Earlier this year I was at a show where I heard a judge mention that “It doesn’t really matter.” They were talking about how everyone was a winner and that it didn’t really matter wether or not your animal made the drive or was back in the barn. Basically, everyone was a winner just for showing. While that might be partially true that it is great to show, I really feel that IT MATTERS . Everyone shows for different reasons and have different goals. Some might find success in winning Grand Champion, while others are happy with making the sale or even just getting an animal to the show. Don’t forget that everything in life matters. If winning didn’t matter, why do we show. In life, everything we do matters. How you treat people. How hard you work. Right and wrong. Every aspect of everything we do matters. Another time, we were showing at our State Fair and someone from our county asked how the show went for us. We told them that we got 3rd in our class. They said “That is all you could ask for.” That really showed how people have different goals. Since we had won our State Fair several times before, 3rd place was below what our goals were and what was possible to achieve. Everyone should always strive to do their best and not cut themselves short. Having high expectations is not a bad thing and only makes you better. Don’t halfway do anything. Don’t take advantage of people. Treat people with respect, be ethical, be a good person and always do your best. Present yourself well. Care for your livestock. Be kind to your friends and your enemies. You won’t achieve every goal or win every show, but you should always give your best. It matters.
