Nov/Dec 2021 Year End Edition

meet the judge

FIVE //What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? That’s a tough question, I have been given a lot of great advice over the years. My dad always said, “It’s your name, make the best of it!” SIX //What is your most memorable judging experience? I have had several great experiences, however, the one that stands out is the 2020 National Western Steer Show. SEVEN // You are also involved in the Bucking Bull Industry. Howdid you get into that and howdoes it meshwith your cattle operation? The Bucking Bull industry has been really good to us. We began by buying a few top young bulls and some elite females, which began an extensive ET program. We have been fortunate to own several great bulls and fortunate to have owned most of their dams. Our bucking bull program would not be possible without our great friends at D&H Cattle Co. Our partners Dillon & HD Page are the best in the business and they manage all the bulls. We help them in marketing and sale productions. EIGHT //Who has been the biggest influence/mentor on your life? I have had several great mentors but my dad ranks number one.

ONE //What is your involvement in the livestock industry? I have been involved in the cattle business my entire life. I was raised on a ranch and began showing at nine years old. I currently own Buck Cattle Co. along with my wife Brenda and daughter Bailey. We raise Maine-Anjou, Herefords and Bucking Bulls. TWO //What inspired you to be a judge? I really never thought about being a judge until I was asked for the first time several years ago. THREE //What makes a good judge? I believe a person who has been involved in the industry and has experience feeding and selecting cattle for their operation has an advantage on evaluating cattle. You can learn a lot from failure and success. FOUR //What will be your approach to judging the Steer Show at the 2021 NAILE? I have watched the NAILE Steer Show numerous times over the years and I know the quality will be there. My approach is simple but challenging, find the steer that fits me the best. I will be looking for a market ready steer with muscle shape, body, sound structure, with balance and eye appeal.
