DIRECTIONS 1. Heat oven to 425 degrees and line baking sheet with parchment and silicone. 2. In a large bowl combine flour and butter together using your fingers or a fork until it creates a bread crumb mixture making sure to not melt the butter. 3. Add the beaten eggs, sugar, blueberries, and baking powder and gently combine using a wooden spoon. 4. Slowly add the milk and vanilla and fully combine (it will be a soft, slightly wet dough). 5. Using a clean work surface cover with flour and turn out dough onto it. Sprinkle the top with flour and pat out dough slightly then fold in half. Turn 90 degrees and fold in half again. (This will help create a soft layer in your scones) (don’t overwork the dough and use extra flour if the dough is too sticky to work with). 6. Gently roll out using a rolling pin until about 1” thick. Using a circle cutter (or a knife if you prefer a square or triangle scone) cut out scones by pressing down not twisting the cutter. You can re roll scraps and roll out again to use all the dough, but the second roll is not as tender. Place on prepared baking sheets and brush the top with the egg wash making sure to not get it on the sides so that they rise. 7. Bake for 15 minutes or until they are risen and golden brown (depending on the size of the scone the baking time may differ).. 8. While the scones bake in a medium to large bowl beat heavy cream with an electric mixer or by hand until medium to stiff peaks form. Add sugar and cream cheese to cream and beat until smooth and fully combined. (Stop once incorporated to not over beat). 9. Transfer to serving bowl and refrigerate until serving. I preferred scones warm out of the oven and served with the faux cream and jam. Can be served plain or any other toping of your choice. Store in the fridge. •

family’s first annual production sale in 1915. August 1, 1920, Darrell Sutor (3rd generation) was born. Beside his father, Earl they continued to raise high quality Hereford cattle. Show- ing at Chicago, Kansas City, Denver as well as the prominent state and regional shows. An interesting story that must be told is that during World War II German prisoners of war were held at Fort Hays, 40 miles southeast of the ranch. Every day a truck was loaded up with prisoners and brought to the ranch. They built the sale barn used for many years. The relationship between the Sutors and the prisoners was a good one. They were paid, fed, and remained friends after the war. Darrell married Joy in 1943 and they

began their family; Linda Sutor, 1953 Darla Sutor Moore (4th generation), and Lorna Sutor Pelton, carried on the Sutor traditions of showing and rais- ing cattle during their younger years. Darla and Lorna went on to own and operate farms/ranches of their own. Darla married Charlie Moore and they own and operate H Bar Ranch in Scott County, Kansas. Their children Dana Moore Pieper, Kevin Moore, and Shellie Moore Collins (5th gen- eration), each have found their place among the industry too. Dana and her husband David along with their two children Cody & Cady currently run the historical ranch, now named Pieper Land & Cattle. They continue to operate a Hereford herd along with

he Collins sisters: Cierra, Claire and Cricket, were destined from the beginning to be cattlewomen. With roots of cattle breeding and history spanning both sides of their ancestry. The Legacies of two ranches. Kinder Farms/Collins Cattle Inc., Frederick, Oklahoma and Sutor Hereford Farms, Palco, Kansas are the backbone of their parents’ upbringing and the foundations of the present operations. The fact that Colby and Shellie didn’t meet until she was 21 and he was 28 seems ironic now. The similarities of the family’s histories and how inter- twined their family’s history is, makes it seem like they should have grown up together. But the two-decade time difference of each family stepping- stones to the present contributed to the late meeting. Here is the history behind Shellie’s maternal family’s history… Sutor Hereford Farms, Zurich, KS was founded in 1885 by three brothers referred by the family as the uncles; Henry, Martin and John (1st gen- eration) Having safely arrived from Ireland, traveled to Illinois, they obtained a timber claim in Rooks County, KS establishing the original homestead. Over the years Hereford cattle were introduced and became the primary breed of cattle raised. Earl Sutor (2nd generation) was born in … during his management of the ranch he catapulted Sutor Hereford Farms to the forefront of the breed. He held the

other breeds of cattle. Kevin resides in Scott County with his children Kamdyn and Charli where the Moore’s were raised. Shellie married Colby in 2006, they have Cierra (13), Claire (10) & Cricket (6) (6th generation). Kinder Colby Collins ranching roots also run on his maternal side. In 1906 L.L. Kinder (1st generation) home- steaded in Tillman County, Okla- homa. Colby jokes that the reason behind homesteading here was this is where the mule died, or the wheel fell

off the wagon. L.L. brought the first Hereford into the area in 1912, Master Sonny, from Illinois. The Kinder’s had their first Hereford production sale 1928. On August 1, 1920, Troy Kinder (2nd generation) was born. It is again ironic that both of our grandpa’s were born on the same day. Troy focused on line breeding Horned Hereford cattle with Anxiety the 4th as the foundation. Troy married Vivian and in 1942 Judy Kinder Collins (3rd generation) was born and 1947 Ginger Kinder were their two daughters who

also carried on the family tradition of showing and raising cattle. Judy married C.A. Collins in 1965. Their children Christy and Kinder Colby (4th generation) have each found their niche in the cattle industry Christy as a livestock marketer (CCi.LIVE) and owner of Los Rojas and Colby who co-manages Collins Cattle Inc. with his father C.A. raising show steers and heifers along with high quality seed stock. The 5th generation of Kinder/Collins belongs to Colby and Shellie’s daughters Cierra, Claire, and Cricket. They each have found their love of ranching, showing, and raising cattle. Colby and Shellie both cut their teeth showing Hereford cattle. They both exhibited at Junior Nationals (Shellie) and Hereford Expos (Colby) starting at 7. They can’t think of a better way to raise their three daughters than with Hereford cattle. Collins Ranch is now a much more diversified cattle operation that focuses on quality and overall performance and not as much one specific breed. •

My name is Rhylee Rodgers. I live in Searsboro, IA. I am 12 years old. I have shown for 7 years and I have shown at the National Western for 2 years. My steer’s name is Yellers. I am very blessed that God gave me the opportunity to show him at the National Western. I also want to thank my dad because he’s the one that is the biggest help and I can’t thank him enough for what he has done for me. I want to thank my mom because she is there day in and day out when I need her. I want to thank my sister who was always out in the barn helping. I want to thank my little brother for being my happiness. The last one I want to thank are the people that help us at all the shows - Dustin, Dalton,

Wooster, Ryan Mesch and Eric Rea. I can’t thank you enough for what you guys do for me, but I most of all I want to thank God for everything. My steer was my best friend and I am so thankful I got to show him. When I was a little girl my biggest dream was winning the National Western, but now I am so blessed I got this huge opportunity to do so. It will be a memory I will never forget. After being selected Grand Champion I received the traveling trophy. This is such an honor because my family knew Nick very well. He was one of my Dad’s best friends. I am so blessed I got this opportunity and thank you for everyone’s help to get me there. •

Hello, my name is Aven Horn. I am the 16 year old daughter of Brandon and Brek Horn. I am from Anson Texas and I am a sophomore at Clyde High School. I have been showing steers since the 3rd grade, but have been around cattle my entire life. My family owns and operates Horn Livestock where we raise show steers and heifers along with bulls and cows for breeding stock. God blessed me with a father that raises show cattle for a living. I have had multiple successes in the show ring that would not have been possible without him. When I am not showing

family to have “tea” with the Grand and Reserve Steers. Taking my steer downtown and walking him into the historic hotel was a once in a lifetime opportunity. My steer, Bacardi, was a very special calf to me because he had such a good demeanor about him. It was like he knew that he was an outstanding, one-of-kind steer. As soon as I put a show halter on him, he knew what it meant and was ready to show off. I am so thankful for everyone that helped me. First off, I want to thank my dad, Brandon Horn, without him none of this would have been possible. He puts in countless hours for me and my calves and for that I could never thank him enough. Next, I want to thank my mom. She

steers, I enjoy playing volleyball and running track. I hope to play volleyball in college in a few years. I am also active in FFA, Student Council and FCA. Showing at National Western this

supports me in everything that I do and is always helping in any way that she can. I want to thank Jagger for helping us fit Bacardi and being so happy for me and all of my accomplishments. Another person that was a huge part of this win is Brock Welshans. He not only produced the mating, he clipped my

year was very special to me. I showed there my first couple of years, but haven’t been back until this year. In Denver, family members are the only ones that are allowed to handle and fit the calves. That made it

very sentimental to me when I won Reserve Grand because it showed that our hard work as a family had paid off. During the Grand Drive I had countless

calf at home and made him look the part. A big Thank You to Tony Myers, a long-time friend of ours, who bought the embryo from Brock and then gave us the opportunity to buy this awesome steer. I would also like to thank one more guy who is always on our team, Kirby Eaves. He has been a constant supporter of me and my steers every single year. Next, I would like to thank our barn crew. It takes an entire team to make all of this happen and I am so thankful for my team. Finally, I would like to thank The National Western Stock Show for putting on another great show and for having a phenomenal auction to support the youth involved in agriculture. Overall, my experience at NWSS 2022 was one I will cherish for the rest of my life. •

emotions. So many people were standing around the ring and watching online. There were 24 quality steers on the green carpet and the 3 judges were deciding which two calves they were going to choose. When I saw the judge come up to my steer and raise his hand before he slapped him, a sense of accomplishment washed over me. I was so shocked, thankful, emotional, grateful, and happy all at the same time. I think The National Western is one of the most unique shows because people come from all over the United States to show there. I got to meet a lot of new friends from different states that I never would’ve had the opportunity to meet. Another unique aspect of Denver is being able to go to the Brown Palace with the Rodgers

My name is Alia Rodgers, and I’m from Napa, California. I am 19 years old and have shown livestock for ten years now. While I was not born into a family involved in this industry, I quickly fell in love with it when I started showing. This industry has taught me what I want to do with the rest of my life, and I do not know where I would be without it. This will be my final year showing pigs, and while I am so sad to be stepping out of the show ring, I cannot wait to find my place on the sidelines. In the meantime, I will be attending Utah State University with a major in Animal Science and a minor in Agribusiness. Although I do not know exactly where my road leads quite yet, I plan to start a business back home in Napa with my sister Mardi, supporting the agriculture of California. When I got drawn for Denver, I knew I would be traveling to Gabe Salmon’s barn to see if I could feed another barrow out of Charm, the sow who raised my Reserve Champion Dark Cross at the California Youth Ag Expo in 2021. With the help of my family, we picked out a blue barrow I went on to name CJ, who we would raise for Denver. Blue pigs have never been my favorite, but CJ was a special pig and definitely changed my mind. Somehow our green little prospect barrow grew into a champion on a national stage, and I could not be

more grateful. The 2022 National Western was the first and last time I stepped foot in the show ring in Denver. I have watched the show and admired the backdrop photos for as long as I can remember. Having the opportunity to show on the green carpet was a dream come true, and getting a NWSS banner was the cherry on top. The win was incredible and the animal behind it even more so, but what meant the most were the hugs I got at the edge of the show ring. I could not

have asked for a better team than the one I have. My first thank you goes to my dad, Tim, mom, Shanna, and sister Mardi because without their support, I could have never shown pigs in the first place. Thank the whole Redd family for everything they have done for me. Thank you to the Salmons family and the rest of the crew at S-Squared Showpigs. Thank you to James Purkey and the entire Smith family. Finally, thank you to all my other friends, family, and teammates for your continued support throughout this crazy journey. •
