Hoge and then our Blackout 8 Interns. If you have never had the opportunity to visit with Dan, I strongly encourage you to jump at any opportunity to do so. What an honor it was for us to bring him out to Colorado to work with the exhibitors at our show! He will go down in history as a true Ambassador for the Livestock Industry. On the flip side of the coin were our Blackout 8 Interns. While just starting to make their impact, they were so talented and refreshing. Allie Bieber, Ally Majzel, Annalyse Leach, Jacob Fjeld, Jentri Reamy, Kaley Pieper, Olivia Lulich, Samantha Wileman, Tori Culp and Tori Fowler are amazing new additions to my contact list. I’ve hit on Industry Greats that make up the foundation and the future, but what about the heart? Our May 2022 Hall of Fame Inductees, Bobby and Mandi Maddox, check that box! They are a one-of-a-kind duo that are so good at what they do. Find out more about them on page 62. Good luck to everyone at this Summer’s Junior Nationals! Don’t be ordinary. • See on the road this Summer! Lisa M. Reid The Showtimes
“Ordinary is contagious. If you hang out with ordinary people, doing ordinary things, guess what you’re going to be? You will be ordinary as hell.” – Mark Hoge, Blackout 8 Grand Drive Speech Over the past 15+ years with The Showtimes, I have been fortunate to get to know so many crazy talented and inspiring individuals. People that have changed the industry and influenced me just the same. With this being the Junior National Edition, we have put together a very special magazine featuring some of the Industry Greats to influence today’s Juniors and tomorrow’s leaders. The front cover features none other than Sullivan Supply. I was able to visit with John Sullivan, owner of Sullivan Supply and Sullivan Farms, about their companies and the importance of raising your kids in Agriculture. Check out The Showtimes exclusive article, The Sullivan Legacy, on page 252. This May/June issue is your source for full Blackout Jackpot 8 coverage! We had an amazing weekend this past March in Loveland, Colorado hosting cattle, livestock judgers, interns, and judges for the most Electrifying Show of the Year! My two highlights of the weekend would be getting to spend time with Dan

C alving ease speCialists The question was posed, “Do you just like pretty cat- tle?” Why yes, yes we do. That being said why can’t we have it all? Why can’t have cattle with power, foot size, correctness, MUSCLE, and phenotypically cor- rect proportions that feed, that have nice udders, that have longevity and productivity bred into their pedi- gree? Why can’t we have bulls that will make cattle with that eye catching correctness and balance on the end of a lead rope that will hang a carcass, that grade, make cows that produce the year, after year, after year? Our answer is you can, we aren’t just show cattle. Griswold Cattle sees all ends of the industry, and simply put, we think you as consumer deserves more, let us help you get it. Don’t settle for mediocre.

also eat it as is like a soup with tortilla chips or a dipping sauce for my mini chili rellenos featured as the recipe in The Showtimes March/April 2021 issue! • 1. Place roast in crock pot and salt and
pepper it iberally. Add enough water to come about one inch up the side of the roast. Cook on high until fall apart and the bone easily pulls out. Size depends on the size of roast. Usually, 4-5 hours for me. 2. Remove pork from the pot, remove the bone and trim/remove fat. (Strain the drippings and keep them in the pot) Dice the pork into roughly 1’’ cubes.
CROCK POT RECIPE!
-OR- YOU CAN COOK ON STOVETOP
INGREDIENTS • Pork roast I use a bon- in Boston Butt, but loin works as well • 1 large onion Diced • ½ cup – Flour • Vegetable oil to pan fry • 1 - 28 oz can diced tomatoes I puree but can keep it chunky • 4 - 7oz can diced green chiles Het level is up to you!
46
3. In a large bowl toss the diced onion and pork with the flour. Coat the bottom of a large skillet with oil and heat on high till hot. (Can use a piece of onion the see when the oil starts to sizzle.) add all the pork and onion mixture to the hot pan and letting it get crispy then turning it over to crisp the other side. Cook until the flour coating turns golden brown. Salt and pepper to taste. 4. Add the pureed tomatoes and all four cans of
• ½ tsp – garlic powder • ½ tsp – chili powder • Salt pepper to taste
peppers (Juice included) to the dripping in the crock pot, along with the crispy pork and onions. Sprinkle in the garlic and chili powder and stir everything together.
5. cook on high for one hour. At this point it is ready to eat although I like to simmer on low all day. Enjoy!

SIMPLE ACTS OF KINDNESS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
n this industry, it seems like there is always a deal to be made, whether it’s negotiating the price on a steer, figuring out the details of a cow partnership, or deciding which
sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” So many times, when we go out of our way to show someone love,
we have a pre-conceived notion of what the response will be. We want love to be returned or at the very least, appreciated. The passage above reminds us that loving the people that are difficult to love is part of being a Christian. Doing things for these people to show them love with no expectations is hard. We want to turn it into a business deal. We envision some kind of reward for our actions, but this isn’t what love is about. Love is about freely giving with no expectations and praying that the other person may see Christ through us. Most of the people that are hard to love are fighting internal battles,
but a simple act of kindness toward them can make a difference, even if we can’t immediately see it. We don’t show them love because of who they are, but because of who God is and that is where we find the reward. The next time you put yourself out there and show kindness or present a gift to someone to show them love, remember that God didn’t have to love us either. It wasn’t a business deal when he sent His Son to die on the cross for us. We were not worthy, and we didn’t earn it. Our salvation is free to all that believe. •

kid is going to get to show which animal and why. It seems like everything we do is tied to incentives for one thing or another, but thankfully, love doesn’t work this way, even though sometimes we feel like it should. The Bible teaches us in Luke 6:32-36 32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even

How did you get started in the Livestock Industry? Mandi – I grew up on a farm and ranch. We raised and showed pigs, I also showed sheep my Jr. and Sr. years of high school. I would say my brother Justin Whitefield was a key part of getting me started in the industry. Bobby – I grew up on a farm and ranch and showed on a small scale. I would say my major influencer in getting me started in the industry is Dr. Bonham. How did you meet? We met through a mutual friend, Charlie Long. What are some of the most meaningful successes? Mandi – Defiantly the first time we won the San Antonio
Stock Show and Rodeo Steer Show together in 2008 shown by Kaiti Robinson, also in 2008 the Grand Steer at the Houston Stock Show and Rodeo shown by Madison Kelly. A few other special ones would be the 2015 Grand Steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo shown by Madilyn Priesmeyer, the 2017 Grand Steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo shown by Mikala Grady and the Patriot in 2020 shown by Mason Grady. Bobby – My first Fort Worth Grand in 1986 with Ed Priesmeyer and the Fort Worth Grand in 2015 with Ed’s daughter, Madilyn Priesmeyer. The whole year of 2017 was special, winning grand or reserve grand at seven major shows with Mikala Grady.
What is something most people don’t know about you? Both – Our lives have always been ruled by Boston Terriers, currently Charley and Izzy. Mandi – I showed pigs and sheep growing up, but never worked with show cattle until I met Bobby. Bobby – I showed sheep growing up and only a couple of steers my Jr. and Sr. years of high school. I also judged livestock in Junior College at Redlands Community College where I roomed with Steve Bonham, Ron Bailey and Mark Copus and was on the livestock judging team with Charlie Long. What experiences have led you to where you are now? Mandi – Meeting my husband and changing from

a cosmetologist for people to show steers. Also working for Steve Bonham and getting numerous opportunities helping families show cattle all over the country. Bobby – To make a very long story short, it started with my first job after JuCo, working for Charles and Betty Herzog and Stevie and Kent Herzog. Then working with Buddy Priesmeyer, John Ben Carrabba, Jim Martin, Mark Ray and Steve Bonham. They have all given me experiences that have led me to where I am today. What people have impacted your life the most? Mandi – My parents; my brother, Justin Whitefield; Shane Tinnin; my Ag teachers, Gary Ross and Mark Gary; and numerous friends along the way. Bobby – My parents, Buddy
Preismeyer, John Ben Carrabba, Steve Bonham, Ronald Cole, Gary Watts and numerous friends along the way. What is something you would like to accomplish going forward? Both – We plan to continue furthering our business, Melatoninimplants.com, which we share with Matt Turner and Shane Vanzant; to continue to be successful in the showring at the highest degree and lastly to live a long healthy life with each other. This is why you do it? Mandi – It is my passion. There is nothing mor gratifying than the process of helping kids reach their goal in the show ring. Bobby – I love the people and the competition.
