RODGERS BULLS ARE FEATURED ON OUR NEW COVER! CHECK OUT HIS FULL LINEUP OF SIRES AT RODGERSCATTLECO.COM

ur This is Why we Show series was a highlight for us in 2023. We sat down with Dan Hoge at the Illinois State Fair, Bob May at The Colorado State Fair, Patty Vickland at her home in Loveland,

Horn showing her first heifer there. It was fun seeing Harper in the ring at the American Royal judging her first show with Mark Ebeling selecting the Supreme Heifer. Watching Jarold Callahan and his son Ryan judge at Angus

Colorado, Mark Ebeling at the American Royal, Dave Duello at his Ranch in Pine Bluff, Wyoming, and last but not least, Ken and Clayton Frye at their home in Johnstown, Colorado. It is a privilege to be able to visit with industry greats and get to hear more about where they started and where they are going. The one thing they all have in common is their passion for the cattle industry. If you haven’t been able to watch these videos, you can find them on The Showtimes Facebook page. It is worthwhile to take a few minutes to sit down and learn what made each one of them successful. Stayed tuned for the next videos in the series. You won’t be disappointed. We were fortunate to attend so many shows this year. It was entertaining witnessing the wrestling match between Bob May and Kent Jaecke during Main/ Chi Jr. Nationals in Grand Island (Bob May Pinned him :) as well as Harper

Jr. Nationals is a moment to remember. We get to see the highs and the lows of showing, but most importantly we get to see how talented these kids are in and out of the showring while watching them grow into leaders in our industry. Most recently, The Showtimes had the opportunity to give the first inside look of the new Sue Anschutz/Rodgers Livestock Center currently under construction at The National Western Complex. We are blessed to work with great cattleman, photographers, show officials, and exhibitors. Best wishes for a great 2024!

Jeremy and Andrea Clark were raised in similar backgrounds, Jeremy on a commercial cow- calf operation in central Arkansas that was Simbrah influenced, and Andrea on a cattle backgrounding and row crop operation in western Arkansas. Jeremy began showing in 1989. Although Jeremy’s parents and grandparents were implementing AI at the time, the cattle they produced were neither seedstock nor show cattle oriented. His first heifer was a Simmental by Megahertz, and he continued to show various breeds of heifers and steers throughout his

4-H and FFA career. He attended two breed Junior Nationals: Limousin and Gelbvieh. Andrea began showing steers in 1983, continuing to show them throughout her FFA and 4-H careers. Andrea’s steers were purchased in Oklahoma from guys like Steve Pixler, Jeff McPeak, Shane Kennent, and Matt Fuss. Jeremy and Andrea met through livestock judging because their Ag teachers were college roommates and roping partners. They would work out together before the contests. Although Jeremy and Andrea didn’t

know each other well they coincidentally have the same big goal, they both wanted to win the Arkansas State Fair Steer Show. Although they never reached that goal, Jeremy’s highest accomplishment was winning the Arkansas State Fair Commercial Heifer Show in the early 1990s with heifers that he raised. Andreas was making the sale every year at the Arkansas State Fair, as well as in Kansas City. In 1998 she won her class in Kansas City, with a Mailman steer that Jeremy clipped. They both graduated from high school in 1998 and attended school at Connors State College. Jeremy was

recruited to be on the school’s livestock judging team that was highly competitive at all national contests. In 1999 while attending Connors, Jeremy purchased a Witch Doctor steer from Jerry Adamson through Jeff McPeak. The steer went on to be Reserve Steer at the Arkansas State Fair in 2000. This situation made Jeremy think that he would like to consider this sector of the industry as a career. After Connors, both Jeremy and Andrea attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. In the fall of 2000, Jeremy took out a loan for $7,500 and went to

Yuma, Colorado to look at calves based on a classified ad in the High Plains Journal. He purchased five or six head with the money and covered the expenses. So, with some quick math one can see that the average was a lot different than it is today. One of these calves went on to win reserve at the Arkansas State Fair in 2001. Jeremy, while at the U of A, took a part time job in the show barn under Frank Jackson and Pat Haley at Jac’s Ranch a purebred angus operation in Bentonville, AR. This job would be a catalyst for their future, by allowing him to make connections in the show world with multiple seed stock producers. In May of 2002, Jeremy and Andrea were married. To say they didn’t have much would be an understatement. Jeremy worked full time at Jac’s while Andrea continued school. Their first daughter, Chancee, was born in the fall of 2002. They moved their small family to Mulberry, AR, by Andrea’s parents. They sold cattle private treaty that they bought, or that Jeremy had raised out of some of the cattle at his parents. That same year, they produced another reserve champion at the Arkansas State Fair. Jeremy clipped sale cattle and followed their families around to Jackpots, while also doing custom fitting at major shows for different ranches. With another reserve steer at the 2003 Arkansas State Fair, they then were able to convince a banker to loan them the

money to purchase the set of cows that had produced the last two steers. They were Maine influence which Jeremy liked because they could not only produce steers but also replacement heifers. In 2004 they moved to Romance, AR, where they purchased a working 100-acre dairy farm. They converted the milk barn to a cooler and clipping room, and the calf barn into a show barn. Unfortunately, the show cattle sales were not enough to support their growing family. Jeremy grew up raking and bailing hay with his father and grandfather, so they purchased two 7210 John Deere tractors, a John Deer bailer, 2 Cutters and the rest of the hay equipment necessary to start a custom hay-bailing business. With the help of Jeremy’s parents, they used the new equipment to run the business. Carlee was born in the fall of 2004; they also got their first big win at the Arkansas State Fair. The winning steer was a Dejavu calf purchased from a college friend named Jacob Tusa. They continued their annual fall private treaty bid-offs throughout the early 2000’s, and added females into the mix around 2006. With things still being tight financially, they used Kodak disposable cameras to photograph. They made photo duplicates and glued to poster boards for their advertisements at shows. Although they were doing

56

extremely well in Arkansas, they were not making much progress in selling out of the state. 2005 brought a repeat champion steer at the Arkansas State Fair which Jeremy had purchased from Nebraska. In 2006 they bought another set of Maine influence cows. One of these, an Irish Whiskey x Dateline Angus, was given to Chancee, and this cow would eventually raise her first show heifer. Chloee was the last addition to the Clark sisters in 2007, and this was the year that Jeremy clipped his first national champion by himself, she was a limousine female that won Denver. In 2009, five-year-old Chancee took her first show heifer to Maine Jr. Nationals in Murfreesboro, TN. She was the heifer that came from the Irish Whiskey cow we gave her. She won “Reserve bred and owned female”. This gave them the confidence to try to move to the bigger stage. Little did they know, this would be the start of what they are today and would solidify their love for the Maine-Anjou Breed. In 2012 they sold their first national champion owned female; a Purebred Simmental (aka Stella) shown by Kylie Sigmon. They continued to keep the streak alive in Arkansas. With online popularity increasing, in 2014 they decided to switch from a bid- off style to their first online sale. This move naturally allowed them to increase the amount of people they reached in the industry; in a way they could have never dreamed. The first sale averaged around $12,500 on 17 head of cattle. With things moving at a rapid pace on the show cattle side, they began scaling back on the hay business side to focus more on the cattle. This decision sparked the biggest move of their lives to this point. In August of 2015 after Chancee and Carlee showed 3 National Champions in two different breeds at Jr. Nationals, they moved their family to Oklahoma. In 2016 they

57

went to two sales a year, and by 2018 they were moving enough cattle that they felt like the traditional sale of private treaty was the way to go. Today, Clark Show Cattle runs 75 cows and 20-25 donors producing Maine- Anjou/Maine Influence, Angus, Chi, Simmental, and Herefords they also help manage 125 Maine Influence cows with Andrea's mother and father. They sell cattle private treaty year-round, consisting of 100-125 female and a select group of steers annually. According to Jeremy, the Clark family is involved in this great industry mainly because of the people and the environment surrounding it. It is also all that they have ever known. “We love watching young people achieve their goals and helping them do so as well as working with other operations around the country,” he says. “There is no better way for you to grow up than through a junior organization. They learn so many things to set them up for success in life regardless of their chosen occupation.” The Clark’s goal is to work with families who have the same desire and passion for the industry as they do. No matter what level they are trying to compete at. A lot of them become more like family. They are grateful for everyone that has helped them throughout their journey and acknowledge there are too many people

to thank. However, they did especially want to thank their parents for believing in them and helping them through everything when times were tough. The people Jeremy worked for over the years that allowed him to develop his skill set and eye for cattle. He has tried to pass these on to those that work for the family throughout the years. Some of these people are now the most talented young people in the industry and are following their own paths: Sam Wallace, Matt Loggins, Garrett Cloud, Spencer Miller, Trenton Tosh, Daniel Lackie, Colby Wilson, Ross Wingert, and Riley Godwin. Our mentors, friends, or partners within the industry that have helped us extensively; Kirk Roecker, Jirl Buck, Mark Williams, Matt Scasta, Ethan Moore, Terry Milam, Jo Perryman, Jacob Moore, Frank Jackson, and Ernie Wallace. “We wouldn’t be where we are today without them. We couldn’t

58

be prouder of our kids and their accomplishments. Chancee is 21 and starting her last show run. She has obtained an associate degree from Redlands College and is currently at OSU seeking a degree in Ag Business focused in accounting. Carlee is 19 and a freshman at OSU seeking an AG Business degree with a Minor is Economics and Pre-law. Chloee is a Junior at Muldrow High School and will also attend OSU, with hopes of becoming a pharmacist. We have been extremely blessed to have reached many goals. Our future goals include expanding our acreage and further grow embryo transfer program, and support more junior organizations, host our first live sale in 2028, and ultimately achieve some financial independence. We truly appreciate every single person that has helped us along the way!” If they could give any advice to young people starting in the industry it would be, dream big, set what you think are unobtainable goals to push yourself, don’t be afraid to work harder than your peers, don’t let the negativity of others enable your success, and lastly do not be afraid to approach industry leaders, they weren’t always the leaders. ●

The ability to start from scratch, work hard and produce greatness is a trait synonymous with the Frye Family. Ken Frye, his children Clayton, Tanisha and Debbie, and Clayton’s daughters, Olivia and Julia are three generations of a family that have taken the livestock industry to a different level. Everything they do, they do well; and with everything they invest their time in, they go big. The Frye Family has established multiple successful businesses over the years ranging from a dry wall supply company in Colorado and bar in Manhattan, Kansas to a French restaurant in New York. Their influence on great livestock operations such as Mid Continent Farms, Frye Cattle Company and Frye Sisters Livestock, however, is where they are a true standout in the Agriculture industry. As a family, they have won multiple banners from the National Western Stock Show, American

Royal and the Colorado State Fair. In addition to their personal National and State Fair wins, they have sold and been a part of numerous other Champions and leading genetics across the country. Frye’s ability to make big moves has made a lasting impact on our industry. Behind the scenes, the Frye Family has generously hosted fitting clinics and judging workouts for livestock youth. They are always willing to share their knowledge and expertise with those wanting to learn. If you speak with the family, however, they give all the credit to Ken. For those of you that know the Frye Family, loyalty runs deep. To hear the Frye’s story in its entirety, go to theshowtimesmagazine.com to listen to The Showtimes conversation with Ken and Clayton from their home in Johnstown, Colorado. ●

Brian, Laurie and Lisa Reid [The Showtimes] have known the Frye family their entire lives. The Fryes were always the first people to jump in to support The Blackout Jackpot and Olivia Frye even made her debut as a livestock show announcer at The Blackout at the age of 10. The Showtimes looks forward to what’s next for the Frye Family!
