Our dad Jim Reid touched every working part of The Showtimes. He helped make every black Showtimes Banner that hang in barns across the country. State Fair Season!

BRIAN J. REID OWNER / EDITOR

BRIAN WITH HIS DAD JIM AT THE 2018 ILLINOIS STATE FAIR. HE IS HOLDING A COPY OF OUR BIGGEST ISSUE EVER PRINTED!

The Showtimes August issue is finally here. The State Fair Edition is the one that we normally put a little extra into. Our designs have more detail, our ads are a little crazier and it's over double the size of any other issue of The Showtimes! We even have more fun with the cover! Sullivan Cattle Company is on the cover for the eighteenth time! It's been a long time since our first State Fair Edition. Back in 2007, it was only 60 pages and two of the three of us were still showing at State Fair! This issue is packed with Show Results from all of this Summer's Junior Nationals! You will also find Faces and Places from shows across the country including NAJRAE, Simmentals, Angus, Herefords, Limousin and Maine/ Chi! Plus, we have two very deserving Hall of Fame members! Find out who they are starting on page 366. This issue wouldn't be possible without all of our awesome advertisers from across the country! Thank you to everyone who advertised in The Showtimes! We would also like to thank all of the photographers for not only Show Results, but many of the Faces and Places as well. Finally, thank you to all of the

designers who sent in ads for this issue. Everyone's designs make this issue what it is. The August issue always takes more work, and this year is no different. It takes working long hours, most weekends and countless weeks in the office selling ads, laying out the magazine and creating designs. The Showtimes wouldn't be near what it is without the help of our mom Betty. She's the one most of you talk to on the phone or see at the shows. We can't wait to hit the road on our 2025 State Fair Tour! The State Fair's are some of my favorite shows to cover. There is nothing like a good State Fair. We will be distributing our

new issue as well as taking photos, filming videos and giving out cool stickers and giveaways! We look forward to seeing everyone at the State Fairs! Good luck! ●

Brandon will be judging the 2025 Illinois State Fair Junior Breeding Heifer Show.

ONE THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING. WHAT DIRECTION WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT GO? Change is inevitable, right? I do love that we become more skilled, more talented and more innovative with every generation. I feel that’s truly the definition of progress; however, we chase the extremes and fringe in the quest for that continued progress, and we slowly leave behind basic and fundamental principles that don’t change and are hallmarks of established success. Every successful business or entity has experienced this at some time. Those that are built on a firm fundamental foundation can navigate the trend changes without losing their identity. I love progress but I’m an old soul that feels foundational fundamentals are put here for a reason. If we all operate like the Bible suggests in Matthew chapter 7, we can continue to progress in a successful manner.

TWO YOU HAVE VERY STRONG ROOTS IN THE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW IT IMPACTS YOUR CURRENT INVOLVEMENT? Man, my roots in agriculture started a few generations before me. My mom’s family lived in a little country town and most of her siblings still live there. I have fond memories of riding along with her older brother feeding cows and taking care of livestock. My grandmother loved chickens. But my more developed path came from my dad’s side. They farmed and ranched almost all their lives. My dad and grandparents ran a registered Brahman ranch that they converted to a commercial cattle operation when he went to college. I spent as many Summers as I could helping them. From the age of 5 or 6 I chased my dad around the state of Texas watching him sort county and district shows (yes, he’s a living legend). I had a front row seat to what class, skill, and excellence looked like. Dad gave me the bug to want to sort shows and have an impact on young people. Because we exhibited all species of livestock, I have always wanted to be diverse in being able to sort multiple specie rings on a high level. THREE WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS A PERSON? My parents were my first biggest influences. Obviously, dad’s livestock knowledge passed on to me but my mom’s grit, determination, and big heart I feel also came my way. Lots

of folks that we purchased animals from made an impact as well: Kenny Herzog, Steve Bonham, and Brandon Horn in the cattle arena. Rodney Yates, Joe and Lance Calhoun, Wade Stevens (some of these won’t be very known). Rory Duelm and Horn with the pigs. My college judging coaches: Jerry McPeak, Blake Nelson, Chris Skaggs and Ryan Rathman obviously played a big role as well. I had the opportunity to hang out with Scott Schaake and Calvin Drake for 3 years while at K-State and they took my passion and saw in me the ability to sort shows on a national level. I very much so valued their mentorship. Today I’d say my wife has the biggest influence (other than Christ). She is the more talented eye of the family, and she continues to help me hone my skills and keeps me grounded. FOUR WHAT IS THE VALUE OF RAISING KIDS IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY? I’ll answer this one differently than most. Although I do believe the livestock industry is an incredible place to raise our kids. I feel God provides different vehicles for folks to navigate life in. As long as we commit to letting Him be in the driver’s seat, we can learn and endure so much more than we thought possible. This industry has taught my kids and I a lot about the value of discipline. The lessons of God’s timeline being superior to ours (especially when the result isn’t what we had planned). They have learned to network with people in positive ways even when it’s not the most convenient for yourself. I’m thankful God designed my life to be in this business and allows Kelly and I to raise our family in it. But I feel if He made me 6 foot 6 like I asked Him when I was younger, then possibly sports would have been the

vehicle - but the lessons would have remained the same. Seek Him first! FIVE WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE JUDGING MOMENTS? I have been blessed beyond measure to get to sort the shows that I get to and to go the places and meet the people that I have. But two memories come to mind. 2006 I was traveling with K-State and working for Schaake Farms at Denver. I was excited to be able to watch Scott sort steers at Denver and pick his brain on the way home after the show. Well, he didn’t realize he was supposed to hire an associate for the steer show. So, the night before he asked if I would assist him. I think I was so shocked and I’m not sure I really answered other than telling him I still had my banquet clothes so that would be fine. lol. The second class came along and he handed me the mic and said, “You didn’t think you were just going to walk around holding that clipboard did you?” I lost my breath in the middle of talking the 2nd place calf and had to stop and apologize to the crowd. I was hooked after that moment! That’s when judging livestock shows became my addiction. lol. The second was getting to sort the goats at San Antonio a year or two after doing the heifers there. My parents came and my mom’s older brother and aunt (whom was fighting cancer). I was very emotional at the end of that show. I’ve never sorted a show that I felt like I hope it would never end. I was in a different world that day. God was definitely in the room. I know I said two but sorting an Iowa jackpot with Braedon last year was pretty fun and memorable, but not planned. He jumped in at the last minute to ride along and I ended up lending him some clothes to sort in. I hope he’s up for a few more down the road. As a side note, I’m still waiting

on Kelly to agree to do one with me. Timing and calving have always been a challenge to make that work out.

SIX FAMILIES MAKE SACRIFICES ALL SUMMER TO TRY TO WIN THE STATE FAIR. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ABLE TO JUDGE THEM IN ILLINOIS?

The time, the money, the sweat equity does not go unnoticed. I feel the reason this business can be so fulfilling is that you must work to achieve even the smallest of goals. It’s a test of faith and discipline. I always want to honor that in the ring. The kids and families deserve a fair and honest look. We as judges are also tasked with the responsibility of making sure those watching know what you think about their animals, but without making it about you and feeding our ego. I’m blessed to be able to sort and I know it. I want to honor God first and foremost when I hit the ring. Everything else falls into place with that mindset I have learned. I’m not going to please everyone, but that shouldn’t be the goal. Being true and honest is! SEVEN IF YOU COULD MEET AND HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON, WHO WOULD IT BE? Ultimately, I can’t wait to meet Jesus! But here on earth that dinner seat changes depending on the season of life I’m in. Right now, there’s two: an evangelist named Vodde Baucham and the late Dr. Harlan Richie. Vodde’s biblical knowledge and his manner of teaching it is on another level. It has furthered my passion for investigating the Bible. Dr. Richie influenced soo many things

A U G U

S T 20 25

ST

57

that we do now. His vision and God given skill to see livestock, develop trends and his boldness in staying disciplined to what he knew is pretty fascinating. EIGHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF JUDGING? I absolutely love to evaluate livestock! Trying to figure out why God designed a certain Skelton a certain way intrigues me. It’s easy to point out the flaws, but I’m most interested is studying why an animal is assembled like they are. Looking for the good and figuring out why it’s working is fun to do. I have to tell myself sometimes, “Hey, we can’t be here all day, we’ve got more classes to get to.” lol. NINE WHAT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? I’m an open book there’s not much I hide. I have a healthy, and I do mean healthy, fear of heights. I’m not made for mountains! Flying is not a problem but driving to elevated spots where the ground seems to disappear, and the drops are a little more aggressive, I’m not your guy there. TEN THIS IS WHY I SHOW... I try to do everything to honor Christ (I don’t always succeed) but that will always be my WHY!
