Use our triple threat combo with your market steer or market heifer to maximize your show ring results during the last 100 days. Mega Champ ® is the ultimate cool-room feed for the summertime. Its combination of barley and spelts helps keep them fresh and full while maintaining an ideal finish over their ribs. Our Stress Tubs provide all of the vitamins/trace minerals they require, with an extra heap of potassium, to prevent shrinking under stress. Top it all off with Hair Magic Plus ® , our best resource for growing a healthy coat of hair for the show ring. HM+ is melatonin-free and safe for bred heifers!

KEEP YOUR EYES UP I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8

Our dad Jim Reid touched every working part of The Showtimes. He helped make every black Showtimes Banner that hang in barns across the country. Blackout Jackpot Nine

Spring is here! We are excited to bring you the 101st issue of The Showtimes Magazine! Our March/April 2025 Sire Edition is packed with Show Results from some of the top shows in the country including the National Western, Fort Worth, Cattlemen’s Congress and Blackout Jackpot 9! Plus, you will find the latest sires, a new Hall of Fame Member and upcoming Shows and Judges! Rodgers Bulls’ Trust & Obey is once again featured on the front cover! 2025 has been a very busy year so far! After our biggest Denver yet, we spent the

entire month of February focused on Blackout. Blackout Jackpot 9 was the biggest project we have ever worked on! The show was held in Loveland, Colorado and had 3 Prospect Shows as well as a Livestock Judging Contest and Combine! There was fire and neon, crazy videos and smoke and lights. We hope everyone who showed or judged had a great time! Thanks to everyone who supported our event and especially those who helped us put it on! We hope you enjoy reading this issue! Best of luck at the Spring Shows! ●

on the Shorthorn breed towards the end of their show careers. Following their graduation from college, Brian, Randy along with Tyler’s grandfather decided to try to make a living raising Purebred cattle. They purchased a few herds and several cattle within their means from respected breeders from across the country to establish their base. When Tyler started showing, he was not successful. Tyler explained, “We watched who was winning, what they were doing and did what they were doing.” From age 8 to 18, Cates Farms had no herdsman and was strictly family operated. Tyler focused on the show barn by himself. It was not until Tyler left for school that Cates Farms hired a herdsman. In 1993, Cates Farms raised the

bull Trump. According to Tyler, “Trump single handedly put us on the map.” Although they sold him to their neighbor for $7,800, they were allowed to use the bull themselves whenever they needed as their neighbor only had three cows. Trump’s influence on the genetics and success of Cates Farms was monumental. He has sired more National Champions than any other bull in the Shorthorn breed and has been Sire of the Year seven times. That same year, Tyler’s freshman year of College, the Cates exhibited their first National Champion in Louisville with CF Caramel 550. Following that win, success became synonymous with the Cates name for years to come. Although he originally planned to

When two people with strong passions join forces, good things happen. That is the case for Tyler and Cortney Cates. Tyler Cates is a third generation Shorthorn breeder. His grandfather, Rex Cates, started Cates Farm as a multi-diverse livestock and row crop farm in the late 70s. Tyler’s Dad, Brian Cates, and Uncle, Randy Cates, showed in 4-H and settled

head straight into the workforce with his family’s cattle operation, Jerry Douglas persuaded Tyler to attend college. The two shared an infatuation with cattle which created a bond between them. He attended NEO and then Purdue University. He was the assistant Livestock Judging Coach at Purdue for two years after his tenure on the team. Following college, Tyler went home to work for Cates Farms alongside his dad, uncle and grandfather. He did not officially join the partnership until after his grandfather passed away. Later, after the passing of his grandmother, Tyler and his wife Cortney bought out both his dad and uncle becoming the sole owner of Cates Farms. Cortney and Tyler come from two different backgrounds. Outside of her mom riding horses, Cortney had no agricultural background. Her involvement in 4-H stemmed from the influence of family friends. She started with chickens, then sheep and goats, pigs and finally cattle. When Cortney was in her early teens, she learned about the opportunities and scholarships available through the Angus breed. Cortney’s family asked questions, she watched whoever was good and she quickly become competitive within the breed. They established Sunrise Sunset Farm as they worked from sunup to sundown. What started as a herd of 15 show heifers has grown into what it currently is. From 2001-2002 Cortney served as Miss American Angus. What is a life changing accomplishment for any young Angus showman, it was even more so for Cortney being a first- generation Angus breeder. Out of the five cows Cortney had that same year, she exhibited the Reserve Champion Bred-and-Owned at Junior Nationals. One of Cates Farms’ donors “Abby” goes back to that same cow. In fact,

their daughter Piper is currently exhibiting a heifer that was Champion Bred-and-Owned at Louisville and Oklahoma City that is from that same family line. After finishing her college years at Towson University, Cortney worked as a High School Freshman and Sophomore History and Government teacher. When Cortney and Tyler got married, Cortney’s parents followed her to Indiana from Maryland to stay close as she was their only child. Today, Tyler and Cortney run both Cates Farms and Sunrise Sunset Farms. Cates Farms focuses on the Shorthorn breed while Sunrise Sunset Farms is Registered Angus. They run as few cattle as they possible can as they are limited on pasture ground being surrounded by corn and bean fields. They focus strictly on breeding heifers and do all IVF. Each year on Labor Day they hold their annual Star Search sale. Originally, Brian Cates, Tyler’s dad, would come up with a theme for their annual sale including everything from boxing to golf. When they finally landed on “Star Search” the name stuck One person who has been very influential to Cates Farms is John Sullivan. Right after meeting Tyler, he partnered with them on their bull CF Solution for above asking price. He became a top customer for Cates Farms and established a friendship that they have carried with them over

the years. Many people have gone on to find success for themselves who have worked for Cates Farms. From Tim Schaeffer to Jared Boyert. While they obviously had natural talent and skills of their own, the two things Tyler hopes they picked up from them was work ethic and how to treat people. “Outwork everyone and if you want to stay in business, treat people right.” The Cates family cares about their customers and is humbled to have influenced some of the top names in their respective breeds. “My favorite part is when I see people have success with their purchases. Seeing young people go on and be successful with cattle that they buy, that’s reassuring that you’re doing something right.” Tyler said. Everything at Cates Farms and Sunrise Sunset Farms was built from the ground up. As a family, Tyler and Cortney along with their daughter Piper have dedicated their lives to improving genetics in both the Shorthorn and Angus breeds. They are heavily involved in both breeds. Outside of work on their operation, Cortney along with Paige Arnold currently run the American Angus Auxiliary and Tyler can be found judging shows all across the country. Tyler and Cortney’s passion for cattle and the Agriculture industry is evident in the life they have built together. ●
