BRUSSEL SPROUTS CRISPY BACON

DIRECTIONS There are a ton of different ways to make this dish; in the air fryer, oven or on the stove. My Favorite way for a quick dinner side dish or special occasion is stove top pan fried. 1. In a large skillet over medium heat begin cooking bacon stirring often to break up the clumps. (If the bacon doesn’t render a lot of fat add 1 Tbsp. of oil to the bacon before adding Brussels) 2. Just before the bacon is completely cooked add the Brussel sprouts to the skillet. If using fresh Brussels add ¼ cup of water and cover to steam for 5 minutes. 3. Remove lid and continue to cook on medium high until the bacon is cooked through and the Brussels are caramelized and slightly crispy. 4. Drizzle the honey and balsamic vinegar over and stir in to distribute evenly. Salt and pepper to taste. 5. Continue to cook until the balsamic/ honey mixture has created a glaze over the brussels 3-4 minutes. 6. You can leave on low stirring often on the stove while you finish the rest of your meal or serve right way. Best served hot but I love the cold left overs the next day as a snack. •

58

INGREDIENTS • 1 ¼ Pounds medium Brussel Sprouts trimmed (Stumps cut and loose outer leaves removed) and halved. You can also use two bags of frozen thawed and cut in half and strained of liquid • 5-8 slices of bacon chopped • 3-4 Tablespoons of Balsamic Vinegar Did You Know?! Balsamic Vinegar is made from the same grapes as wine! • 2 teaspoons honey • ½ teaspoon Salt • ½ teaspoon black pepper

recipe

Enjoy!

GEFFERT

Krisha grew up in the great state of Wyoming with several generations of production Ag on both sides of her family. Her mom is a saint for all the time she spent shuffling her from one sports activity to the next all while helping take care of a herd of animals. She showed just about everything. Judging

was always a big part of her life. She started recording reasons at a very young age. When it came time to go to college she called up Chris Mullinix, and the rest is history. While judging at Butler, she lucked into finding herself in the right place with the right people and had a lot of fun and success!

She continued on with judging while attending Colorado State majoring in Animal Science/Ag business. Despite the climate challenges and lack of corn production, they developed Custis Show Pigs and went on to work with a lot of great families that have with much success. While attending

CSU Krisha was granted an internship opportunity with ADM. This internship led to the job she has today as a ShowTec Specialist for the company. She met her husband, Shea Geffert, at a cow sale! They now work together at Geffert Cattle Company and live in Wisconsin. •

71

In 20 plus years of traveling with judging teams, I’ve had the good fortune to coach a number of very talented young people, but some just stick out! Krisha has always been an amazing talent, but her competitiveness is off the charts! She had such a passion to learn and you just knew someday she’d do big things in the livestock industry. Watching her in the ring is just fun! Her evaluation ability is outstanding, and her ability to communicate her thoughts to exhibitors and onlookers is both entertaining and always spot on. Most importantly, she does it with a level of honesty and conviction that has helped her break down barriers in what is still, unfortunately, a male dominated game. She’s a rockstar and I couldn’t be more proud to have played a role in her development! -Chris Mullinix (Krisha's Coach at Butler.)

Krisha is one of the most intelligent and greatest true livestock evaluators I have ever interacted with. No matter what species she brought a true stockpersons perspective to every contest when marking cards and giving reasons. She excelled in the reasons room and seldom was ever beat in any contest. She was a leader on the team and always pushed her teammates to reach their full potential. No matter if we were playing cards in the van, practicing in the classroom, or judging in a contest Krisha wanted to win. She is one of the most competitive and driven people I know. Krisha can judge any species at any show at any level and wow the exhibitors and the crowd with her placing prowess and oral description of the livestock on the microphone. I am most proud of the impact that Krisha has had on the youth that she has interacted with. Whether she has sold them a show pig or provided them consulting advice on how to feed and or fit their project she is someone exhibitors look up to. Krisha is a one-of-a-kind talented and gifted person, and I am humbled by the fact that I had the opportunity to work with her as a student at Colorado State University. - Dr. Brett Kaysen (Krisha's Coach at Colorado State University.)

FLASHBACK Krisha was the Adams County (Colorado) 4-H Livestock Judging Coach back in 2006. She is pictured below with The Showtimes Owners Laurie and Lisa Reid. Their team was the Champion Senior Team in Gunnison that year!

What makes Megan Blankenship NEXT LEVEL ? A passion and love for the industry that has existed since I was born - I grew up devoted to our family farm and carried a camera around with me constantly taking photos of every cow on the place until my mom put an end to the nonstop film development! I was surprisingly a very shy child (although no one believes that anymore!) - I never wanted to leave the farm until I discovered livestock shows and that involvement brought me out of my shell. I was fortunate to work around and learn from so many amazing people and developed my career through real world education, both in livestock & photography. And it is the people around me that continue to make Next Level truly NEXT LEVEL. Our team shares my passion and dedication to the industry and to the magic of creating the best backdrops and best candid photos we can, all while having a good time and embracing the opportunities to meet new people and share in some of the very best moments. We are so lucky to work with so many great events and photo some of the best livestock in the world and we don’t take that responsibility lightly. We live and breathe this industry and that deep connection is vital to our skills staying current and our dedication to providing the best work possible. I cannot list all of the people who make Next Level since there are so, so many, but I communicate daily with Emma Mathews, Payton Farmer & Megan Anderson about photo things, livestock things and life. They help me balance the overlapping events and share in the heavy workload and join me on many of our Next Level adventures!

How do you incorporate FAMILY and travel? I’m blessed with an incredible support system at home and on the road. My husband, Matthew, is a super dad/ cow man when I am gone long stretches and he gets some assistance from my family too! I’m extremely thankful for technology that keeps me constantly in touch and the kids have both mastered FaceTime. It’s tough to be away - the busy days and wonderful people I work with keep me happily distracted, but whenever it does work out that I can bring a kiddo along or the whole family comes to a show with me, it’s so nice to have them there! It also gives credit to the phrase “it takes a village” and we have an AMAZING one! From photo team members to show families who treat our little ones like their own, I am so grateful for the community feel stock shows have. Watching the kids develop instant friendships with other little ones or learn from my amazing colleagues or even having them hop in and hand out cards or get ears, it’s the best environment to raise kids in…and Adalynn & Aksel are super travelers who both have been to more states and on more flights than the majority of the population! What INSPIRES you? The privilege of documenting a show and the programs of those exhibiting is hugely inspiring to me. Knowing that the images we create will be the lasting memories of an event keeps me working my hardest to provide the best photos for families, for breeders and for events. The knowledge that many of our images will impact breeding decisions and purchasing decisions is humbling. Every

75

person and every animal that crosses in front of our camera has a story and has a lot of hard work, time and dedication involved in reaching the show ring. A photo captures a moment for those individuals forever and we are constantly reminded that people hang their favorites in their homes or use them for marketing purposes or share them on their social media. I’ve always been aware of the value of the work, but I know this even more as our little ones begin their show careers and the photos of their moments in the ring are priceless! Who/what has INFLUENCED you the most? This is a hard one to narrow down. I’ve always been influenced by the beauty of the world around me - I’m one of those people who can take an extra hour checking cows simply to soak up all the gorgeous views and study all the calves and analyze cows. Wanting to commit all the moments I can to memory is part of my passion for what a photo can do. And there are so many people I can credit with influencing me career wise - Linde gave me my first opportunity to photo a show and taught me so much about kindness and positivity within this work, Joelynn Rathmann inspired me to consider show photography, Bruce Kuehl and Pearl taught me many of the basics of a good backdrop, hours spent shooting alongside Cindy & Darla taught me even more about getting the most out of each animal while having fun interactions with exhibitors, and so many of the photographers I have worked with over the years left their mark and influenced how I see things and how I take pictures. My lifetime raising cattle started my love for the industry. The Jensen family and my time at K-State furthered my livestock knowledge and connection to agriculture and the show community. Over the years I have continually learned from the people around me - breeders, exhibitors and fellow photographers. My wonderful circle of people around me now make me a better photographer and a better human and I LOVE the ability to work with people who constantly teach and build one another up. And of course my husband and my kids. Matthew is a never ending sounding board wether it be looking at cattle in the pasture or rehashing a show I just shot, discussing all the livestock and occasionally analyzing what I could do to make my photos better (sometimes overanalyzing if you ask him…) and Adalynn and Aksel are full of questions about photos and about livestock and it keeps me pushing to be my best in order to be a wife & mother they can be proud of. What 's NEXT ? Hopefully a continuation of what Next Level has become. Throughout the years I have spent working in this industry, I have developed a strong sense of what I believe the livestock photo industry needs in a good photography company - livestock oriented people first and foremost

with a deep knowledge of the species we photograph; high end photographers capable of seeing all the moments you want captured forever; and a friendly, fun, passionate group of people to work with. I love this industry and I love the magic of getting a photo just right. I love the people we meet and connections we make. I love knowing that we are there for people to help them preserve their biggest moments wether it be winning a show or winning a class or exhibiting at a dream show for the first time or a final time - we have felt those moments and know their value and take immense pride in being trusted to capture those moments. It fuels me and it fuels our team. A judge recently told me “God made you for this work” and I feel that in my soul. I hope to continue to grow the amazing team we currently have and our goal will always be to provide the best in show coverage for any event that would like to work with Next Level! •

ooking back at my ten year old self, I remember taking home a handful of the green shaving from The North American in Louisville. Believe it or not, still to this day we have those shavings. Seeing older kids from all around the livestock world showing with an insane amount of people watching made me eager to be one of them. Quickly our conversations on the way home led to a goal of showing at a “Major” one day.

The last ten years have gone by like a whirlwind. Never in a million years did I expect to top it off the way that I did in Kansas City at the American Royal, by attaining one of my family's lifetime goals. Loading up Scooter and leaving to head to Kansas City with hopes of just getting lucky enough to make the sale turned into something I still can’t quite wrap my head around. Being named Grand Champion Steer was unbelievable, while being selected as Overall Showman was the icing on the cake. Several times this year I had to reboot and remind myself of what my goals were. Scooter definitely had a personality plus. From managing to kick not only me, but also my mom right square in the face, to loving every minute of being in the limelight at Kansas City, he was unpredictable. The unknown is what makes each year exciting and yet nerve racking. With this being my last year in 4-H, the unknown was what made me keep pushing even when it was time to head to Purdue. It would have been so much easier to have my sister just do the work, but that just isn’t how I am wired. It’s a family affair in the barn and I wanted to do my part. Tucked away in Northeastern Indiana I pride myself on the fact that when my neighbors go for their evening walks they can watch family showmanship in the yard as they pass. Rather it be a heated moment

of steers not cooperating or lambs not bracing, it's still family time for myself and Harlee. The radio turned up way too loud, batting practice in the barn while the steers are eating, or bribing each other to see who has to let the steers out at night. These are the moments that will trump any banner or even framed picture. The common denominator in so many instances for me is family. As I leave one phase of my life that I will forever hold near and dear to my heart, the steer showring, I know it’s time to focus on what my future may hold. If I could look in a crystal ball, in five years I hope to have landed a career in Animal Agribusiness with a focus in Sales and Marketing. My role in this Industry is now altering as I have a dream of my mom and I judging showmanship at a show together. There is no doubt that I was taught at an early age how it feels to experience disappointment. Whether it's in the showring, calving pen, or softball field. Although learning how to do “life” the right way in terms of hard work, sacrifice, and building relationships trumps all. I challenge each of you to stay true to yourself, work hard, and chase every dream you may have because they might just come true. •

I started exhibiting swine in 2011 as a Cloverbud at the Meade County Fair, that is where my passion for the swine industry began. In 2016 I joined the National Junior Swine Association. By becoming a member of the NJSA, I have had the opportunity to travel and compete in shows across the country, including The American Royal. The first time I attended the American Royal in 2018 I set a goal to one day just make it to the sale, I never dreamed I would be Reserve Overall Market Hog. It was both rewarding and humbling to be a part of the grand drive and the youth livestock auction. Reaching your goals and walking away with a banner is definitely a great experience, but there is so much more to showing livestock and

being a part of this industry. By attending these shows I have developed lifelong friendships, learned the meaning of healthy competition, and learned the value of working hard to achieve your goals. Aside from learning the value of hard work, setting, and meeting your goals, I have also learned how to rise above failure, which I believe is a valuable lesson as well. I am currently a junior in high school and my future plans are to attend college and major in animal/veterinary science in hopes of becoming a veterinarian. Aside from showing pigs I enjoy hunting, golfing and hanging out with friends. •
