Farm owner John Elliot and his staff were eager to share about their operation and in particular one of their herd sires, Nichol’s Expectation. The bull’s name instantly grabbed our attention as anyone involved with cattle, and especially from the state of Iowa, might recognize it. Elliot went on to tell us about his own travels to the United States, and to the state of Iowa, where the bull was purchased from the well known Nichols family. Today, with the combination of data collected from Expectation’s offspring and Rawburn’s Growsafe system, Nichols Expectation is considered the top Angus bull in Great Britain and his genetics are being utilized to improve feed efficiency, growth rates, and the Angus breed as a whole across the country.
To see genetics not only from the United States but the state of Iowa thriving in another country was incredible. It was fascinating to see just how connected agriculture is on a global scale. In our excitement, we continued to ask about more Angus producers from the United States and found additional connections to Rawburn. None of us expected to find a piece of Iowa four-thousand miles from home. Grace Noble is the owner of Aberdeenshire Highland Beef located in Northern Scotland.
