know that there is nothing more rewarding than

working with the soil, working with animals, or working with your family and friends. The Ree Heights special feature in this issue is a prime example of what our industry is made of. Deep roots and friendship that

are generational and lead to success. We are all living the American Dream. The Showtimes just came off an unbelievable January where our reach and social media impact was bigger than it has ever been with over 2.1 million reached on Facebook alone. We are going to ride that momentum into the rest of 2024 to offer you marketing and coverage like never before!

Our country was founded on hope. The work we all do in this season as an industry is fueled by it. Spring was my grandpa’s favorite time of the year because of the hope that comes with it. You plant your crops, breed your cattle, and plan your year in hope that the best is yet to come. This March/April 2024 Sire Edition of the Showtimes provides a tool for the livestock industry to use to make the best decisions for the coming year. The sires featured in this issue are the best of the best and may just help you produce the next great one. The family and champion exhibitor articles are road maps for what you can do yourself to become successful. Nothing in life is easy, but we are blessed to be the hardest working industry. We

The Showtimes was saddened with the loss of Hall of Fame member, Sheryl Clanton. She made a lasting impact on the livestock industry. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Clanton family.

Sheryl Jean Clanton, 63, of Bucyrus, Kansas, passed away on January 30, 2024, at KU Medical Center. She was born on April 18, 1960, to Gene and Norma McCorkendale in Olathe, Kansas. Sheryl grew up in Stanley, Kansas and graduated from Blue Valley High School in 1978. Following high school she earned an associate’s degree in accounting from Johnson County Community College. Sheryl then worked in the finance and banking business and for her family’s construction company, where she developed a passion for the industry. In 1979, Sheryl met the love of her life, Brett, and they were married in 1983. Together they started a family and raised two children, Bailey and Cole. She and Brett spent most of their lives in Stilwell and Bucyrus, dedicating many years to the construction industry. Sheryl was a trailblazer in what was traditionally considered a man’s world, demonstrating her determination, appreciation for hard work and dedication to the task at hand. Known to those who loved her as Sissy, Sis, and CiCi, she will be remembered for her kind and giving heart, unconditional love for family and friends, a contagious smile that would light up a room, occasional stubbornness and MGD 64. Sheryl embodied generosity, had a passion for serving others and the door was always open at the Clanton household. Holding true to her

servant spirit, she was an active member of the Catholic Church and its programs, spending many Mondays in the adoration chapel and living through faith. She maintained a lifelong commitment to youth organizations in the agriculture industry, benefiting countless young people through her philanthropic efforts. For several years, she was instrumental in leading volunteer efforts and fundraising for the American Royal Premium Auction, Livestock Committee and Friends of 4-H in Johnson County. As the co-chairman of the American Royal auction and livestock committees, she laid the groundwork for the annual exhibitor social and record-setting sales, including the first steer that sold for more than $100,000. Sheryl is survived by her husband, Brett; daughter, Bailey Clanton (significant other, Derek Ridder); son Cole (Allyson) Clanton, and one grandson, Crue Clanton. She is also survived by her brother, Daryl (Dawn) McCorkendale, mother-in-law Ramona Clanton, brother-in-law Curt D. (Debbie) Clanton, sister-in-law Vicki (Robert) Brandon, the Walmer and Rosewood crews, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends and family in the cattle and construction industries. Sheryl was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Norma Jean McCorkendale and father-in-law, Curt A. Clanton.

he heart of TC Reds

that his name would fit right in. Scott grew up in central Wisconsin where his family raised Angus cattle. Scott has had a passion for the cattle industry since he was a little boy. He and his siblings attended and exhibited at many cattle shows and helped with every aspect of their home farm. Most days Scott will say he was just happy to be in the show ring. Banners and buckles were not in reach most days, but Scott didn’t let that deter him from working hard and trying to improve every time he stepped in the ring. Scott had a dream

that someday he would take over the family farm and run a successful cow/ calf operation with the goal of producing and selling breeding stock all across the country. Mia grew up on a small hobby farm in Western Wisconsin. She was active in 4-H and showed at various livestock shows around the state. Scott and Mia met at cattle show in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. To say it was love at first sight is a stretch, but there was an obvious spark as many years later they would meet up again at Minnesota State Fair and the rest they say is history.

is family. Two T’s and a C to be exact; Ty, Calli and Tucker. People often ask why TC? How did you

come up with that name? The answer is simple… when Scott and Mia added Red Angus to Scott’s family’s angus operation back in the late 90’s they wanted to come up with a name that would be unique to them. T for Ty and C for Calli made it an easy decision. And when Tucker was born it was only logical

Scott’s philosophy has always been trying to improve their program. Over the years they have expanded their herds of blacks and reds by purchasing show heifers, donor quality females and herd bulls to improve their operation. Scott says, “You have to be willing to be critical of your own cattle. Realize that there is constant room for improvement. EPD’s, and genetics are important factors, but at the end of the day you need to like what you are looking at. There is nothing better than sitting in the pasture on a summer’s evening looking at a set of great looking cows and calves. Success looks different to everyone, be sure to be true to yourself and to your family and success will come.” Proud is an understatement when it comes to how Scott and Mia feel about their kids. Not only are Ty, Calli and Tucker the TC in TC Reds, but they are the heart and soul of it. Over the years the Bayer family has shown and bred many champions. Ty and Calli were competitive at many levels before Tucker was even around. Exhibiting champions in Denver, Louisville, Red Angus Jr Nationals and many state and regional shows. Ty and Calli were always each other’s biggest critics, but each other’s biggest supporter as well. Setting goals together and being happy for each other no matter who was on the end of the halter was what was important. When it

came Tucker’s turn to enter the ring it was clear that his siblings were going to continue the tradition of being his biggest critic and supporter. With his family behind him Tucker has gone on to succeed in the showring with banners being won at many shows across the country, Angus Show, Red Angus Jr Nationals and Wisconsin State Fair. T is for Ty and Ty is including Cattlemen’s Congress, National Jr currently managing TC Reds. After Ty graduated from Colorado State University, he came back to the family farm. Much like his dad, he had big dreams ahead of him. Ty has been the driving force and vision behind the growth and success of TC Reds. Expanding the herd of registered Angus and Red Angus as well as adding in a few Simmentals and club calf momma’s to the mix. TC Reds hold several sales throughout the year. Visions in Red in early December offers elite Red Angus show heifers, a joint bull sale with our friends the Weis family in February is the main bull marketing tool, selling show steers and heifers in the early Fall with Spengler cattle in Iowa as well as offering other Angus, Red Angus and Simmental show heifers, bred females and genetic offerings throughout the year on various other online sales. When Ty isn’t busy prepping sale cattle you might find him on the road judging a show. Ty

57

you will find him in the cooler working on his state fair steer before he has to head to football. There is a sixteen-year age spread between Tucker and his oldest sibling Ty and fifteen years between him and Calli. To say the three of them have a unique relationship is an understatement. Tucker keeps everyone on his toes and his newest favorite pastime is competing with Ty for favorite uncle status. Scott and Mia are happy to step back and support their kids however and whenever they need it. Their favorite new role is taking on the names Pappi and MiMi and getting to spend time with Paislee. Most days you will find Scott around the farm overseeing day to day operations. He will joke that many days its him taking orders from his kids. Mia stepped into a new role back in the fall of 2021 when she accepted the role of Director of Youth Programs and Foundation for the American Simmental Association. It’s a role that Mia wasn’t really looking for, but its one that she has embraced wholeheartedly.

has been honored judge many state and national shows, including Charolais Jr Nationals, Aksarben, American Royal and National Western as well as many state fair and other shows. He’s gotten to judge along side his dad, mom and sister, hopefully someday him and Tucker get a shot to judge together as well. Calli or the C of the operation lives in Cascade, Iowa with her husband Kale Spengler and daughter Paislee. Just ask any of Calli’s family and they will

tell you that even though Kale’s name doesn’t start with a C, he is an integral part of TC Reds and its success. Kale and Calli have busy careers in the Ag industry, but they are probably most excited about the future of Spengler Cattle and getting Paislee involved in the industry. Both Kale and Calli are no strangers to understanding the hard work it takes to succeed in this industry. They have both seen success in the ring and can’t wait to share that with their customers and especially Paislee. Calli is honored to of been asked

to judge showmanship at the National Jr Angus Show this summer in Madison, Wi. The Angus breed is near and dear to Calli and showmanship was always something she strived to succeed in. And finally, T stands for Tucker. Tucker is currently a sophomore in high school. His true love is showing cattle, but he also enjoys playing football and golfing. He has shown Angus, Red Angus, and Simmental females to success at many levels, but early summer mornings

58

Her position with the ASA keeps her busy advising the jr board, traveling to shows and planning Simmental Jr Nationals. She admits that sometimes she is away from home a bit more than she would like, but working with the outstanding breeders and amazing young people keep her going. It’s a running joke in the house that when someone ask Tucker where his Mom is…his reply is “taking care of other people’s kids” And Mia will tell you it really is the kids of the AJSA that keep her job fun and rewarding. The success of TC Reds wouldn’t be possible without the crew that helps them at home as well as on the show road. Brent Wirth has been their full-time herdsman for many years and he is the reason the rest of the family has the ability

to go to shows and travel. “Having Brent, someone who is like family, makes it easier to be gone when we are traveling” says Scott. The crew that helps them at the shows is also second to none. TC Reds thinks highly of their show crew. Their philosophy is simple; treat them like family and listen to their ideas and opinions and hopefully they come back and want to help year after year. Over the years TC Reds and the Bayer family has been blessed by this industry. Banners will come and go, but customers and friends that turn into family is what it is really all about. “We appreciate everyone who has helped us along the way. The cattle industry is a journey and one that we hope to be a part of for many years to come.” ●

Jennifer Poad is a Showtimes Hall of Fame Member! She continues to share the message in each issue of The Showtimes.

e’ve worked hard all year for it, and our major stock show season in Texas is finally here. Our steers that we’ve grown so attached to finally get to show us what they can do, but with that also comes having to say goodbye. We’ve shed lots of tears for some and had to have the conversation with Libbi that each steer was born to serve a purpose and put food on the table. This is something we know and accept from the start. We know that their time on this earth is temporary, and they were placed in our hands to serve a specific purpose. Our time on this earth is temporary also. Just like the steers, we have a purpose, should we choose to be a part of it. Our purpose is to love one another and spread the word of God. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 1:11- 14, “11 In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of

your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.” God has a plan and a purpose for each of us. He purposefully sent his son to die for our sins so that we may be saved. His purpose to save us was very intentional and came at a high price. When I really meditate on that, it makes me want to be a better Christian and live a more purposeful life. I want to be more thoughtful. I want to love more and give more. I appreciate what I have. I want to do things to serve Him. Just like the steers we show, we only get so many days here on earth. What are you going to do with it? ●
