The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit organization raising funds to help preserve and improve the Iowa State Fairgrounds. An Iowa treasure, the Iowa State Fairgrounds is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Fair has gained international fame through the years. It plays a vital role in Iowa’s economy while upholding the link between Iowa’s work ethic, achievement and talent. The Fair is a tradition any Iowan can be proud of, and the Blue Ribbon Foundation is dedicated to continuing that legacy. Project Update: Improvement projects are in full swing across the Iowa State Fairgrounds, ensuring the cherished venue remains a welcoming and vibrant space for all. Crews work year- round on upgrades that range from modernizing facilities to preserving historic structures. These efforts aim to maintain the Fairgrounds’ unique charm while anticipating the needs of future generations. Thanks to the support of generous donors and the dedication of hardworking crews, these projects are transforming the Fairgrounds into an even more enjoyable destination for visitors from near and far. Variety Star Playground: This winter, crews surveyed the Fun Forest area for the new inclusive playground.
Existing equipment was removed, creating space for the new playground that will have an agricultural theme, complete with accessible ramp and a smooth, easy-to-navigate surface. It’s a space where children of all abilities and ages can play, encouraging physical activity, imagination, and friendship. Thank you to the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s partner, Variety the Children’s Charity of Iowa, for bringing this amazing addition to the Fairgrounds. This playground won’t be just for August – it will be a year-round destination for families, especially those on Des Moines' east side. Horse Barn: Phase one of the project (exterior painting, window replacement, masonry repairs, and north restroom renovation and construction) will occur prior to the 2025 Iowa State Fair. Phase two (concrete floor with radiant heat, relocated offices, interior wash rack area, portable stalls, fire suppression system and enhanced ventilation) will begin this fall and be completed in time for the 2026 Fair. The Blue Ribbon Foundation’s “Back the Barns” fundraising campaign offers a meaningful way for those passionate about supporting youth
in agriculture to contribute to this vital project. Ensuring top-quality facilities for exhibitors to compete and showcase their livestock each August is a key part of the Iowa State Fair’s mission. Join in this campaign to enhance the Fairgoer experience for generations to come. Members of the "Back the Barns" campaign are generous donors who commit $1,000 per year for three years to support the restoration of these iconic livestock barns. And yes—you’ll receive a special belt buckle as a token of appreciation for your investment in preserving the Fairgrounds. Supporting the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s unique fundraisers is a great way to make a meaningful impact while celebrating the spirit of the Iowa State Fair. Each campaign offers a special opportunity to contribute to the preservation and improvement of Fairgrounds’ facilities, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy this beloved tradition. Your support directly enhances the Fair experience for exhibitors, visitors, and the state of Iowa. Every contribution, big or small, helps keep the Fair’s legacy strong – thank you for making a difference! ●
