FOUNDATION PROGRAMS

Suffolk Foundation Scholarship - $1,000 Application is open to any Suffolk youth graduating high school or students enrolled at a college, university, or technical college. Applicants must own registered Suffolk sheep. Funds are paid directly to the winner’s educational institution and only used for academic pursuits. To qualify an entrant must complete an application, submit two letters of recommendation, and provide a current transcript of scholastic credits. Finalists will have a virtual or phone interview with the Scholarship Committee in June. Winner will be announced by July 1st. Prior scholarship recipients are eligible to apply, but preference will be given to those that have not previously received the scholarship. Applications must be received by the office no later than June 1st. Winners will be selected entirely based on merit. Royer Farm Suffolk - $2,000 Offered to Suffolk youth who reside in the states of Indiana, Illinois, or Iowa and plan to enroll in a 2-year or 4-year college/university within one year of application. The applicant must have exhibited registered Suffolk sheep at least four years, in Indiana, Illinois or Iowa. This requirement does not need to be consecutively or currently. Funds will be paid directly to the winner’s college or university and may be used for academic pursuits only. Recipient will be selected based on merit of the persons who apply. Scholarship will not be given, if qualified applicants are not available or if the application is not of such quality to warrant such scholarship. Discretion of this is within the powers of the Scholarship Committee. This scholarship is funded by Royer Farm of Illinois.

Hanna Warnecke of Columbus Grove, Ohio is currently a student at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute majoring in Agricultural Communications and minoring in Youth Development. Upon graduation she hopes to become a youth coordinator or become involved with a sheep organization. Hanna was a past winner of the Suffolk Ewe Lamb Giveaway program, a member of the UJSSA, active in the Ohio Suffolk Sheep Association and enjoys showing her Suffolk and Tunis sheep throughout the country. Hanna was an active 4-H member, serving as a 4-H camp counselor, on the Ohio 4-H Teen Leadership Council, her club's community service leader and Northwest Ohio 4-H Regional Leader, just to name a few. Danielle Berry of Willits, California is currently a student at Feather River Junior College in Quincy, California. Upon graduation she plans to attend UC Davis and pursue vet school with plans to become a large animal vet. Danielle was a past winner of the Suffolk Ewe Lamb Giveaway and participated in the Suffolk Futurity Program. Danielle was the President of her local FFA chapter and through FFA has received her green hand, chapter and state degrees. In addition to showing sheep, Danielle also shows horses. Olivia Stodghill of Oskaloosa, Iowa is currently attending Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science. Upon graduation she plans to attend vet school and become a large animal veterinarian. Olivia is responsible for the daily care of her family's Suffolk flock and has exhibited her Suffolks for 9 years at the Southern Iowa Fair and Iowa State Fair. She was involved with her local FFA and 4-H chapters where she's held leadership offices such as President, Vice President and Secretary. Over the years she's served as a volunteer with the Jackson Cemetery Restoration Project, Oskaloosa Silver Cord Program, and several other community events.

ALL-AMERICAN JUNIOR SHOW CASH PRIZES New in 2022 , the Suffolk Foundation offers cash prizes to first, second and third place Suffolk exhibitor in the AAJS leadership competitions. Entries must promote Suffolk sheep and the exhibitor must declare Suffolks as their breed. Cash prizes are $100 for 1st place, $75 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place. In 2022 the Suffolk Foundation awarded over $400 in cash prizes to Suffolk exhibitors!

In 2022 the Suffolk Foundation offered a Young Producer Travel Grant to the American Lamb Summit. The American Lamb Summit is an educational conference designed to inspire production improvements and

What were some takeaways from Lamb Summit for the Suffolk breed? Suffolk sheep fit very well into the carcass driven market. They are fast gaining and with more muscle per day of age, giving them an advantage over other breeds. Suffolks are also a great terminal sire which would be one more avenue to market too. Get involved with producers across the country; learn what has worked and not

worked for them and see how you can implement their experiences into your program. Get out there and share your story! You just never know who your next customer will be. What are some ways that the Suffolk breed can contribute to work to improve the quality of American Lamb? Suffolks can, do, and will contribute to the improvement of American lamb! American lamb is superior over others. Suffolks carry highly heritable genes that can influence the future of our industry. This breed will help us put more lamb on plates with the size of carcesses, rate of gain per day of age, and flavor. Flavor is the key for the consumer to have a positive experience with lamb.

Michigan State University, and the Michigan Sheep Producers Association partnered to host this unique educational event. Watch for more programs like this from the Suffolk Foundation in future years! This grant covered event registration, lodging and travel expenses. Ashley Larson resides in Tenino, Washington with her husband and two daughters. She has been raising sheep for the past 20 years focusing on Suffolk sheep. She is very active with the Washington State Sheep Producers and youth sheep programs in her area.
