YOUR #1 SOURCE FOR FALL PASTURE SALES!

The steer that started it all. Our first big win was the 2004 Colorado State Fair with my steer Buckeye. I can’t believe this August marks twenty years since that day. Not only would Buckeye become the logo of The Showtimes featured in the “O” as well as our shield, he would allow us to make the connections to what would lead to The Showtimes Magazine you are reading today. The steer came from Kirk Roecker/Kirk Stierwalt. Adam Pryor who was with us in Pueblo that year is an advertiser in this issue you are reading. One of our biggest competitors was the Vickland family. They are also an advertiser in this issue. It is really cool to see how people we met back then are still part of our life today! We would go on to win the Colorado State Fair Steer Show again in 2007 and 2010 as well as Reserve in 2009. Today, we are no longer showing steers but still use our competitive nature to bring you the best magazine possible. The August 2024 issue is one of our favorites to date and our largest of the year at 608 pages! Inside this issue you will find Show Results from all of the Junior Nationals! We’ve included Faces and Places from shows across the country including our trips to Springfield, MO and Tulsa, OK for Maine/Chi and Simmental Junior Nationals! We love to include our Beyond the Backdrop articles from exhibitors that win the shows. This issue

we’ve included more than ever with 15! The Showtimes Hall of Fame was established in 2009 to recognize the

many outstanding poeple and families in our industry. This issue we’re inducting Beth Ann McDermott and the Tlach Family. Congratulations to these outstanding members! We would like to thank every advertiser for making this issue what it is. The Showtimes wouldn’t be what it is without your continued support! We are getting ready to head out on our State Fair Tour! Look for us at the shows putting out magazines, taking photos and videoing the best State Fairs in the country! We hope you enjoy the August 2024 State Fair Edition of The Showtimes!

judge. In our minds the purpose of stock shows has always been to advertise our product as breeders, highlight the cattle industry and also train and promote ag youth. What we have learned from that for sure has an impact in how all of us that judge try to balance all these things and talk about then select our favorite animal. THREE What an exciting question! If we were going to build the perfect steer we would for sure begin the project from the ground up. He would have a well shaped and solid foot along with the structural integrity and flexibility to get out and strut his stuff around the show ring or the feedlot. Next we would have to talk about bone. There’s something about an animal that carries just a shot more bone that says durable, rugged and fun IF YOU COULD BUILD THE PERFECT STEER, WHAT WOULD HE LOOK LIKE?

ONE WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AT THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR? First and foremost, we are looking forward to working with the young people. In our minds the state of Illinois has always turned out incredible young people that have consistently become leaders in agriculture. Next would have to be the quality of cattle that we will evaluate. Again, Illinois has always had some of the best livestock in the industry. Especially when it comes to show cattle. TWO YOU BREED AND SHOW SOME OF THE TOP CATTLE IN THE INDUSTRY. HOW WILL WHAT YOU DO AT HOME INFLUENCE HOW YOU JUDGE THE ILLINOIS STATE FAIR? We both think that what has worked for us at home in terms of of major successes and failures evolves into life lessons that we learn from and that definitely spills over into our cattle selection decisions as we

to look at. After that we should probably talk about masculinity and muscle. We sure like a steer that’s wide based, big topped, good in their forerib, and that offers some real product in a way that is still eye appealing and attractive. With that being said, we have to talk about THE LOOK. That side view profile or that super cool 3/4 rear side view shot from 20 feet away is what gets us all! So to conclude or finish the build on our perfect steer, we would have to say that our perfect steer would have to have that cookie cutter outline that features some length and extension up through his front end along with length of side , some depth of rib, the other traits we have mentioned above and just and overall killer look! FOUR WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT JUDGING ALONGSIDE YOUR HUSBAND/WIFE? We have been married 28 years and for that length of time we have worked together almost everyday with cattle and it has been an absolute blessing to do so. Judging together at a show together with the caliber of livestock that also carries the prestige of the Illinois state fair is a blessing and a privilege for the both of us. At home it seems like our opinions always seem to compliment each other and that is something that also spills in to our cattle selection practices in and out of the ring. It’s always a blessings doing what you love with

your best friend. Nothing more rewarding! FIVE WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FAIR FOOD? Travis’ favorite food at every state fair would have to be the ribeye sandwiches at any state fair beef booth. For Beth it would most definitely be funnel cakes with extra powdered sugar! SIX WHERE DO YOU SEE THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IN TEN YEARS? We both see the livestock industry continuing to flourish ten years from now. Our reasoning for this is on a day to day basis we are blessed to see the quality of young people that rural America continues to churn out. These are young people that still share the core values of God, family, importance of honoring your commitments, and taking care of the land. It’s our belief that we still have not seen the greatest generation yet. It’s thrilling to think about the new ideas and practices that will continue to be adopted in the years to come. SEVEN DOES YOUR CHAMPION STEER HAVE TO BE A CERTAIN WEIGHT? Great question, but we are not about to get ourselves pushed in to a corner today! At the forefront of our decision making will be picking out highest quality, total package steer that we can find.

took us under their wing and really teach and mentor us along the way. Two people within the industry that had an enormous impact on who we are today would have to be Bill Couch and Jim Williams. Whether it was things about life, showing cattle, marketing cattle, or selecting cattle those two men have played a major role in where we are today and we appreciate them! TEN THIS IS WHY I SHOW... First and foremost, the people! We love our stock show family and even though we compete hard at times there is not another group of people anywhere that will be there for each other like our stock show family! Also there is nothing better than being around stock show youth. We love the young people! Secondly, it’s our life and our passion! We love the lifestyle. Working with animals, the outdoors, the travel, the people, etc. ●

EIGHT WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? To offer a little information about our past, Beth grew up in a little town called Stamping Ground, Kentucky. Her family were into raising and marketing Limousin cattle in a big way. Travis was born and raised where we currently reside near Fairview, OK. His family cattle operation consisted of registered Angus cattle. In 1998 we moved from Kentucky back to Oklahoma and took over the operation of our family ranch in Oklahoma. We have two great sons Bret 15 and Bryson 10 that contribute heavily to the day-to-day operations of Pembrook Cattle. One thing we would want people to know about us is that we attribute all of our successes in life to our Christian beliefs and our faith in God. We have been truly blessed to be able to make our living in the cattle industry! NINE WHO HAVE HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS PEOPLE? We would first have to say our parents. Our parents were so great at providing us so many opportunities as we grew up and most importantly giving us a firm foundation to live by. We have both also been blessed to have industry greats that

QUESTIONS THE SHOWTIMES

emphasizing the family experiences and community building that come with traveling and participating in shows, the industry can continue to thrive. So personally, I would like to see more people exposing the industry with their experiences and knowledge. TWO YOU HAVE VERY STRONG ROOTS IN THE AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW IT IMPACTS YOUR CURRENT INVOLVEMENT? It’s wonderful to have a deep-rooted connection to agriculture and how showing livestock has positively influenced my life. My journey from growing up on a farm where my family has row crops and almond trees to becoming a judge at livestock shows and now running a custom farming business with my family is truly inspiring. Raising my children in the agricultural environment and involving them in caring for cattle

ONE THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING. WHAT DIRECTION WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT GO? There are several ways to look at this question and avenues you can go down when answering but, the livestock show industry and its relationship with social media, I feel is a current evolving discussion. Social media has indeed provided a platform to showcase the hard work, successes, and advancements in genetics within the livestock world. It’s great to see kids’ achievements being celebrated and shared widely, which can inspire others and promote interest in the industry. It can educate those apart of it as well as on the outside. Focusing on the kids and the positive impact on families is crucial for the continued success and growth of the livestock show industry. By prioritizing the educational and developmental benefits for the youth and

AMANDA SCHNOOR ANSWERS OUR QUESTIONS! SHE WILL BE JUDGING THE 2024 WISCONSIN STATE FAIR STEER SHOW, IOWA STATE FAIR HEIFER SHOW AND COLORADO STATE FAIR STEER SHOW THIS SUMMER!

ANSWERS AMANDA SCHNOOR CA

can instill in them a strong work ethic, responsibility, and a love for farming. If they choose to pursue showing livestock in the future, they will have a solid foundation and valuable experience to guide them. As well as understand the importance of relationships, with the land, with people, with animals and with what they are passionate about. THREE WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS A PERSON? I have so many that have had a huge impact on my life. My first one is my entire family we challenged ourselves to be better and to never settle. Next is someone that I truly miss, Jarold Calhan. He was always one of the hardest critics and silent cheerleaders. He impacted my livestock pursuits in so many ways and made me want to be better… so to get his approval judging a show, that always made me want to be a respected evaluator of livestock.

I get excited. It’s a blessing that people still want my opinion on livestock and being able to stay in the mix, evaluate cattle, be around the industry and the people is important to me. SIX IF SOMEONE TOLD 18-YEAR-OLD AMANDA SCHNOOR THAT SHE WOULD ONE DAY BE JUDGING THE TOP CATTLE SHOWS IN THE COUNTRY, WHAT WOULD SHE SAY? I would say nothing because of disbelief and that’s because back then there weren’t many women judging shows and living on the west coast puts us at a disadvantage. Therefore 18-year-old me would blushingly laugh and now 18-year-old me should be really proud. SEVEN IF YOU COULD MEET AND HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON, WHO WOULD IT BE? Jesus. I would love to sit down and just thank him for the doors open, and the life he has blessed me with. The sacrifices he made

so I could live this life is immeasurable. EIGHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF JUDGING? Kids. Working with young people and seeing them do what they love makes me more excited to judge shows. NINE WHAT DO YOU EAT FOR BREAKFAST BEFORE YOU JUDGE? Coffee… I don’t eat, I just have a fancy coffee. TEN THIS IS WHY I SHOW.... Love for agriculture and kids. That one time I can talk to a kid in the ring for 20 seconds, I hope I can have an impact on their life like so many judges had on mine. The impact people can make not only on the industry but the world from the individuals in this line of work/passion/hobby whatever you want to call it, is unexplainable. ●

FOUR YOU ARE JUDGING STEERS AT WISCONSIN AND COLORADO AS WELL AS HEIFERS AT IOWA THIS SUMMER. HOW WILL YOU GET PREPARED TO JUDGE EACH SHOW? First of all, walking! You think chasing around three kids would do the trick but being physically and mentally in shape is important. But I think my biggest thing is being somewhat removed from the show aspect of the industry, I need to keep my mind fresh and evaluations true to my liking. I always try to keep to myself, not let the noise get in the way of what I like to do and why I like to do it. FIVE WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE JUDGING MOMENTS? Every time I am asked it’s humbling. The last 3 years I have had to say no or just couldn’t make it to judge because of having children. But, now anytime the phone rings for a show

THE SHOWTIMES WELCOMES BETH ANN McDERMOTT TO OUR HALL OF FAME! SHE IS A SHOW MOM, VOLUNTEER, LEADER AND VOICE OF THE IOWA STATE FAIR!

NEW MEMBER AUG 2024

My name is Beth Ann McDermott , and I grew up in the small southwest Iowa town of Treynor.

We lived on a farm outside of Treynor until I was around 11. My dad had passed away from cancer at that time and the farm became too much for myself, mom, and sister so we moved to town.

120

I became involved in 4-H in 3rd grade, and I showed cattle

and enjoyed refinishing furniture for fair. I had a love for Shorthorn cattle and a good friend, Roger Applegate with Brentwood Shorthorns, would sell me heifers and steers to show. After my father passed and we had to sell all of my shorthorn heifers, I wasn’t sure I would have the opportunity to show cattle anymore, but being from a small town and having close friends that were willing to help me, I was able to show until I graduated. They would let

me pick a steer out of their herd or I would find one at market price and then go to their farm everyday to work on my calf. I in turn would help put up hay, clean barns and grind feed. I really never had any intentions that I would win our county fair, I was just happy to still be able to show and decided I would set my sights on doing well in showmanship, which I did many times at county fair. While I was still in school I was asked by some other friends to show a purebred Chianina heifer named Connie from the Dale Werning family of South Dakota and traveled many miles with them and showing her in several different states. Upon graduation I entered nursing school and earned my RN degree but continued to work with youth and 4-H at my county fair. I helped on the beef committee and I would volunteer to judge record books. In 1990, I moved to Wiota, IA and joined the beef committee at the Cass County fair and became the first female to be on the committee. I remained on the committee until my oldest son was eligible to show. In 1992 I was asked to announce the 4-H beef shows at the Iowa State Fair and the rest of that is history as I am still doing what I love, but never dreamed I would become the voice of the Iowa State Fair!

I was a leader for my kids 4-H club for almost 15 years and served in different capacities as a leader. I would continue to help judge record books and volunteer at fair. All of my children were involved in FFA, something I knew of, but never had the opportunity to join as our school did not have an FFA program. In the early 2000’s our family began to host open Iowa Junior Beef Breed Cattle shows at our hometown Cass County fairgrounds and we are still currently holding this show – one of which is in memory of the kid’s grandpa- Wray McDermott. I try to help with anyone that wants to start having a show and share some of our successes as well as our failures. I never really feel like anything is a failure, but more of mistake that some are just bigger than others. I was always told that if you don’t make any mistakes how will you learn. Over the last 10 years I have also been helping on the committees for the Best in the Southwest Shootout, which I have now stepped down from, and the Best in the West Showdown that I am currently serving as Treasurer. These shows have given kids that maybe wouldn’t have considered going to state fair the opportunity, that if they won their county fair, another chance to show against other counties. Our showdown consist of 10 counties and then I

121

122

also help at the All Iowa Showdown where all the champions from their respective showdowns come to compete for the Best in Iowa in Beef, Swine, Goats and Sheep, both market and breeding. I have had the opportunity to work alongside so many people that I look up to as mentors, friends and they all become family to me. We care how each other’s families are doing and we support each other, no matter whose child placed better. My biggest influence has been announcing the Iowa State Fair 4-H Cattle shows.

The first year I was asked, I thought how hard can this be, I love to talk. I walked in not knowing what to expect and looked around that pavilion and thought I was going to be sick when they showed me the show order and all the names I was going to have to read and what if I messed up. I have learned that all I can do is my best and I have had many of families come to help me pronounce their name correctly and I do my best with phonics and I can still mess them up. You have to be able to laugh at yourself and only try you best each and every day. My three children were all involved in showing.
