like the colors and the pokes, so it fit. I can’t say there was any special reason why we chose the name Lucky Strike. I wanted something different and unique. When I thought of it, it stuck. My sister is a very talented graphic designer so I sent her the name and asked her to come up with some ideas for a logo. When she sent some options to pick from, the one stuck out to me and we went with it. Do you have an ideal weight range for your Champion Steer? Our ideal weight range has changed significantly in the last 25 years. Back when I showed, I remember 1284 being the number. You also never wanted a calf weighing over 1300 pounds at that time. As the industry progressed, we worked our way through the 1300 pound range and now are even very comfortable in the 1400’s. I don’t necessarily get hung up on a number because we all want to make one as close to ideal in terms of
type and kind as possible. If they are in a range of acceptability, whether on the low or the high end, it’s more about their quality, build, freshness and market readiness.
You’ve excelled selling both steers and heifers at shows across the country from Junior Nationals to winning the American Royal last fall. What has been your most memorable win? The good Lord has blessed our program over the last 20 years with a great deal of success. Seeing customers work hard and helping them turn that hard work into success has always been a big driver for me. In 2018 we were fortunate to raise the Grand Champion steer at the National Western for the Skiles family. Watching that one grow from a baby to winning a major show was hard to top. But winning the American Royal Market Steer Show this past
