to them. The microphone is put away and it is time for the Grand Champion Market Steer to be selected. This year NWSS had chosen Kayden Halls to deliver the Grand Champion Slap as Part of the Make-a-Wish program. What I didn’t expect that day was to be the 2023 Grand Champion Market Steer. Ringside my family was overcome with emotions when I was selected. It is difficult to

explain the feeling. 13 years and 3 generations my family has been working for this moment. Since that day in Denver my life has not been as

108

glamorous. At home we run 200 mother cows and complete IVF embryo work. I am currently showing a product from our embryo program. My family and I also farm and produce high quality grass and alfalfa hay but the cattle side of the operation is what I am passionate about. What motivates me is seeing the potential calves my family and I have hand selected, bred and raise to maybe be one day be, “Stan the Man” also. ■
