After over fifteen years of publishing The Showtimes, this Summer while at the Colorado State Fair, I witnessed one of the most special moments that sums up our tag line, This Is Why We Show. Many of you may have seen Stetson Gabel’s iconic handshake photo on The Showtimes social media after he exhibited the Grand Champion Steer in Pueblo. If a picture is worth a thousand words, that one is worth a million. What you did not see, was Stetson surrounded by his close family and friends after our photoshoot with everyone and our Showtimes banner following the show. Before he would allow anyone to leave, he made a speech thanking everyone for all of their help and support. He did not do it for any cameras or to post online. It was an intimate moment so special that I felt honored to have been standing there to witness it. This Is Why We Show. There are so many cliché things about not doing it for the banners or to win; but the fact is that it all matters. If we didn’t strive to win, we wouldn’t learn the lessons that go with falling short of those goals. If we didn’t have goals to achieve, we wouldn’t understand why families and friends giving their time to support us is so special. The life we all live is not an easy one. To do it right, you must make sacrifices.
The people we are fortunate to cover and market for in The Showtimes do it right. Make note of that as you flip through the pages of the magazine. This issue is filled with the crème de la crème of the livestock industry. Whether you are looking for top notch genetics, products, or services, you will find them here. I encourage you to tag pages, make calls and network with the people featured in the magazine as you strive to win. To follow suit with Stetson, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is and who has ever been a part of The Showtimes. Thank you to the advertisers who believe in what my family and I started and trust us with marketing your livelihoods. Thank you to all of the photographers who allow us to publish their photos so we can provide the livestock industry with the best show coverage possible. Thank you to all the families and exhibitors who have chosen to do it right and have been a blessing for us to highlight. You All Are Why We Show! • We look forward to seeing everyone this Fall in Kansas City where we are the Official Media Partner of the American Royal!

At age four I took my first steps into the showring leading my heifer I named Batgirl, little did anyone know that day a fire, passion, and love started that would carry on eighteen years later. During the late 90s my parents hosted the Showgirls Elite Heifer Sale that consisted of mainly Maine-Anjou, Chianina and Shorthorn females. Fast forward a few years, to avoid competing against my parents’ customers I
Nationals in Kansas City, I was hooked. Soon junior nationals became “the best week of summer break.” A few years later we bought a Hereford heifer from Bruce Everhart that went on to be Reserve Supreme Heifer at Indiana State Fair in 2011 and became our foundation Hereford donor female. In high school it was hard to find my balance of showing cattle, playing basketball, and still be a kid hanging with friends. Most of my friends growing up thought what my family and I do made no sense. My last year of 4-H I told my parents
I wanted get back into the Maine-Anjou’s, so we purchased a High Maine heifer that year that became my most difficult project. The only way I was able to show her was with a nose ring. She was Reserve Supreme Heifer at Indiana State Fair in 2019 and Reserve Supreme Maine-Anjou at the National Western in 2020. Those wins made all the rope burns, days kicked, and the tears worth it. The fall before my freshman year of college we went to Dustin Ogburn’s to look at a Hereford heifer. We drove to this field to find a baby Hereford
swimming in a pond on this super-hot Kentucky day. That swimming baby Hereford became my best friend and favorite show heifer of all time. She was named Reserve Supreme Hereford as a calf in NAILE in 2019. That summer during the pandemic she won her division at Junior Nationals. Following junior nationals, she passed away. My heart was shattered. The following months I struggled in the barn, at times I honestly was not sure if I would ever find the passion again. What we do in this industry is tough. My family is
found a love for the Hereford breed in 2007. I attended my first Hereford Junior
like most others who put their whole hearts in what we do. Our family vacations always included a national cattle show. This past year I have been able to experience the livestock industry from a new perspective, behind the lens of a camera working with Next Level Images. This past fall after NAILE we were not in market for a Hereford heifer. Until Ryan Rash changed our mind when he told us his stepdad, James Bright, had one worth our time to look at. We began our venture to Crockett, Texas the following day. As soon as I took one look at her a rush of energy flowed through me. This past Hereford
Junior Nationals was the definition of a dream come true. After being selected Reserve Supreme Polled Female everything went into a blur. As some may know I am not super affectionate person or like hugs but I this moment was an exception. All I can remember is I had the biggest smile. Later that night someone asked me, “Now that the day was over what was your favorite part?” The answer was a no brainer, looking back in the day my favorite part was when we were dressing my heifer for grand drive. All my favorite people were there, jamming to my favorite playlist, all was good in that moment. I am so grateful to all the people that
42
made this junior national possible.
Thankful, blessed, and grateful is an
understatement that I was gifted with two parents to share this crazy life with. Showing cattle has always been what my mom, dad, and I do together. I wouldn’t trade all our barn fights for anything and trust me there has been a lot. My experience in the livestock industry has provided a plethora of lifetime opportunities and has truly been the backbone of my life for the last twenty-one years. I have spent countless days, months, and years in a livestock barn and while the phrase, “Were you born in a barn?” may not apply to me literally, most days it seems to be an appropriate way to describe my life over the last 21 years. •

WALK BY FAITH NOT BY SIGHT is a Bible verse that can mean so many things to so many people. For Teagan Joseph, it has taken on a more literal sense each day that passes. Teagan was born with a rare genetic condition called Lebers Congenital Amaurosis. This condition only affects 3000 people in the United States annually. It is a condition that effects the retina. Most people that are born with this condition are completely blind by the age of 1. “It’s funny, you have about a 25% chance of getting this disease if both parents are a carrier and I just happen to be the lucky 25%. Ironically, that’s the only raffle I’ve ever won.” Teagan’s case is a mild
84
form in that she still has some of her vision. “My world is a mesh of shapes, shadows and shades. I don’t see a lot of details but I can usually take all the pieces and put together a picture,” is how Teagan describes what she can see. This doesn’t seem to slow this girl down. She
has been riding horses since she was 6 months old. “When I was old enough to sit up on my own, my grandma made sure I was on a saddle with her riding.” Teagan has shown her horse Kit in multiple

parents, my sister, my grandparents,
model for me and some one I look up to. He has overcome so much in his life and he still continues to not only accomplish so much but sets the bar high for those in the agriculture industry.” Teagan hopes to continue that legacy in the Ag industry by applying to be a state FFA officer and later getting her certificate for equine assisted therapy. She wants to provide a way for veterans and first responders to heal by using horses. “Horses and livestock for me have always been healing. The animals don’t care if there’s something different about you and they accept you as you are. I think that’s a great example of God’s love for us. He doesn’t see our ‘imperfections’ but loves us exactly how He made us. In fact, I believe He can use the broken especially to further His kingdom.” •
aunts, uncles and the breeders and brokers I have, I would not have the success I’ve had. But more importantly I would not have anything without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is the only reason I can get out of bed and continue to do the things I get to do.” Teagan was afraid at first when her vision started getting worse. She describes that learning to square up her lamb was different than others. She couldn’t always tell where the judge was in the ring or what was being asked of her. “I was so afraid of being different from everyone else. I didn’t want my vision to define me. I finally realized that asking for
and even won a National title on her at the age of 11. She also wanted to show sheep when she was old enough. “I wanted to show livestock when I could. My dad used to show cattle and lambs. He thought cattle might be too much so we started with sheep and I’ve loved every minute of it!” Teagan has had a very successful career at showing sheep. She was reserve showmanship in her junior year at her county fair. She won reserve champion at her county fair in 2019 and has won the dorset division at her county fair 3 times. Her biggest accomplishment was reserve champion at the 2022 CO state fair. She did get a chance to show cattle this year. She showed her angus heifer at her county fair and was supreme heifer. “2022 was definitely a blessed year! I know that everyone works hard and every time you step into the ring you want that hard work to pay off. There are times we have had banner years and others we just didn’t have the animal that that judge liked. But through it all, we show as a family and those victories and losses are not just one persons.” Teagan describes the “village” she has in all her projects. “I know that without my
85
accommodations like having the judge use verbal cues instead
of hand motions didn’t make me
different but allowed me to show with the same advantages as everyone else.” Teagan will be a senior this year at Eaton
High School. She is the FFA chapter president, the FCA leader, sings in the high school choir and was the 2021 treasurer for the district FFA. She does attribute her courage and motivation to go after her dreams to her great uncle Steve Gabel. “My uncle Steve has always been a role

recipe
Servings: Makes 2 loaves Cook Time: 65 Minutes INGREDIENTS • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking soda • ½ teaspoon baking powder • 3 teaspoons pumpkin pie seasoning • 1½ sticks (¾ cup) unsalted butter, softened • 2 cups sugar • 2 large eggs • 2 cups fresh pureed pumpkin or

mixture might look grainy and curdled at this point that's okay. 4. Add the flour mixture and stir by hand at this point until fully combined. Finally stir in the chopped nuts. 5. Turn the batter into the prepared pans, dividing evenly, and bake for 65 – 75 minutes, or until a cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean (Depending on your Oven the time varies). Let the loaves cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. 6. Store wrapped in plastic in the fridge. ENJOY.
INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 325°F and set an oven rack in the middle position. Generously grease two 8 x 4-inch loaf pans with butter and dust with flour. 2. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, Pumpkin Pie Seasoning. Whisk until well combined; set aside. 3. In a large bowl using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until just blended. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Continue beating a few minutes until light and fluffy. Gently spoon in the pumpkin and mix thoroughly. The
Scrape out the flesh of the cooked pumpkin leaving the skin intact. Dispose of the Skin and puree the pumpkin flesh using a food processor or hand mixer until the puree is smooth and lump free. It is now ready to use in the pumpkin bread recipe or any other pumpkin recipes that you may need. Store any leftovers in a container in the fridge.
FOR THE PUMPKIN PUREE This time of year, pumpkins are plentiful around my house. That means its Pumpkin Bread time! You will need one sugar pie pumpkin (I grow mine, but most grocery stores or farmers markets have them this time of year). Wash the outside of the pumpkin and remove the stem. Cut in half and clean out all the seeds. Cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with oil so the pumpkin doesn’t stick. Place the pumpkin cut side down on the baking sheet and roast
at 400 Degrees for 30min - 60min depending on the size of pumpkin until it is soft to the touch. Cool upside down on the baking tray (I place a cooling rack under the pumpkin to let the moisture drip out) until it becomes room temperature.

I am Drake Fletcher from Athens, IL. I have recently had the opportunity to exhibit the grand champion barrow at the Illinois State Fair. The barrow was purchased from Bobell Farms this past spring. The barrow we call “Turbo” would be a Soul x Never Before x Dirty Secret. This barrow has had the upper hand given his genetics since the day he hit the ground. Being surrounded by the team we have built over the years and then going on to achieve the biggest dream of them all is truly humbling. As a team we have taken the losses, and celebrated the success together. I am truly blessed to have been given these opportunities and it would not be possible without the continued support from the many family and friends behind the scene! •

One of the greatest opportunities I have ever had is the opportunity to be raised in a barn. I am thankful for my parents to provide such a work intensive learning place for me. Growing up showing livestock my brother and I have been surrounded by great role models and people we look up to. We have been taught many different things from each, but through our time showing we have figured out that consistency and attention to detail are the two most important things to be successful in anything you do. Through the summers we have shown four different species, which we found out takes four times the work. Along with playing football in the fall and wrestling through the winter we always seem to be busy. We have been overwhelmed at times but as a team we get through the early mornings and late nights. This past summer we made sure we kept our priorities straight and did the little things right all summer. Which is extremely hard when you have your hands full and lose a member or two of the team to go to a show. There are only a couple of shows we have the opportunity to go to as a whole family. We spend most of our summer dividing and conquering to get as much done as possible. It’s hard to send everyone to the show when there are three other species at home to work on. Which is why the Illinois State Fair is one of our favorite shows. It’s one of the few shows throughout the summer where the whole family can go. It’s also the busiest show of the year as we take almost everything, leaving our barns empty. It’s the only show throughout the year we take all 4 species too and it’s always been one of the shows we prepare heavily for. This past state fair was definitely one that showed the hours we put in were worth it. As Nolan had the Grand Champion Market Goat and I had the Grand Champion Market Lamb. It is a huge deal to win a market show at your state fair, but to do it with your brother is an experience not many get. The memories we made through the long hours in the small ruminate barn were not always easy, but we made the best of them and in the end, it was all worth it. •
