FALL 2023 I can’t believe it is already Fall! We just came off one of our busiest Summers with trips to the Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Colorado State Fairs! We had a wonderful time covering the shows, visiting with customers and seeing friends! We now shift to Fall and being the Official Media Partner of the 2023 American Royal! We will be in Kansas City with our full Showtimes Store and Booth! We are looking forward to a great show at the American Royal! The Sept/Oct 2023 Fall Edition is filled with photos we took during our State Fair run. Be sure to check out all of our Faces and Places throughout this issue! We’ve also included Show Results from the State Fairs! Mike Pallas is this issue’s Hall of Fame Inductee! We met Mike back in 2006 before we started The Showtimes! We were traveling to Ak-Sar-Ben when it was still in Omaha. We broke down on the way to the show and Mike was there to help us out. He is one of the kindest people we have met. You will learn so much about him in his feature starting on page 212! Every Sunday you might have noticed that we share a Bible verse on The Showtimes Facebook and Instagram pages. Almost ten years ago I was sitting in Church and the idea crossed my mind

that The Showtimes had a large following on social media and that it would be a way to share the Bible with many people in our industry. That Sunday I started taking photos on my phone along with inspiring scripture or a Bible verse from that Sunday’s sermon. Sometimes it was a photo I took in Colorado Springs, or the sun shining through the trees on the way to church. Now we share Bible verses on images we take at shows throughout the country that might not get published like an empty chute or a Hereford’s eye. It grew into something that I hope inspires exhibitors and everyone who reads it. When we were at the Indiana State Fair we were down on the floor covering the Grand Drives. During the Market Hog Show judge Josh Brockman gave a really great speech about how everything you do either glorifies God, or glorifies yourself. Be sure to read his full speech on page 117! We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2023 American Royal in KC this October! Good luck at the Fall Shows!

ONE WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY? I grew up in the hill country of Texas and started showing steers when I was old enough. I then started hauling Purebred cattle across the United States. My kids participated in the steer and lamb deal. TWO WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE YOU HAVE JUDGED? This is a tough one. One of the neatest things would be judging the Open Cattle the last year they had the Cow Palace out in California – with all the history. I have enjoyed all the majors like Denver, etc. THREE WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST… I have had the opportunity to judge some of the Junior breed shows at the Royal. The main thing I am looking forward to is getting to do this in honor of Stanley Stout (a former American Royal Board of Directors member and chairman of the Livestock Committee) and Bud Sloan (a former beef cattle superintendent and livestock superintendent for the American Royal). It is a special thing for me. The winner of the Supreme Champion Heifer will be awarded a $5,000 Stanley E. Stout Memorial Supreme Heifer Scholarship as well as be awarded the Bud Sloan Supreme Heifer Trophy. FOUR WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL HEIFER? The first thing anybody that knows me and what I look for will know I am going to be hunting a female. Starting at the ground, she has to be able to travel. I don’t worry about the freak fronts like some guys; but I am going to try to find the complete female of the group. FIVE MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU I like Western Art and Western Poetry like Baxter Black.

INGREDIENTS • 2 Cups All-Purpose Flour • 2 Teaspoons Baking Soda • ¼ Teaspoon Salt • 2 Tsp. Pumpkin Pie Spice Or Cinnamon • 1 ½ Cups White Sugar • 3 Large Eggs • ¾ Cup Buttermilk If You Don’t Have Use Regular Milk With One

Tbsp. Of Lemon Juice • ¾ Cup Vegetable Oil • 2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract • 2 Cups Shredded Carrots Freshly Shred Your Carrots Don’t Use Pre Shredded • 1 (8 oz.) Can Crushed Pineapple With Juice • 1 Cup Chopped Walnuts • 1 Cup Raisins

CAKE DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour three 9’’ round cake pans. 2. Sift flour, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice (or cinnamon) and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside. 3. Mix sugar, eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla together in a large bowl; gradually add flour mixture until just combined. 4. Combine shredded carrots, pineapple, walnuts, and raisins in a separate bowl; stir into cake batter using a large wooden spoon until combined. Pour batter into the prepared pan. 5. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, about 25-30. (Times vary depending on your oven) 6. Cool in pan for 5-10 min then on a rack till completely cool. 7. On a cake plate or serving tray, stack the cakes with a layer of frosting in-between the layers of cake. Frost however you would like! Store in fridge. 8. Enjoy!!!

FROSTING INGREDIENTS • 2 (8oz.) Blocks Cream Cheese Room Temperature • 1 Stick (½ Cup) Butter Room Temperature • 32 oz Cream Cheese • ½ tsp Almond Extract If You Don’t Have/Don’t Like You Can Omit • ½ Tsp Vanilla Extract

FROSTING DIRECTIONS 1. Using a hand or stand mixer, whip cream cheese and butter together until smooth and no lumps 2. Slowly start to add powdered sugar (Start with 1/2 the Sugar and add remaining to taste. I don’t like it being too sweet and don’t add all of it. It depends on your taste). 3. Add the extracts and store in the fridge till time to frost cake

This spring we decided we would plant a small garden. Libbi requested watermelons, Randy wanted to grow a prize- winning giant pumpkin, and my top priority was tomatoes. For the sake of tradition, we had to have zucchini and sweet corn. I felt like we got off to a great start and sure enough, a week after we planted the seeds, everything was sprouting. Checking the garden every day after we did chores became part of the routine. By June, the zucchini and tomatoes were producing, the corn was shoulder height and there were pumpkin and watermelon vines going everywhere. That was about the time our Texas heat kicked into high gear. Along with the heat, came the wind, the worms, and the grasshoppers. Despite all my effort, the grasshoppers and worms destroyed the sweet corn. Once the 114-degree days rolled around, the grasshoppers took over everything. Our prize- winning pumpkin that had grown a little larger than a basketball, just melted in the heat. We had zucchini and tomatoes for a little while before the grasshoppers managed to strip every leaf away. The best part about this project was knowing what we did wrong, and what we will do different next year. God probably feels like this when he looks at us and all the mistakes we make. Thankfully, He keeps forgiving us and giving us chance after chance to get things right. Jesus teaches us the story of the prodigal son, who foolishly spent his inheritance in Luke 15:17-25, “17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and

against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.” In this story, the son felt like he had messed his entire life up. He returned to his father knowing that he was the only one to blame. He felt unworthy of a second chance. Just as his father forgave him and celebrated his return, Jesus forgives us for our mistakes. Jesus gives us chance after chance to get it right. I will be prepared next year with shade cloth and grasshopper spray for my garden, and just like my garden, we are a work in progress. When we pray to God for forgiveness and the wisdom to make better choices, He loves us and guides us through it all. ■

M y name is Holden LeVan. I am a junior at Triad High School in North Lewisburg, OH. My family and I live on a farm near Woodstock, OH. My father is a veterinarian at Woodside Veterinary Hospital which my parent’s own and operate, and my mother is an Oncology Patient Care Nurse Manager. I have 3 older brothers and a set of older twin sisters. I have been in 4-H since I was 9 years old and have always shown livestock. I participate in FFA and play varsity basketball. I am a member of the National Honor Society. In my free time, I enjoy working on

the farm, fixing and building things, and helping with the cows as well as the racehorses. My family raises beef show cattle as well as Standardbred race horses that we also train and race. While it is every showman’s goal to win the Ohio State Fair Market Beef show, I never dreamed that I would be able to accomplish that. I’ve worked hard at trying to get to that point, and have spent countless hours in the barn, from early mornings to late nights . I’ve managed my projects from the time that they were baby calves to the end point of their show career. I wouldn’t be able to accomplish any of this without the help of my family and friends. My brother Hadley and my sister Frani helped me everyday they could, morning and evening, with my steer.

They made sure he was taken care of while I was at Angus Junior Nationals in Nebraska showing my heifer. My parents have always supported me in everything that I set out to do, and without them, this would not have been possible. My siblings have taught me what I needed to know to be successful with my steer and are always there for guidance. Hank, Harrison, Hadley, Cati, and Frani have all been a huge help to me, not only with my steer, but in life. I would like to thank the Boyert Family, the Watson Family, Nolan Furgeson, and everyone involved who helped Dale and I get to this point. Without good friends and family, exhibiting livestock successfully would not be possible. It feels surreal that my show season ended at the Ohio State Fair. I am very blessed to be part of the livestock industry and appreciate everything that I have learned along the way. Knowing that being able to show good quality beef cattle is an accomplishment and contributes to the improvement of the quality of livestock in this country makes me a better showman. The ultimate goal is to have a complete animal that will be successful in the show ring and be marketable. If there is one thing that I have learned from showing livestock, it is to accept constructive criticism and work hard. It has shown me the extent to which families come together for a common goal that makes it great. Working hard together, supporting each other, celebrating victories, and learning from losses is what makes families stronger. Winning the Ohio State Fair Market Beef Show was truly a dream come true, none of it would have been possible without the people behind the scenes who can't be thanked enough. There’s no other people I'd rather win at this level with. Dale was one of a kind and he is definitely a steer myself and many others are never gonna forget. ■

My steer, Goose was a special one not only his type but also his personality. We started the year off strong finishing fourth overall at Hoosier Beef Congress. Then we spent a lot of time together getting ready for the state fair hoping to finish strong. Our goal was to make it to the dirt (Grand Drive) and we did just that. Walking into the drive was awesome, but my favorite memory was the slap. It was a feeling like I've never had before. Saying goodbye to Goose was hard. We set our goals, worked hard and I was blessed to achieve Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair. I'd like to thank God for this opportunity. With him all things are possible. I would also like to thank my family, we are a team. 4-H takes hard work and dedication. My brother Reid and I spend our summers together working our 4-H animals, beef and swine. Awesome memories for sure. I would also like to thank the Guyer crew and my family and friends for their guidance and support.

M y name is Catelynn Hockemeyer and I exhibited the Reserve Grand Market steer at the Indiana State Fair along with the champion shropshire market lamb and the champion white face cross intermediate market lamb showman. This year was a huge accomplishment after all the hours in the barn working hair, walking bracing. we never dreamed this

could be accomplished. It was a wild ride with my steer, Revenge he kinda had a mind of his own but when he hit the ring he was a totally different animal. He was always a lot of fun to have around and probably one of my best friends. He was a fun steer to show and a fun steer to have around. 4-H was never just my effort, me and my family do this together and that is one of the best things I could ever ask for. It makes it a

lot more fun to have your biggest supporters in the barn helping you to be better and pushing you to make you better, Yeah at times me and my sister are biggest competitors but also best friends and biggest fans and supporters. This year probably would have never happened without all the people who helped down to the fitters, the people who raised, sold him, the people who kept me calm before show time my family and team is most of the reason I have accomplished so much. ■

I am only here to tell you about one thing. It was amazing that we started this event by thanking the only one that allows every breath that we take, to step in this building and every other building by giving Him thanks. We started by prayer to Him. It’s a Sunday. Even if it was Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, everything we do is either in worship to Him, or rebellion to Him. You think about everything that you do either glorifies God, or glorifies yourself. Christ told us deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow me. This event, this industry, this competition, this thing that we get to do, He has blessed us with. Indiana, he has belssed y’all with this amazing group here, this facility that is brand new, the one that Nick and I got to work through all these kids the past few days... that’s a blessing from God abaove. Take it and use it. This is an amazing industry that we can teach and grow and train our kids to do ethical things. To do hard working things. To learn responsibility. That is extremely good and extremely right and we can use that. A gentleman

earlier said; ‘we just use the pigs in this instance, or the cattle, or the sheep or the goats to raise our kids. Use them to raise your kids in Christ. To teach them about Christ. The hours that each of us get to spend with our family in the barn. All of that time how valuable is it when we’re all in tune together, in sync as a core family. Mold your family. Doing something that you enjoy... as a following people of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, take the advantage of the blessings that He gives in a relationship with Him... the only thing that matters is eternity. This pig show is a short time. He gives us every breath that we have. He can take it at any moment. He can bless us. Continue to worship Him in everything that we do. This is the most amazing platform that we can do to make our children understand that and grow in Him as well.
