T here is one thing almost all livestock kids have in common, and that is having the dream of winning their state fair. While I’ve always hoped it would happen, I never really imagined I’d hear over the loudspeakers “Your grand champion market steer... Montgomery Bertram.” I have been showing livestock since I was 9 years old. I started with a market lamb project at the county fair in 2013. Fortunately for me my buyer donated my lamb back and that was the start of our sheep flock. The next year I was able to show a steer, I picked him out of the field and enjoyed every minute of getting him ready for the fair. As the years went by, we started traveling to state fair, jackpots, and eventually national shows. The first couple years of exhibiting at shows outside of my county fair, results consisted of last place or bottom of the class. While I had lots of fun showing and enjoyed being around friends and family, I yearned for the blue ribbons and recognition that accompanied the class win. I
