SULLIVAN SUPPLY ARE COMMITTED TO LIVESTOCK YOUTH!
What you do today will influence you tomorrow. This has been on my mind since my sister Laurie, and I were asked to speak to the Junior Boards at this year’s Youth Beef Industry Council (YBIC) in April. As past board members ourselves, it was interesting to look back and realize how people we networked with as a part of Junior Breed Associations have been instrumental in our lives and our company over the years. The influence of Junior Nationals and Junior Breed Associations is not unique to just us. This fact directly correlates to the importance of this Junior National Edition. Every year we incorporate an in-depth Junior National Preview that includes everything from show schedules and logos to Junior Board members and interesting facts about the breeds. You can find this year’s preview starting on page 152. For the first time ever, we have given side-by-side information for all the breeds! One of my favorite aspects of each issue of The Showtimes is the inductee of our newest Hall of Fame members. This month’s inductees gained their love for beef cattle through the Limousin and Maine-Anjou Junior Programs. They have used their talents and competitive natures to change the industry. Read their exclusive article starting on page 72.
While this issue is drenched with information and features highlighting the various breeds leading up to Summer shows, it would not be The Showtimes if we didn’t offer advertisements for the best of the best
in the livestock industry. From Sullivan Supply on the cover to Caffee Ranch on the back cover and everything in between – this issue features the top genetics, sales, products, and services. Use the magazine as a tool to make the best decisions for your life. Consequences are a part of everyday life. What you decide to do today will influence if those consequences are good or bad tomorrow. If you work hard, make smart decisions, and surround yourself with people who make you better, you will look back ten years from now and smile. We look forward to seeing you all this Summer as we travel to the Junior Nationals and gear up for our State Fair

BACK THE BARNS IOWA STATE FAIR BLUE RIBBON FOUNDATION FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
The Iowa State Fair livestock barns are undergoing a major $25 million renovation. Each structure will have dedicated restoration in areas that are vitally needed such as roofing, flooring, electrical, restrooms and tuckpointing. The Blue Ribbon Foundation created the “Back the Barns” campaign as a way for anyone with a passion for youth in agriculture to support the renovation project. Providing youth with exceptional facilities in which to compete and showcase their hard work and skills is central to the Fair’s mission. Members of the “Back the Barns” campaign are those generous donors who have pledged $1,000 per year for three years. You'll even receive a special Iowa State Fair belt buckle to commemorate your investment. It’s a mutual support program – we’ll help hold up your pants; you'll help hold up our roof.

FROM THE SHOW RING TO THE NFL
Football has always been my passion, but I would not be in the position that I am in without the things that I learned from showing cattle. The work ethic, discipline, and dedication that I put into football was learned at a young age in the show barn. As much as I didn’t want to do it, it taught me that there is a process to achieving your dreams. It’s working every day, even after you lose one, or things did not go your way. It is about getting up and going back
to work to be better so you are ready for when you have the opportunity. Seeing my family’s passion for wanting to better themselves in the cattle industry and continuing to grow and learn little by little, made me believe that I could do that with something that I love. And once you put belief in yourself with a drive to continue to get better, you can do anything you want.

NAIA » D1 Walk-On » NFL Free Agent Deal Ben Nikkel of McPherson HS has quite the story and is the ultimate underdog. He had minimal interest from colleges out of high school after registering 31 tackles as a senior DB, earning all league honors. He enrolled at NAIA McPherson College in his hometown where he excelled as a WR from 2018-2020. He compiled 107 receptions for 1,570 yards for the Bulldogs in his career, twice earning all conference. In 2021, he decided to join Iowa State as a walk on where he was redshirted. In 2022 he primarily played on special teams. In 2023 he was awarded a scholarship and became a team captain, registering over 40 tackles as a defensive back for the Cyclones. His standout season and pro day testing ultimately got him a free agent deal with the Washington Commanders. Nikkel graded out with a 4.45 40, 39.5” vertical, and 11’4” broad jump at 6’2” 199 pounds. Incredible consistency, improvement as a player and resilience shown.

THE SHOWTIMES WELCOMES RYAN AND SAM JOHNSON TO OUR HALL OF FAME! LISA VISITED WITH RJ ON THE HISTORY OF RJ CATTLE CO. AND WHAT MADE THEM BECOME ONE OF THE LEADING BRANDS IN OUR INDUSTRY.
Dad had Purebred Limousin cattle. He grew up through that Junior Association and was a member of the North American Limousin Junior Association Board of Directors. “The Junior National Program got us [he and Sam] both hooked.” Ryan claimed. While Ryan was focused on Limousins, Sam developed her love for beef cattle through the Maine-Anjou Association. Growing up in Indiana, she attended her first National Junior Maine-Anjou Show in 2001 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Her family worked with top names in the Maine- Anjou breed such as Fred DeRouchey and Bushy Park Farms as well as being actively involved with Registered Jersey cattle. After graduating from South Dakota State University in 2007 and following a short stint at Linhart Limousin in Southern Iowa for three and a half years, Ryan moved back to South Dakota in 2011. South Dakota had felt like home since college. He worked part-time for Werning Cattle Company as well as a few others clipping and freelancing. In 2012, he hosted his first online sale and was then invited by his childhood friend, Cory Altena, to use his show barn and sale
facility in northwest Iowa - which he did from 2012 to 2014. Fate so had it that within weeks of purchasing the property that is now home to RJ Cattle Co. in Mitchell, South Dakota in August of 2014, Sam would be heading out to work Fall sale cattle for Bushy Park Farms. After Ryan and Sam’s paths crossed that Fall, the two started dating
bunch of cattle and re-trade them. If someone trusted me with their calves, I took them and sold them on splits. That’s how I got started. I took them home. I broke them. I clipped them and presented them to the best of my ability and tried to sell them as good as I could. I would help the new owner and try to get them as many wins as was
yan (RJ) and Samantha (Sam) Johnson have put their brand on the livestock industry since they started RJ Cattle Co. back in 2015. Looking at them today and seeing the champions they are tied to on a national level, one would think they are a generational operation. While both have roots in cattle, it’s what the two of them created when they joined forces that will make a lasting impact on cattle genetics and the show industry. Ryan grew up in Northwest Iowa. His first memory of anything to do with cattle was going with his dad to the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa. His dad would take a weaned calf that was tame enough for him to show in the small open class. Ryan attended his first National Junior Limousin Show in 1993 in St. Paul, Minnesota at the age of eight. It was there where he has his first vivid memory of having a lot of fun with kids his age. Both Ryan’s Grandfather and

in 2015. That same year, they hosted their first sale. RJ Cattle Co. was officially in business! There’s no question that Ryan has an eye for cattle. Everything at RJ Cattle Co. was built from the ground up by Ryan and Sam. “I went around and took calves on commission for guys that maybe didn’t have a sale at that time. I couldn’t afford to buy a
possible for that animal. It built from there. I would save my money as much as I could and over the years kept going and going like that. Selling calves on commission. It has come to the point now where when we see a female that we really fall in love with, we want to buy her and own her. We are to the point where we are flushing several females every few weeks and putting in
some of the best co-op herds in the country. We are a little unique where we do not calve out any recips ourselves. We send all our embryos to several different co-op herds and buy our calves back on calf buyback programs.” Ryan explained. Ryan attributes their competitive nature as being responsible for the success they have achieved. He always wants to be better each day and every year. “There are people who are equivalent, but nobody who wants it more than we do. We always want to do better and look for ways to improve. Our willingness and wanting to win has contributed to our success.” Pinpointing one special win that separates itself from the others for Ryan and Sam is difficult. Each win means something. Their first big win came in the Summer of 2013 where they had the Grand Champion Purebred Simmental Female at the AJSA National Classic. They followed that with a win at the 2013 Indiana State Fair and next the 2015 South Dakota State Fair. They were just the beginning. RJ Cattle Co. has found itself at the backdrop year-after-year with multiple State Fair and National Champions. In 2019 they had the Supreme Champion Female in Louisville. Just last Summer at Junior Nationals they were a part of the Grand Champion Charolais Composite Female, Grand Champion Chi Composite Female and Grand Champion % Simmental Female. They ended 2023 with an exclamation mark having Sara Sullivan’s American Royal Supreme Champion Female who went on to win Supreme Champion Female in the Louisville Open Show.
several hundred embryos every year. It’s come full circle where we have a lot of younger guys that come to us, and we send calves out on commission. These kids are very talented and do a very good job. We love sending some of our calves out on commission to them just like we did when we were younger.” Ryan and Sam do not limit themselves to one breed or type of cattle. While the Simmental breed has been very good to them, they strive for quality and always want to be cutting edge – no matter the breed. They raise a lot of reverse sort males for club calves and reverse sort females of different breeds – Simmental, Angus, Charolais, Maines, Chis, and ½ Blood Simmentals.
They recognize that genetics and industry trends are constantly evolving, and they never want to get left behind just because that is the way things have always been. Ryan is willing to put in the miles to ensure they always have new and fresh genetics. “I’m the type of person that always wants to get in the car and go to a lot of shows and see what’s winning and other people’s genetics. My goal for the future is to never get left behind. Not just stay at home and look at my own stuff all the time. I want to stay current and always try to stay with the times.” One distinct aspect of RJ Cattle Co. is that they rely 100% on co-op herds. “We are so thankful to have
74
The drive and desire to win is in Ryan’s blood, but he always tries to put things into perspective for the kids he works with. “I try to tell kids, and I have to remind myself this, because you get so spoiled when you win big shows. I remember when I was a kid we didn’t get to travel around much. If I went to the Iowa Beef Expo or Sioux Falls and would have gotten off the bottom of a class or stood in the middle of the class, that would have been a big deal. Now, I go to the show, and I’m upset if we don’t win. I have to remind kids that with just winning your class or getting a piece of the breed, you should be happy for yourself instead of frustrated.” This past year, Ryan and Sam welcomed their son, Rhett. “Having a little boy has definitely changed us for the better. It is very, very special.” As a family, they are dynamite. Through their willingness to work hard and a clear vision for what they want to achieve, the Johnson’s continue to excel and raise the bar for this industry. ●
