Jim Reid

KEEP YOUR EYES UP I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8

Our dad Jim Reid touched every working part of The Showtimes. He helped make every black Showtimes Banner that hang in barns across the country. He was the first to read every single issue and our biggest fan. There wouldn’t be The Showtimes without him. He will continue to inspire each issue of The Showtimes Magazine.

Kicking Off Summer!

LISA REID OWNER / EDITOR

One thing that is evident throughout this entire issue is the value of the Junior Programs in the livestock industry. Multiple operation’s advertisements do not highlight a sale or genetics but offer luck to those heading to Junior Nationals this Summer. Individuals highlighted throughout the magazine in special features used their platform to emphasize the importance of youth and the Junior Programs. As a family, it was our time spent traveling to shows, serving on the Maine- Anjou Junior Board and being active members of multiple breeds that solidified our connections within the industry that helped enable us to do what we do now as opening, this issue is anything and everything Junior Nationals! Don’t miss the Junior National Preview that highlights all of the various breeds Summer shows in one place - Judges, Junior Boards, logos and more. Check out our Meet the Judge special features where we interviewed Charlie marketers and publishers. If you couldn’t tell by that Boyd and Cody Sankey! Both will be judging at Junior Nationals this Summer!

The new Hall of Fame inductees are longtime supporters of the Maine and Simmental Junior Programs! Read all about them starting on page 177. This issue, however, does not begin and end with just Junior Nationals. It features some of the top genetics, sales and products the industry has to offer. Flip through the pages, market your calendars for the upcoming sales and get in contact with the various producers and companies that can help take your projects and operations to the next level! The days are getting hotter which means it’s time to hit the road for the Summer Junior Nationals! We have been busy working

on designs, backdrops,

banners and signs for multiple breed’s shows. We look forward to being the Official Media Partners of the ASJA National Classic in Madison, Wisconsin in July and seeing you at the other Junior Nationals over the next few weeks! ●

JUDGE CODY SANKEY ANSWERS TEN OF OUR QUESTIONS! HE...

U N E 20 25

ANSWERS CODY SANKEY IN

ST

41

FOUR WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I’ve judged reindeer in Alaska. Also, I’m a passionate softball and baseball coach. FIVE WHAT IS YOUR ROUTINE ON SHOW DAY WHEN YOU’RE JUDGING? I treat it like any other day—except I dress up to evaluate cattle instead of wearing my usual work clothes. SIX WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE? Life advice: Chase your dreams, work hard, and believe in yourself. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it. Nothing comes fast or easy—you have to put in the time, effort, and dedication. Cattle advice: Invest in quality over quantity. With today’s technology, you can produce a lot of cattle from just one or two great cows. SEVEN HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERFECT HEIFER/FEMALE? The perfect heifer is one that will become a great cow. I strive to find elite females I’d want in my pasture raising calves after their show career ends. Too often, we focus on things in the show ring that don’t matter once the halter comes off.

EIGHT WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?

I’m a fifth-generation cattleman and grew up on Sankey’s 6N Ranch in Council Grove, Kansas. Our family has the second-oldest Angus herd in the U.S., with over 125 years in the registered Angus business. I attended Butler County Community College and judged on the livestock team. I then transferred to Oklahoma State University, where I was on the 2001 National Champion livestock judging team. I earned a B.S. in Ani- mal Science and an M.S. in Ruminant Nutrition. After OSU, I worked at Michigan State University as the beef cowherd manager. Today, I’m the Senior Director of Beef Programs for GENEX Beef. NINE WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF JUNIOR SHOWS AND EVENTS IN OUR INDUSTRY? Junior shows have grown and evolved a lot since I was a kid, but the core values remain: they teach hard work, dedication, competition, and how to win and lose with grace. The best part of junior shows is the network of friends you make. Life is about the connections you build, and the junior show industry is un- matched in that regard. You meet peo- ple from all over the world and form a network few others can match. TEN THIS IS WHY I SHOW: Number one, I show because I love the time with friends and family. I’m not sure why we all work so hard on these “vacations,” but the memories I make with my family are what it’s all about. Whether I’m showing, judging, or watching my kids show, the way my heart races and the adrenaline rush of the grand drive is something that can’t be matched.

ONE WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO SORT THE OWNED HEREFROD FEMALES IN LOUISVILLE THIS SUMMER? It’s a great honor to judge the owned females at the JNHE. It’s one of the largest elite-level shows in the world, and to be asked to judge is a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity. TWO WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS A PERSON? Without a doubt, my parents. Their passion for their faith, family, and cattle is something I strive to follow. They raised us doing everything together as a family. We spent many miles in a pickup, traveling to shows over the years, and that’s why we’re still so close today. As far as mentors in the Hereford breed, Dr. David Hawkins from Michigan State University had the biggest impact. I was fortunate to learn from a Saddle & Sirloin member and livestock judging legend, and I’m forever grateful for that. THREE WHAT DRIVES YOU? I’m driven to be the best father, hus- band, and cattleman I can be. Outside of my family, my passion in life is cattle. Every day begins and ends with something cattle-related. I’m motivated to create the next generation of breeding cattle that are better than the last.

JEFF PAULSEN - PAULSEN CATTLE

New Skin has given us another magic wand in the tool box of hair care. It allows us to rejuvenate and save damaged or neglected hair but also allows us to get a quicker start on new hair

going into summer while giving us the basis of a healthy skin coat. We apply wet right away after rinsing and allow to set for 5 minutes while brushing in. New Skin is a revolutionary new product that we don’t go without.

The Blue Ribbon Foundation is a non-profit organization raising funds to help preserve and improve the Iowa State Fairgrounds. An Iowa treasure, the Iowa State Fairgrounds is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Fair has gained international fame through the years. It plays a vital role in Iowa’s economy while upholding the link between Iowa’s work ethic, achievement and talent. The Fair is a tradition any Iowan can be proud of, and the Blue Ribbon Foundation is dedicated to continuing that legacy. Project Update: Improvement projects are in full swing across the Iowa State Fairgrounds, ensuring the cherished venue remains a welcoming and vibrant space for all. Crews work year- round on upgrades that range from modernizing facilities to preserving historic structures. These efforts aim to maintain the Fairgrounds’ unique charm while anticipating the needs of future generations. Thanks to the support of generous donors and the dedication of hardworking crews, these projects are transforming the Fairgrounds into an even more enjoyable destination for visitors from near and far. Variety Star Playground: This winter, crews surveyed the Fun Forest area for the new inclusive playground.

Existing equipment was removed, creating space for the new playground that will have an agricultural theme, complete with accessible ramp and a smooth, easy-to-navigate surface. It’s a space where children of all abilities and ages can play, encouraging physical activity, imagination, and friendship. Thank you to the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s partner, Variety the Children’s Charity of Iowa, for bringing this amazing addition to the Fairgrounds. This playground won’t be just for August – it will be a year-round destination for families, especially those on Des Moines' east side. Horse Barn: Phase one of the project (exterior painting, window replacement, masonry repairs, and north restroom renovation and construction) will occur prior to the 2025 Iowa State Fair. Phase two (concrete floor with radiant heat, relocated offices, interior wash rack area, portable stalls, fire suppression system and enhanced ventilation) will begin this fall and be completed in time for the 2026 Fair. The Blue Ribbon Foundation’s “Back the Barns” fundraising campaign offers a meaningful way for those passionate about supporting youth

in agriculture to contribute to this vital project. Ensuring top-quality facilities for exhibitors to compete and showcase their livestock each August is a key part of the Iowa State Fair’s mission. Join in this campaign to enhance the Fairgoer experience for generations to come. Members of the "Back the Barns" campaign are generous donors who commit $1,000 per year for three years to support the restoration of these iconic livestock barns. And yes—you’ll receive a special belt buckle as a token of appreciation for your investment in preserving the Fairgrounds. Supporting the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s unique fundraisers is a great way to make a meaningful impact while celebrating the spirit of the Iowa State Fair. Each campaign offers a special opportunity to contribute to the preservation and improvement of Fairgrounds’ facilities, ensuring future generations can continue to enjoy this beloved tradition. Your support directly enhances the Fair experience for exhibitors, visitors, and the state of Iowa. Every contribution, big or small, helps keep the Fair’s legacy strong – thank you for making a difference! ●

Raising market animals has

involved in my church and the school’s varsity powerlifting team. I love hunting and fishing, and I am currently working to obtain my pilot’s license. Additionally, I enjoy working on the family farm and ranch in my spare time. This past show season has been such an amazing blessing to me and my family. To win a Texas Ma- jor was a dream come true – but to win two Majors back-to-back – that is more than I ever dreamed! Of course, this is not possible without the many hours of hard work, challenges, and the amazing support of our team – my entire family, Kyle Tarter, Kirby Eaves, Jaxon Blackshear, and so many others that truly wish the best for me. Luka, my Red Cross steer in Aus- tin, was a beautiful steer having

been a passion in my fam- ily for many generations. My grandfather, Larry Schickedanz, an ag teacher in the Texas Panhandle

during the 1960s and 70s, immersed himself in the cattle industry. Naturally, he instilled a deep respect for this way of living with my dad, who in turn en- couraged the love of agricul- ture and stock showing in me and my sisters. Steer showing is not only something I have devoted the past eight years of my life to, but agriculture as a whole, is an inte- gral part of my family’s way of life. My name is Jake Schickedanz, I am a 16 year-old sophomore at Perryton High School in Texas. In addition to showing steers and other ag projects, I am heavily

hair rivaling many Fort Worth calves, but we also knew he had immense potential as a slick calf. Walking into the Grand Drive at the Austin Rodeo, I was nervous, but knew Luka was special. When the judge slapped Luka as his Grand Champion, in a flash I realized that Luka and I had done it – we were the first Schickedanz’ to win a Texas Major! Only a few days later, we headed to Houston with, Kareem. We always had high hopes for Kareem, and he did not disappoint. A mere six days after winning Austin, we made our walk to the NRG Stadium for the Grand Drive, I tried to stay calm and just enjoy the moment. Our team knew the judge really liked Kareem, but did he like him enough? As I entered the arena in front of nearly 75,000 people, I was focused on keeping my overly anxious steer calm. It all happened so fast, I could hardly believe that I had just won Grand Champion at Houston – the largest Jr Livestock Show in the world, with the first all-black Grand Champion steer at Houston in over 20 years!

The past few years have been unforgettable for me and my sisters. About three years ago with the amazing mentorship of Kirby Eaves and Kyle Tarter, my younger sister, Sydney, won our first brand at Fort Worth. Since then, we have seen enormous success as a family, not only in Texas, but across the nation. We love traveling to the Arizona National Show, hanging banners in both the market and prospect shows. My older sister, Maddie, had an amazing senior year, finishing her career with the 2024 Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer in Houston. This past year, I have had many suc- cessful majors, including Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at the Amarillo Junior Classic and a Heavyweight exotic class winner at Fort Worth. Steer showing has taught me to have patience, how to win, how to lose, and ultimately the confidence to keep grinding and working

toward my goals, because: “winners never quit and quitters never win”. ●
