es and Nicole Horn run a small cow- calf operation in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Their

backgrounds in the show cattle industry are very different, but the skills they each developed have made them a dynamic team for raising kids and cattle!

Nicole grew up in Independence, Iowa on her family farm. She began showing cattle at the National Cattle Congress at 5 years old. She traveled to local, state, and national shows exhibiting Shorthorns, Chianina’s, and Maine Anjou heifers alongside her sister, Corinn Berry, and parents Doug and Janel Rathbun. In high school, when Nicole wasn’t in the ring, she could be found playing a variety of sports! Having the county Beef Superintendent as a dad kept Nicole very involved at the local level, as she frequently tagged along to help him clip for county fair exhibitors and to check-in on fair operations. In her time at Iowa State University, Nicole was on the committee for the Kirkwood Hoof and Horn, and Block and Bridle shows. Following graduation, she took on a full time job, but continued to help young families get involved in the show cattle industry. Nicole’s favorite way to help out was by helping in the ring, as she got a front row seat to the joy these newbies showed as their love grew for the industry! Nicole is surrounded by some incredible people who have influenced her life-long involvement. She is inspired and grateful for the support shown to her over the years by her parents, grandparents, Aunt

Jill, and Uncle Jeff - to make a few. Wes grew up on a commercial cow- calf and quarter-horse operation in Northwest Arkansas. He started showing cattle in 1982. In the mid-80s, Wes began working for Ed Richardson at his custom fitting operation Richardson Cattle Company out of Fairland, Oklahoma. This team was a part of many national champions over more than a decade together. Sometime in the early 90s, Wes went over to Miami, Texas to work for Bill Breeding at B & C Cattle. Since then, Wes has been a part of many national champions while working with a variety of farms and ranches across the region - Deer Valley, Hudson Herefords, and Martin Farms. He has been blessed by great cattle who bring home the national titles, and great families who put their trust in his knowledge and skills! Wes packs all their experience and knowledge into his toolbox and uses it today as a Stock Show U Professor. You can always find Wes supporting the younger generation.

Ed Richardson and Bill Breeding are two men that have had a strong influence over Wes’ life. They gave him a chance and have shaped him into who he is today! Mark and Stephanie Ebling of High View Ranch have been a big part of Wes’ life whether it is trading calves or breeding cows. Some others who have had a great impact on Wes and his involvement in the industry are Paul Trueblood, John Sullivan, Wes Hudson, Neal Thompson, Kenny Neville, and Shane Lindsay. Wes and Nicole have 2 little ones who are just beginning their involvement in the show cattle industry. Harper is 7 years old and loves to show her heifers, and her little brother Weston, 3, is always by her side to help! During the first weekend of December, the whole Horn crew can be found running their annual sale of multiple breeds show heifers and donor prospect, The Gathering, on December 7th in Stillwater. ●

Ground Turkey has been a family tradition in our house for 4 generations. I even love to eat it simply on white bread as a sandwich.

PUFFS THE ULTIMATE THANKSGIVING LEFTOVER

INGREDIENTS • ½ Cup Butter • 1 Cup Water • ¼ teaspoon Salt • 1 Cup All-Purpose Flour • 4 Large Eggs

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

INGREDIENTS • 3 Cups Turkey I mix Dark & White Meat • ½ Medium Onion Rough Chopped • 2 Large Celery Sticks Rough Chopped • 1/3 Cup Miracle Whip • Salt to Taste DIRECTIONS 1. Add Onion, celery, and turkey into a large food processer. 2. Pulse (don’t just turn on or it will make it pasty) to chop everything together into small pieces 3. Pour into a bowl and add miracle whip slowing to make it as wet or dry as you like. Salt to taste. 1. Once your puffs are cooled slice in half but not all the way through. 2. Fill with ground turkey and enjoy!

2. In a large pot, bring water and butter to a rolling boil. 3. Stir in flour and salt until the mixture forms a ball. 4. Transfer the dough to a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or stand mixer, beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. 5. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them a couple of inches apart. 6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown. Centers should be dry.

Fill with left over stuffing, ground turkey, and cranberry sauce to make the ultimate leftover bite! You can also use the puffs on their own with a pudding or whipped cream filling to make traditional Cream Puffs! OTHER OPTIONS!

2024 NAILE STEER JUDGE FRANK WARD ANSWERS TEN OF OUR QUESTIONS!

HOW WILL YOU APPROACH/ PREPARE FOR JUDGING THE STEERS AT THE NAILE? I’m not sure there is a right way to prepare. I live it,

breathe it, and study cattle every day. People always say you’ll make one, maybe two people happy when you judge a show. I don’t overcomplicate it, I just pick the ones I like, and I appreciate people bringing me great cattle to evaluate. WHO HAS HAD THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOU AS A PERSON? At the age of 15, I had the privilege of meeting a man named Jackie Davis, who has since been inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame. I’d recently moved to Napa,

California, from Colorado and knew next to nothing about showing cattle. I just knew I loved it and wanted to learn. He hauled

me to shows, taught me to feed and clip, and after high school, got me a job as the show cattle herdsman for Creekside Polled Herefords,

which was the largest Polled Hereford breeder in the country at the time. It didn’t matter to Jackie if a guy had a million dollars or was a kid moving wheel lines, he showed everyone respect. He taught me never to forget where you came from and always be willing to share what you’ve learned with others.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF CATTLE? Spending time with my family hunting, fishing and watching them play sports. HOW DO YOU ENCOMPASS YOUR BACKGROUND AS A CATTLE PRODUCER INTO JUDGING A STEER SHOW? I look at it from three different angles. As a breeder, as someone whose invested in selling show cattle, and as a father who drags kids down the show road. When standing in the ring, I appreciate the good ones that are truly unique because I know how hard they are to make. I know it’s late nights calving, early mornings heat detecting, and the ability to look at what you raise objectively enough to continue to make genetic improvements. I’ve sold calves to kids for 30 years and recognize it’s a tremendous responsibility when they put their trust in you to help guide them to their goals. Finally, I look at it as the parent of an exhibitor, knowing the level of commitment the young people and their families have regarding time and investment. I’m grateful for the unique perspective being involved in so many different aspects of the industry has afforded me. It’s not something I take lightly, whether I’m asked to judge a county fair or a national show.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY IN THE FUTURE? I’d like to see it grow.

To do that, we need to be more open and inviting to families who are just beginning. It can be intimidating when first-time families go to a show and are overwhelmed. We all have an obligation to create a welcoming environment that fosters the growth of our industry. YOU ARE FROM CALIFORNIA AND WERE ASKED TO JUDGE ONE THE LARGEST STEER SHOWS IN THE COUNTRY– WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? It’s an honor to have been asked to judge the NAILE again. There’s nothing like looking at great cattle on the green chips. No matter what state you are from, good cattle are good cattle, and I’m confident good livestock are born all over the country. Where you are from is irrelevant. I encourage young people from coast to coast and border to border to always chase their passion, whether fitting, breeding, or evaluating livestock.

WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE WOULD BE SURPRISED

TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I love a good ranch

horse and spending time branding calves with my friends and my kids.

IF YOU COULD BUILD THE PERFECT STEER, WHAT WOULD HE LOOK LIKE? Our family tries to achieve this every year when making our mating decisions. I suppose the reality is that we will always get to chase that dream because God has yet to make the perfect steer. The perfect steer would have all the extras while still being perfectly sound. He’d be striking from the side and shapely from every angle. He’d be perfectly proportional in his balance, lay in smooth at his shoulder, be wide chested, blend smooth into his rib cage, big backed, huge hipped, and wide and square in his pins. That calf would be massively built in his skeleton and bone, have dinner plates for feet, and be so athletic and flexible that he’d lap everyone in the class.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST PIECE OF ADVICE? If you ask my boys, they will tell you that I consistently tell them that it’s the details that separate good from great, whether they are showing livestock or playing sports.

My name is Grace Angotti, and I am currently a senior at Western Illinois University. I grew up in Freedom, Wisconsin. My parents, Daniel and Missy Angotti, immersed me in the livestock industry. I grew up showing cattle and hogs, and it wasn’t uncommon for our daily dinner conversations to be filled with talk of livestock. I developed a strong passion for this industry early on, and when it came time to decide where to continue my education, a close family friend mentioned Black Hawk East. My family and I set up a tour, and when I stepped foot in the Dan Hoge Auditorium, I knew I had found the place for me. When I was asked to write this article, I thought back to the beginning of my judging career, which started much later than most. Just three short years ago, I walked through the doors at Black Hawk East, not knowing what the future might hold. I remember walking into Dr. Blake Bloomberg's office, introducing myself, and telling him I wanted to be a part of the Livestock Judging Team. Later that day, when I walked into the auditorium, I was met by a talented group of livestock judges—these individuals were now my teammates. To say I was behind would be an understatement. Dr. Bloomberg even joked at our banquet afterward that he thought I would quit within the first two weeks. When I started livestock judging as a junior college contestant, my goals began small. They started with getting through a set of reasons without using a notebook, followed by marking cleaner cards. I strived to make the top ten at a contest to earn a spot on the marking five. Valuing education just as much as the livestock industry, I set the goal of becoming an Academic All-American as well. My final goal, after making the marking five, was to win a national contest. This seemed out of reach, and I was unsure if it would ever happen, with only two contests left in my collegiate career. Now, looking back, every goal I set for myself has been achieved. SENIOR COLLEGIATE HIGH INDIVIDUAL OVERALL

There is only one word that comes to mind when describing this year's American Royal: unforgettable. Hearing my name called as this year's High Individual at the 125th American Royal left me speechless. With all that in mind, all I can say is, "Dreams only work if you do." None of these dreams would have been possible without taking the daunting first step to Black Hawk East and being surrounded by the best educators, mentors, and friends. I would be remiss if I didn’t finish this by thanking everyone in my corner. I want to start by thanking my parents and all my family back home in Wisconsin for always being there for me, being proud no matter the outcome, and believing in me through it all. Next, I would like to extend a thank you to Dr. Blake Bloomberg. When I walked through the doors at Black Hawk East, clueless about the world of livestock judging, you could have easily dismissed me, but you didn't. You pushed me as hard as everyone else and played a huge role in my success to this day. I couldn’t have done it without your belief in me from day one. Lastly, I would like to thank Dr. Mark Hoge, Caleb Boden, and Leremy Jackson. Without that phone call to check out Western Illinois University, I’m not sure this dream would have been possible. Deciding where to attend senior college was hard, but being joined by many of my junior college friends made Western Illinois feel like home. Dr. Hoge is one of the most creative, intelligent, and thought-provoking individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting. He made my decision easy, knowing I would be coached by him and two others well-versed in all species. The intelligence I have been surrounded by here and the education I have gained are things I will continue to cherish. Although this journey is coming to an end, these days will truly be some of the best, and I cannot thank all of you enough for everything you have done for me. ●

I’m Tyeson Gravenhof, from the small town of Roundup, Montana. West of Roundup, I resided on my family’s purebred angus ranch, where we raise and market seedstock. Also running a herd of 100 show goats. I grew up with incredibly loving and supportive parents that instilled in me a moral compass, a hard work ethic, and deep rooted faith. As well as two older siblings who pushed me and gave me big shoes to fill in the arena of life. As many are, I was heavily involved in 4-H and FFA growing up exhibiting goats and cattle which led to my eventual interest in judging. I vividly remember going to my first livestock judging contest at the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE) without ever participating in a formal judging practice prior too. Judging 10 classes and giving 4 sets of reasons alongside 300 other contestants as a 13 year old felt overwhelming. I was

fearful of my performance and thus headed to cattle tie outs directly after the contest to make beds and turn out for the people I was helping. Later that evening when I found out I had won the contest, I still told everyone “I will never do that again.” Reluctantly, I continued to judge and grew to love and found a passion in evaluating stock. The fall of my senior year rolled around and I embarked on the quest to find a college. Touring places across the country, none seemed like the right fit until my last stop. Leaving the mountains and open spaces of Montana was difficult, but I found a place that felt like home in Miami, Oklahoma. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and the faculty of the Agriculture Department are second to none and have become family to me. They have a way of facilitating opportunities, and pushing me and my peers to strive for success in all of our

aspirations, but above all continually keeping us grounded and reminding us of the importance of being good people. I was incredibly blessed to become part of a diverse team that meshed well from the beginning. My teammates both challenge and encourage me. Most importantly, I am thankful for our tight-knit nature and the cherished friendships that have stemmed from it. I look forward to seeing the things I know they will accomplish in their endeavors of life. Even though I never told anyone, I knew from the beginning that if I was fortunate enough to find success I hoped it would be at The American Royal. The American Royal contest is no stranger to quality livestock, intense competition and rich livestock judging history. Unsurprisingly, my nerves were high going to the contest. When contest day arrived, I had flashbacks of

the same uneasy feeling I felt as that of a 13 year old some odd years ago. As I walked through the contest on the floor of Hale Arena, I continued to read the bible verse written on the back of my steno. Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present you’re requests to God.” I accredit the reassurance of this verse and a mighty God for the wave of calmness that came over me as I sorted the classes. At the end of the day I’m beyond thankful for the incredible day I had in Kansas City, but what’s paramount today will be a footnote tomorrow. It’s the people you meet and the relationships you foster that will serve you for the rest of your life. So thank God, stay humble, and strive to be better continuously. ●

T welve talented individuals from seven different states, converged at one historic location with one solitary goal. During the recent American Royal in Kansas City, that goal was accomplished. Black Hawk East was named the champion team in junior college livestock judging. BHE has been recognized in collegiate livestock judging for over 50 years. But this years win at the American Royal is something extra special. Not only did they win the contest by a decided margin, but they captured the honor in the presence of the 20 year anniversary team, who was also from BHE. Dr. Blake Bloomberg, coach on the BHE team, emphasized how incredible it is to win a contest like the American Royal and could not be more proud of this year’s team. “This team didn’t just bring home a title, they set the new standard for hard work, passion and dedication,” said Bloomberg. “I am proud of each and every one of them for raising the bar and showing what it means to judge with heart and precision. It was even more special that 20 years ago my wife and I were on the team for BHE that also won in KC.” In 2004, that team from BHE garnered a huge victory at the American Royal including winning reasons by over 50 points. This team went on to post one of the more legendary performances in junior college judging history by winning every national contest. Returning to the Royal this year were some of those team members from 20 years ago, along with famed coach Dan Hoge.

“The Black Hawk team from 2004-2005 is arguably one of the greatest teams ever assembled,” said Hoge. But this current champion BHE team is in right on track to be memorable as well. They are undoubtedly talented. They represent some of the most impressive young livestock evaluators from all over the country. Stemming from diverse backgrounds within both production and the showring across all species, this group will be fun to watch as they continue to make their mark in history. “We have a special group dynamic,” said Klara Leach, BHE team member. “We are all highly competitive, yet we still build off one another.” Matthew Blackburn, a team member from Indiana, says this team is like a second family. “Our team is special not only because our talent runs deep,” said Blackburn, “but because we have all grown and become really close to each other, just like family.” These young evaluators have big goals as the team moves on to other major competitions. But one thing is for sure, the history books will always include this great group of stockman! ●
