with my dad and learning how to take care of the cattle. Every year, I was given more and more responsibility. Over the years I experienced almost every position you could in a show. I’ve gotten the gate, been placed one out of the sale, won some classes and even a few breed champions. I have had steers that I had a close bond with and some that were harder to work with. I didn’t realize it at the time but some of the hard losses are what can inspire you to keep pushing. One of the hardest years I’ve had was 2020. I had a Santa Gertrudis named Chief and we had high hopes for him for Houston. We had a family friend named Caden working for us and we spent a

4H. My family lives just outside of town and I attend Wall High School. My family has strong roots in the agriculture industry and it has always been a part of my life. My grandfather Bob Benson was a county extension agent. He showed steers when he was young and passed on the tradition to his children. Some of my earliest memories are of going with my dad to look at cattle and going to stock shows to watch my cousins. When I was little, I dreamt of one day getting to show my own steers. I started showing when I was 8 years old. I learned so much that first year. My favorite steer that year was a black cross named

Captain. We had a bit of a hard start, landing one out of the sale spot in San Angelo and San Antonio. That year at Houston, I got to watch my best show buddy, Jett Hale win Reserve Grand Champion with his black cross. Jett and I have been friends, since we were born. Our dads grew up showing together and have been best friends ever since. Seeing him win was an awesome experience. I was so happy for my friend and it inspired me to keep trying. I took Captain to Austin a week later and he was named Champion Black Cross. That first year I developed an
