THE SHOWTIMES IS GOING BIG FOR THE 2023 NATIONAL WESTERN STOCK SHOW!

January 2023 has arrived! Our Jan/ Feb 2023 Stock Show Edition of The Showtimes has a new look for the new year! It is always fun to see an issue come together right before print and this one is no different. While it is always fun working on ads for cattle that the public hasn’t seen, it is always neat watching someone read our new issue at a show. There are so many cool features in this issue. You will find coverage from the NAILE throughout this issue! We always enjoy traveling to shows and taking photos and videos because we can share with you what we see. We had a great time in Louisville and finally get to share many of our favorite photos with you! I always feel like our Faces and Places really tell the story of what a show is like. You can see a backdrop photo or a cool ring shot, but you don’t see the whole picture until you see them all together. This issue also includes a few awesome

Hall of Fame members. Find out who they are starting on page 44! You will also want to check out our coverage of the Cheyenne Livestock Expo and the Autumn Classic. There are also many great articles, show results and livestock judging results featured throughout this issue of The Showtimes!

When we think about January, we think about Denver. The Showtimes is honored to be a Livestock Media Partner of the 2023 National Western Stock Show! We will have our booth and store on the Hill in Stadium Arena, a booth in the Stockyards Event Center in the Yards as well as in the Herd Sire Displays! Be sure to follow us on social media for full coverage throughout the event! There is nothing like Denver! We are looking forward to big things in 2023! The Showtimes is celebrating 16

WHAT MAKES THE SCOTTEN FAMILY UNIQUE? To be honest my family is about as traditional as they come, and an often saying around the house is “normal is underrated.” My family is extremely grounded to our values and the way we try and operate every day. In my opinion, consistency is the key of having a successful life regardless of your career or goals growing up. For instance, if you look at the successful people in our industry they hardly deviate in their demeanor

NEW MEMBER JAN 2023

and the way they conduct themselves in a professional manner. I thoroughly feel that’s how my parents have tried to raise my brother and I. In my opinion, what makes our family special is our tight knit bond and love for one another. My judging kids often make fun of me for being on my phone quite often in the judging van, but you can count that I’ll always be talking with a member of our crew checking and seeing how things are going at home or what they may have going on that day. I was very fortunate and blessed to be born into a family that no matter what time day or night there is always someone there. As tight knit as we are, we root for each other like no other. If one of us has success we all do, and we’ve followed that mold since I can remember. My brother and I push each other to become better versions of ourselves and to be honest if he succeeds that’s just as good of a

feeling if not even better than if I do something well. The industry we work in is driven by success and the kids that judge for my brother and I know how hard we pull for one another and how much it means to us that they all do well. We strive to be people that younger members of our industry look up to and set a good example in all aspects of life. I know we talk a lot about livestock judging but I feel our success determined by the students’ doings 5-10 years after they leave the collegiate ranks just as much as turning in cards and hearing the results at a contest. It’s up to us to help mold these people and be there for them when they need us. We are extremely loyal to the people that are a member of the “team” as we call it. If they need something they know we are always one phone call away. To sum this up, I like how we work as a team for a common goal and

45

are willing to sacrifice as a family to get there. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I used to have the fear of letting down especially those that are close to me. I’m sure several can resign with putting success at the forefront of their mission. To be honest with you, after my son Clancy came along, I realized there is a lot more to life than winning a judging contest or making it to a backdrop at a livestock show. What pushes me now is to be a better person for my family and bring those around me closer to God. Proverbs 29:18 is my favorite verse, it states “Where there is no vision people perish.” With age and maturity, I realized there is a lot more to life

than garnering success, if I’m a good person for my family and push those around me to see the big picture in life I feel like I have done my job. Don’t get me wrong, I realize success is important and it’s the driving factor of the world we live in today; but we have to keep in mind what success is. Success to me is a tool that provides us with a platform. To those reading this, I hope you know that people look up to you and especially your children or your close family and friends, how you use this tool is up to you. You can use success to grow greed or arrogance, you can also use it as a tool to build new connections and continue to push this industry forward as a whole. I told

46

my judging team this on the first day of practice, I think of success as a light, shine the light on yourself and it blinds you where you can’t move forward, shine the light on other people and towards the path you believe is right and you can walk forever. My favorite quote is “champions are not arrogant; champions exhibit a quiet confidence that demonstrate the belief they have in themselves. They know it is the little things that separate the good from the great and the great from the best!” I mentioned in the first question that our family tries to be consistent with all aspects of life. My inspiration and driving force is to be consistent but never complacent with

where I’m at, I strive to be a better person than I was the day before. Obviously being 10 hours away from the ranch isn’t easy, but I realize that sitting in the same place provides comfort, but comfort isn’t growth. WHO/WHAT HAS INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST? My family members have influenced me the most, obviously I am around them the majority of the time and that is what most people will say but it is especially true in my case. All members of my family have played a pivotal role in my life, but my mom and dad have made the sacrifices to allow my brother and I to do what we love and are passionate about. A good educator is priceless, and I feel like

we had the best. My dad taught us the foundational knowledge for livestock driving through cows or talking about goats was and still is a daily discussion. I didn’t really know what he was doing at the time when I was younger but those are the memories that I look back on and cherish the most. They have instilled the character and values in us to be successful long term and for that I am very thankful. We have also been very fortunate to be coached by or coached alongside some great people that are extremely well known for being obviously talented people but set a standard for great character. For that I say thank you.

conversation piece and a very good question! I’m currently at Texas Tech coaching the livestock judging team alongside Dr. Rathmann while working on my PhD in ruminant nutrition, so I will be here for at least the next 3 ½ years. West Texas has welcomed me with open arms and the atmosphere down here makes me feel at home. Having the opportunity to work alongside one of the all-time great livestock evaluators in an incredibly prestigious program is an opportunity that I don’t take for granted. My passion is youth development and using livestock as a tool to do so is the best thing in the world. Being able to do this at an elite level is just a bonus. Moral of the story

WHAT’S NEXT? This is always a great

is, I hope to continue to coach after I complete my PhD and be surrounded by the best young minds in the industry. Spencer is currently at Redlands community college in El Reno, Oklahoma. He has been there for the last several years and is very fortunate to be surrounded by the quality of people he works alongside on a daily basis. He always says how he couldn’t do what he does without the support of the other faculty there in the agriculture department at Darlington. I know I’m biased but he has done an incredible job and has had some of the best young minds in the sport go through that program, and I know he hopes to continue to take it to new heights. I

know he plans to continue coaching at a collegiate level for the foreseeable future. My mom and dad are holding the fort down back in Missouri while we are down south. My mom, Krista, is an educator at Nevada Middle School teaching English, she easily has the hardest job out of the crew! My dad, Shannon, is still raising cattle and goats that keep him busy. We try and generate cattle and goats that can compete at an elite level. Everyone knows how fast this game moves and to get to the top it takes an extreme amount of time and effort. Without my brother and I at home it’s tough balancing everything but I give him a hard time and tell him it’s keeping him young!

We plan to keep advancing as a family and trying to get better every day in all aspects of life. Clancy is my son, and he has been a really bright light for all of us. He’s back in Missouri running around all over the place and enjoys helping with chores and riding around on his tractors. I know we are all excited to start taking him to livestock shows with stock of his own but enjoying the days of him being a little guy and just loving life. We stay pretty busy around the house and on the road all the time, but we wouldn’t have it any other way… time marches on at a pretty fast manner! ■

I do want to take a second and say thank you to The

Showtimes crew for the opportunity to do this, but most importantly serving as a progressive asset for our industry as a whole. No one promotes the youth of the stock show circle like you guys, and I want to say thank you! It takes people like you guys to take what we do to new heights and your group no question does that!

($2,000) steers so they had to work harder and out show their competition. This ultimately led to his competing in and winning the State and National Junior Hereford field days! The show stick ultimately landed Jim his first job with V-Bar Hereford Ranch in Stanton, TX after he graduated from Texas A&M in 1975 Throughout the years, Jim has been highly involved in the livestock industry from being a 4-H County Agent in Navarro County in Corsicana, TX, a Livestock Field Man for The Cattleman Magazine, the Assistant Executive Director of TSCRA and the Executive Director of

been to the Fort Worth Steer

Show, you have seen Jim Kelley. For forty-three years, Jim has been a steer superintendent at the historic event and in 2020 he was elevated to the title of Honorary Vice President. Jim has been involved in multiple phases of the cattle and horse business for over 50 years. He grew up in a very strong FFA program in Lampasas. His best friend had the Grand steer two years in a row at the FWSSR – setting the bar high for Jim. Jim and his sister couldn’t afford high dollar

the American Paint Horse Association. In 2005, he was hired for his dream job as Manager of Superior Livestock Auction in Fort Worth. His newest endeavor is selling half and whole beef to consumers, primarily Black and Red Angus. He is proud of the fact that 60% of his beef grading prime with the other 40% choice. He manages them from conception to the plate. FWSSR Steer Show & Showmanship The FWSSR Steer Show is blessed to have a great

group of Superintendents that all have special talents. Lawyers, bankers, lobbyists, business owners, ranchers, and a couple of ex county agents! People who have experienced the Fort Worth Steer Show know first-hand how smooth of an operation it is getting 70+ head of steers per class through the ring. That can be attributed to the knowledge and skill of these volunteers. Jim, along with the other fifteen superintendents have a combined 350 years of service to the show. A fun fact, they walk 11-18 miles

each day on their Fitbit during the two-day show. Jim’s first year as a superintendent there were 700-800 head of steers. In 2023, they are looking at close to 1,600! One of Jim’s favorite things about the show, however, is that they start each day with a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Times change, genetics advance, and things evolve. Jim Kelley and his passion and dedication to the youth of Texas, however, has remained constant. ■

53 years ago in 1969, Jim showed his first steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show. Since that time, he and his son Perry have shown four species of livestock in about a dozen different divisions of the stock show. ● Scramble Heifers ● Breeding Cattle ● Commercial Heifer Sale ● Market Barrows ● Breeding Swine ● Market Wether Goats ● Steers ● Heifers

han Phillips is a long time

in the cattle industry for years before that first Simmental cow was purchased, but in a different capacity. Chan’s great- grandfather, grandfather and father were all commercial cattlemen and worked in the stockyards industry. Chan’s father and grandfather owned a custom meat packing facility in Maysville, KY until 2006. Production agriculture was Chan’s passion but throwing in a little twist when the focus

was on purebred cattle and the show cattle industry. Chan caught the fever once he showed his first Simmental steer at the Inaugural North American International Livestock Exposition in 1974. It took off from there. Chan considers himself lucky to have had mentors that showed him the ropes in his early years. People like Bill Couch and Charlie Boyd Sr. are a big reason that Chan has experienced the success

Simmental enthusiast. His love for the Simmental breed and purebred cattle industry started at the young age of 6, when he purchased his first Simmental cow in 1972. Over the last 50 years, he has accomplished things that 6-year-old boy couldn’t even dream of. Chan’s family was involved

89

that he has in the industry. Post high school graduation Chan tried his hand at the collegiate life, but working on cattle and learning from some of the best in the business sounded more appealing for Chan. He went to work for operations in Kentucky and Texas. After meeting his wife, Tonya Snider at the AJSA National Classic in Des Moines, goals and aspirations changed. After

their marriage, Chan

and Tonya started a custom fitting service in an old tobacco barn

on the Phillips family farm in Maysville, KY. Phillips Cattle Company had the privilege of exhibiting and managing some of the best Simmental genetics in the breed at that time. Phillips Cattle Company quickly outgrew the tobacco barn and Chan and Tonya built a show barn on 17 acres where they operated the custom fitting service until 2006. The custom fitting service saw a lot of success over the years. At times, the crew was caring for over 140 head of show and sale cattle; luckily for the Phillips’, they had some great members on their crew that made it all seem like a breeze. Chan was able to acquire customers through word of mouth and contacts made throughout the industry. A big part of his business was derived by Doug Parke with DP Sales. As Doug managed sales, he would refer his customers to Chan so their cattle could be promoted. The crew would hit all the winter majors, head out for the beef expo run, hit too many state fairs, then be ready to hit fall majors to do it all again. The success of the fitting service allowed for Chan’s brother Keith to come home from Express Ranches and be a part of the operation. In 2004, Keith along with his new bride, Lindsay, and Chan and Tonya partnered and created Rocking P Livestock. The goal for Rocking P has always been simple, to breed sound,

functional cattle that will work for the commercial producer but also breed cattle with enough finesse and look to compete in the showring. As the responsibilities of running a cow herd grew and Chan’s children, Morgan and AK started showing, the last trip for Phillips Cattle Company was the 2006 National Western Stock Show. As Rocking P continued to grow, Chan had the opportunity to serve as the Farm Manager for Hudson Pines Farm in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Every Monday Chan would board a plane to New York to manage the Rockefeller’s Simmental Operation and then come back home each weekend to spend time with family. Keith was the one who kept things going at home so that Chan could travel and create new opportunities for the Phillips family. Chan stepped down as Farm Manager in 2008 as Morgan was starting high school. He served as a consultant for Hudson Pines until 2014 when he was approached by Craig McCallum with Circle M Farms. His consultant role with Circle M Farms allowed him to be at home a little more. All while this was taking place, Morgan and AK were showing at a very competitive level, mostly with bred and owned females that came directly from Rocking P cow families. Rocking P has been blessed with some

90

really good partners that allowed the kids to show females out of some of the most dominant cow families in the Simmental breed. Since Morgan and AK have aged out of the American Junior Simmental Association, Keith and Lindsay’s children, Josie and Wyatt have taken over the showing and have had tremendous success. As it stands today, Chan and Tonya still work with Circle M Farms and manage the farm in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. Missouri wasn’t really in the plan until their grandson, Beau Wallace was born; now they live roughly 12 miles from Beau and his parents, Sam and Morgan. Chan and Craig are never not looking for the next great one to add to the herd or show string. Craig has provided many opportunities for not only Chan and Tonya, but the Phillips family as a whole. Keith and his family operate Rocking P and raise embryo calves for Circle M and Red River Farms, where Chan’s son, AK is the General Manager. Rocking P and Circle M both market cattle through Red River’s Ladies of the Lonestar each fall. All 3 operations market bulls through the Paternal Power Bull Sale in Kentucky each spring. Chan considers himself blessed in so many ways. Not many people get to do what they love everyday, especially with people that mean so much to them. Chan is especially thankful for the opportunity to do all of this with his family, even though they may not all live a couple miles apart like they once did. Whether it be Rocking P, Circle M, Red River or Wallace Cattle Company, if you’ve got a Phillips involved you get the whole family—they’re a pretty tight knit group. Chan looks forward for what is to come for his family as we enter the winter show season and looks forward to seeing friends along the way. ■
