H ello, my name is Nic Reemtsma and I exhibited the Grand Champion Market heifer at the 2023 Iowa state fair this summer. I’m from Dewitt, Iowa and I’m currently a senior at Central Dewitt High School. I participate in school activities such as Football, Track, Baseball, FFA, 4-H, and FCA. My heifer that won was named Becky. She came from P.D. Miller out at M Lazy Heart Ranch. We took her to Badger Brawl in December where she won both rings of the market heifer division. We also took her to Iowa Beef Expo where she stood second in class. That moment there really was motivating for me because I knew she was better than second in class. So when summer time came around, that was always in my head that she was second in class. That kept me working throughout the summer – especially towards the end, that would always keep me motivated. My Dad is Dr. Phil Reemtsma and my mom is Angie Reemtsma (deceased). My dad is a veterinarian and
embryologist with his own practice (both a vet clinic and embryo center). His work has been very big for me, connection wise, as there are always big names coming in and out of there. It is really cool with the embryo center being able to meet a lot of new people - expanding our connections. We run roughly around 75 cows of mainly recips we put our genetics into. Recently, we raised the Reserve Champion Angus Female at the 2022 Angus Junior National shown by Carlee Clark. We mostly raise Angus, but we are starting to get into the club calf deal as we have all these leftover market heifers. I’m personally into the club calf deal, but my dad is into the maternal side of things - so the conversations get interesting when we AI cows lol. Looking back on state fair, I’d just like to say I’m beyond blessed to be put in that position. None of this would have been possible without my dad and the people that are the closest to me. That being said, I’m very grateful for the whole Miller family, Kinnick Paulsen, Ryan Olson and Carson Tobey. Looking back on this great
achievement, it took a lot of hard work to get there, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything as it taught me a lot of things. Not only did it teach me about feeding or working hair, but it also taught me about life - on how to never give up. Whatever is standing in the way of your success, just run right through it because anything is possible. All it takes is just to put your mind towards something, outwork everyone else, stay humble and just keep your head down, grind and hopefully one day your success will come. I mean, we have been working toward this since I started 4-H and to finally get it done is pretty unreal and I’m just beyond blessed. I am Showtimes. ■
