As Tate Crystal reflects, “The miles traveled, relationships built, and lessons learned through livestock judging are truly unforgettable. It’s a sport that prepares you for a life full of tough decisions and lasting memories.” This team’s journey is a testament to the power of mentorship and community. Carla Nemecek, who coaches the Southwind District team, has played an instrumental role in their development. With over 25 years of experience coaching successful teams, including her son Brody’s in 2019, Carla has cultivated a culture of excellence in Southeast Kansas. Brody, a former Southwind District 4-H member and standout at Kansas State University’s livestock judging program, brought his expertise full circle by coaching the All- Star Team to their Louisville victory. Southwind achieved an unprecedented milestone in 2024 by not only winning the Kansas 4-H State Livestock Judging Contest but also collaborating with other youth across the District to secure state championships in Meat Judging, Livestock Skillathon, and Livestock Quiz Bowl. Their collective efforts culminated in winning the State 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes,

marking the first time in Kansas history that a team has swept all four state contests—an extraordinary achievement that fills them with pride and cherished memories. These teammates share a bond forged through countless hours on the road, whether celebrating triumphs or learning from challenges. They will likely remain lifelong friends, united by their shared experiences and achievements. The legacy of the Southwind District Livestock Judging Team is built on a foundation of dedication, mentorship, and community support. From parents and volunteers to extension agents and FFA advisors, every contribution—no matter how small—has played a critical role in their success. Competing on an international stage, they were crowned champions at both the Royal Highland Show in Scotland and the Charleville Show in Ireland. The team continued their streak of excellence by winning the state contest again in 2024, qualifying to represent Kansas at the American Royal in October, where they earned Reserve National Champion honors.

At the state contest, Kyser, Reegan, and Tate also earned individual accolades and were among six youth invited to try out for the Kansas 4-H All-Star Team. After successfully earning their spots, they joined Marais des Cygnes District 4-H member Esmerelda Franklin to form a new team representing Kansas at the Louisville contest. In November, coached by Brody Nemecek, this All-Star Team achieved the ultimate honor—winning the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.
