Jim Reid

KEEP YOUR EYES UP I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Psalm 16:8

Our dad Jim Reid touched every working part of The Showtimes. He helped make every black Showtimes Banner that hang in barns across the country. He was the first to read every single issue and our biggest fan. There wouldn’t be The Showtimes without him. He will continue to inspire each issue of The Showtimes Magazine.

Be the Light

LISA REID OWNER / EDITOR

the greatest people and genetics the world has to offer. From our newest Hall of Fame member to Champion exhibitors from the State Fairs, highlighting people who have worked hard and found success or influenced others positively is always one of my favorite aspects of the job. There have been a lot of hard and emotional things to deal with this past year. Personally, I lost my dad, a big part of my life and The Showtimes, last year; and then recently Travis Pembrook, one of my closest friends in the industry. Other losses such as Troy Thomas landed a heavy blow on our industry. It’s easy to look at the world around you and dial in on the bad. In times like these, however, I think about a song I learned when I was younger with the lyrics, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine!” When God puts

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Matthew 5:14-16 In the weeks leading up to going to print with this Fall issue, I have been hearing references of “being the light” on repeat. How you live your life matters. This goes towards how you do business, how you compete and how you interact with people on a day-to-day basis. What people often remember is not what you accomplished, but how you conducted yourself in various situations. Do you win a show and gloat, or do you humble yourself and recognize the hard efforts of your competitors? Do you put blame on others when something doesn’t go your way, or do you trust in the Lord’s plan for your life? Each day there are 1,440 minutes of opportunity for you to add purpose to your life. When how you live shines bright, it lightens up everything around you. You alone can be the reason for other people’s good days and better futures. This issue is filled with some of

something on your heart, I have learned it best not to ignore it. Chose to use your light with boldness. ●

TRAVIS PEMBROOK 1974 - 2025 There are certain people that come into your life that make a big impact. Travis Pembrook was a phenomenal cattleman – raising and selling some of the highest quality cattle in the industry. He was an honorable evaluator – judging the most reputable shows in the country. But above all else, he was a man who loved God and lived a life that honored Him through his works. While it has been one of our greatest honors being able to work with Travis, Beth and their family on their marketing and graphics; it was our conversations about faith, family and life that made it such a special friendship. When we lost our dad last year, Travis and Beth prayed with us and comforted us. My last conversation with Travis was on August 14th and he told me that keeping God at the center of my life was key. Our relationship with Jesus is the most important thing. Passions are a gift, and you should do everything to the best of your ability; but you should use

NEW HOODIES

TROY THOMAS 1962 - 2025

In August, the livestock industry suffered the loss of Troy Thomas. Troy alongside his wife, VeaBea, and family, owned Thomas Ranch located in South Dakota. Troy was honored throughout his life for his contributions to the cattle industry. He was named Charolais Herdsman of the Year and was invited to judge some of the most prestigious cattle shows across North America. Troy also dedicated countless hours to local and national boards including the American International Charolais Association, SD Angus Association, Black Hills Stock Show, SD Beef Breeds, and Farm Services of America.

your skills in a manner that honors the Lord. Knowing and having a relationship with Jesus Christ is bigger than any banner, high seller or accolade. We take comfort in knowing that Travis is with our Savior. We will hold the Pembrook family close to our hearts in the days ahead. When we think of Travis and his legacy, it was his relationship with God, his love for Beth, Bret & Bryson and how he treated people that we will remember the most – his cattle were a bonus!

Beyond his achievements, Troy’s true impact was found in the lives he touched. A mentor to many, he poured time, knowledge, and heart into helping the next generation—whether they were Thomas Ranch herdsmen, juniors spending time on the ranch, or young producers

just getting started. His encouragement, guidance, and belief in others shaped countless lives and careers in the cattle world and beyond.

Troy leaves behind a legacy built not just in cattle but in character, kindness, and community. He will be missed beyond words and remembered with love, respect, and deep gratitude by all who knew him.

THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING. WHAT DIRECTION WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IT GO?

and I am thankful for all that they continue to do for myself and my 3 younger sisters. Obviously, my immediate family allows me to take a day or two away from home to do the things I enjoy. My wife, Kandi, has been the best part of my life for the past 40 years, and our two sons and their wives have made my life more complete. But none of this happens without the guidance of our Savior and each day I find it necessary to thank the Lord for all that He has given me. SHILO My dad has always been the epitome of success, not just in his career as a professor and achievements as Kansas State’s livestock judging coach, but in every aspect of his life. His relentless work ethic and drive have always pushed him to achieve greatness, and he’s shown me throughout the years that with enough dedication (and a little luck), anything is possible. What I admire most is his ambition never came at the expense of his values; always prioritizing integrity and authenticity, proving that you can be successful without compromising who you are. Seeing him balance his professional achievements with his commitment to his family has been incredibly inspiring, and he’s truly shaped my understanding of what it means to live a fulfilling life. YOU ARE A NEW FATHER; WILL YOU ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS OF RAISING AND EXHIBITING CATTLE? SHILO Yes, my wife and I would love our son to be as passionate about the industry as we are. But we will be supportive in whatever avenue of hobby he chooses to take. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM EXHIBITING CATTLE? SHILO My favorite memory from exhibiting cattle is the final drive

SCOTT Dr. Don Good told me some 40 years ago that the pendulum continues to swing and never stops in the middle and within that time frame I have seen a number of trends come and go. From the small belt buckle cattle of the 60's to large giants of the early 80's. Because of science and technology, we are able to make changes at a far more rapid pace than we did prior to the late1900's. Some changes were based off consumer demands, like carcass quality. Others were necessary for producers to stay in business and be able to cover their financial bottom line. Regardless, changes will always occur, but at the end of the day our product needs to be safe, wholesome, affordable and most importantly sustainable. We will continue to compete with other countries who can raise feed and muscle protein cheaper than us. However, some of those countries are unable to match our quality and product safety and as a result we will remain a major contributor to the global markets. THE AMERICAN ROYAL IS THE OLDEST LIVESTOCK SHOW IN THE COUNTRY. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO JUDGE THE STEER SHOW THERE THE FINAL YEAR IN WEST BOTTOMS BEFORE IT MOVES TO ITS NEW HOME ALONGSIDE YOUR SON/DAD? SCOTT Bittersweet. As a kid showing in the old building prior to Kemper arena and West Bottoms I can honestly say the nostalgic feel of the KC stockyards with carloads of cattle and an old dingy livestock barn that leaked gallons of water down the cattle isles upon a melting snow is something that I will never forget. It's a great problem when the American Royal has outgrown the current facility and the community is willing to build a bigger, and better, equipped structure. Both of our sons will play active role in this year's American Royal. My oldest son Shane serves as the livestock superintendent and has helped a number of exhibitors and their families get situated into their designated stalls. He loves people, is a problem solver and wants to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience at the American Royal. I've lost count on the number of show moms thanking me for his help getting their trailer parked and unloaded. There’s no bigger thrill in the world for a dad to have one of his children help sort the livestock at a prestigious show like the American Royal. Our youngest son, Shilo, and I have judged a few shows together and he is a nice compliment to my needs. I'm a big picture, first impression judge; and Shilo sees the big picture, like me, but can also dig into the fine details that can make a difference in the end. We always end up liking the same ones but it's really nice to have verification from someone who you highly respect. SHILO Evaluating livestock is something my dad and I do on a day-to-day basis whether that be over the phone, after a show or out in the pasture; to be asked to share our opinion at a national level is truly an honor in itself. In addition, standing in Kemper Arena to sort the market steer show for the last year of this prestigious show in its current location is the cherry on top. I don’t think the

S E P T / O

magnitude of this honor will set in until we slap the champion. WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS A PERSON?

SCOTT My parents are the first to thank. Like all farm families, we were taught at a very young age that hard work, integrity and treating people with respect were key ingredients to life. We are all a result of our genetics and environment,

ST

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE JUDGING MOMENTS? SCOTT Every judging experience is memorable and perhaps not one better than another. I take the job seriously and I try to make it a fun, educational activity for the young people who are showing. I still today enjoy a county fair as much as any major show that I have judged. For me personally it was the county fair that gave me the tools that I still use today while judging a show. Every kid deserves a fair evaluation of their animal and an accurate description of the things I feel are good and need improvements. I learned a long time ago we don't all like the same kind. WHEN YOU ARE NOT JUDGING, WHAT DO YOU DO? SHILO My family and I currently reside in Garden City, Kansas. My

on the green carpet at The National Western Steer Show and the opportunity to present my steer at the famous Brown Palace. WHAT IS THE VALUE OF RAISING KIDS IN THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY? SCOTT I could spend days trying to describe all of the life lessons that we are taught in Agriculture. My parents still laugh about the parent-teacher conference they had with my first- grade teacher. She was reading a book to the class, and the word "scour" was used when describing a mother washing dishes. She asked the class if anyone knew what that word meant and of course the brilliant student I was replied... "Yes, runny poop from a baby calf." She had a hard time convincing me she was right, and I was wrong. The moral of the story is simple. We are taught at a young age about life, the importance of

work ethic, honesty, contributing to mankind, helping neighbors, respecting others, responsibility and dealing with adversity. The list of traits and experiences that we take into adulthood are many and eventually contribute to a successful career. I would not trade my life in agriculture for anything. WHAT EVENTS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR LIFE THE MOST? SHILO Becoming a father has completely changed my world. Life and legacy have more meaning and I’m excited to instill the same values and create a lifelong, impactful relationship with him that my dad created with me. This experience, becoming a father, while demanding, has proven to be exceptionally fulfilling, instilling a depth of purpose that you never truly understand until you experience it for yourself.

job as a cattle buyer for National Beef brought us to the southwest corner of the state – I am blessed to say I am truly passionate about what I do. Beyond my career, we spend a lot of time travelling home to the ranch in Manhattan to help manage our family’s cow/calf operation, going to various livestock shows, and clipping in preparation for the next show or sale. In the time remaining, I enjoy studying up on Kansas State sports and a round of golf here and there. IF YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE YET TO DO, WHAT WOULD IT BE? SCOTT I've been very fortunate to do a lot of great things in life. The 300 plus students that allowed me to travel up and down the road, looking at livestock, competing in contests and watching them achieving personal goals are something that I will always cherish. Today those former students are the who's-who of their careers and they continue to make me very proud. I wish I still had the energy to do it again because I miss the friendships that are gained on judging teams. I still have a bucket list, including a couple state fairs yet to judge, and continue to generate better Simmental genetics. My life has been complete! IF YOU COULD MEET AND HAVE DINNER WITH ANY PERSON, WHO WOULD IT BE? SCOTT I'll take a steak dinner with

family and friends. Wouldn't feel very comfortable around dignitaries or famous folks! SHILO If I could have dinner with anyone, it would be Kansas State Basketball Head Coach, Jerome Tang. I deeply respect his faith and character, ability to cultivate teamwork, and his positive influence both on and off the court. Engaging in conversation with him would be an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into his leadership philosophy, strategies for fostering team cohesion, and his broader perspectives on life. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF JUDGING? SCOTT I still love the hunt! The challenge of finding the best one! I've often times said in the ring, "Every class that walks in is like Christmas morning for a kid... can't wait to see what's in the package!" Selecting the Grand at the local county fair or 2025 American Royal still gives me goose bumps. It's the thrill and excitement that I get to share with the family who wins. Truly special. WHAT IS SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU? SCOTT One of my 4-H projects years ago included raising pumpkins. My sisters and I sold pumpkins along a blacktop highway and made $800 the first year. That half acre project has

turned into a 30-acre family business that has been a tradition for local families the past 50 years to pick their favorite pumpkin right off the vine. As kids this was never part of our business plan! SHILO One thing people generally do not know about me is that I showed many different species growing up – cattle, sheep, hogs and goats. Fun fact: I exhibited the Grand Champion Market Lamb at Arizona National Livestock Show in 2015. THIS IS WHY I SHOW... SCOTT I don't show anymore because it's hard on my body. However, we continue support our young people showing because all the life lessons, long lasting friendships and personal skills that are developed through the showring. SHILO If you know me, you know I am competitive to my core. This is a large part of what has driven my success in the past and now to keep achieving for own operation in the ring and beyond. And although it has been said repeatedly, it’s the people keep me coming back. My most valued relationships have formed on the foundation of the livestock industry. Strangers become friends that turn into family. These friendships are invaluable and I will appreciate them beyond the years in the show ring.
