GRISWOLD CATTLE ARE FEATURED ON OUR NEW COVER! DON’T MISS THE CLASSIC THIS DECEMBER!
Deion Sanders, Coach Prime, has taken the world by storm. He’s confident, passionate and has a style that is all his own. While the livestock industry is a long way from a gridiron, there is something all of us can learn from watching him. All it takes is one person to make a difference. Whether you are an exhibitor, producer, judge, or entrepreneur - never settle by being like everyone else. Push yourself daily to be the best you can be and change the game. This Year End Edition is made up of people who have helped shape the current state of the livestock industry. Starting with our cover, the Griswold family’s Classic Sale, has set the standard for not only genetics, but how to market and sell your cattle. It is always a pleasure for us to work with John, Jeannie and their family. Quality people and cattle is not isolated to page 1. From cover to cover, the pages of this issue showcase top notch people, genetics, shows and products. Check out full show coverage from the American Royal and the Tulsa State Fair where The Showtimes was honored to be the Official Media Partners. You also won’t want to miss the feature on our newest Hall of Fame Inductee, Tyler “Lil Bob” Overby on page 170. CHANGE THE GAME
This year, The Showtimes premiered the This Is Why We Show Series where we go one-on-one with the best of the best in the livestock world. We kicked things off with Bob May, Dan Hoge, the Vickland Family and Mark Ebeling. We will continue with these exclusive interviews into the new year. All videos can be viewed online through the Showtimes Facebook. It does not take black cowboy hats and flashy shades like the CU football coach sports to make a lasting impact on those around you. Use this magazine as a tool, be good to people and work hard – and you will be the change you want to see in the world. Happy Thanksgiving & Merry Christmas! Lisa M. Reid Owner/Editor

INGREDIENTS -1 CUP MARGARINE (BUTTER CAN BE USED BUT DOUGH WILL BE MORE STIFF) -2/3 CUP SUGAR -1 EGG -2 1/2 CUPS FLOUR -1/2 TEASPOON SALT DIRECTIONS
72
Cream the butter and sugar (I mix by hand, it turns out differently in a mixer). Then beat in the egg and vanilla. Add flour and salt and mix until completely combined. Form dough into a disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill dough for 3 hours or overnight in the fridge.
Preheat oven to 350° F
On a flour-covered surface, roll out dough to desired thickness (I make mine about 1/4 inch thick).
Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.
Bake cookies on a silk pad for about 8 minutes (the bottoms should be light gold). Decorate cooled cookies with frosting and sprinkles of your choice!
ENJOY!

t seems like in Texas, our season goes straight from summer to winter, and this year was no different. The eighty- degree days roll right on along until there’s a cold snap and we have highs in the thirties. This year, it fell on a weekend we needed to clip cattle for a show. First, we had to gather up our gloves, stocking caps and winter coats. Once we got outside, we realized both of our kerosene heaters were out of fuel. Its not that we didn’t watch the weather to know it was coming, we’d just been busy and weren’t prepared. In our walk with Jesus, we can also get caught being unprepared. When times are good, we might get a little too busy and fail to read our Bible, fail to praise God for all the gifts He’s given us, and neglect our relationship with Him. When something bad happens, maybe and illness or death of a loved one, stress at work, or financial strain, we start praying right away. We call on Jesus when we need Him and pray real hard for Him to get us through our messes. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:10-18, “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on
the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” The thing is, we don’t know when we are about to be attacked. If we aren’t wearing the full armor of God all the time, we leave ourselves open to being attacked. Maybe you haven’t said that little prayer inviting Jesus into your heart, asking forgiveness for your sins, and proclaiming to follow Him. If so, today is the day. Maybe you’ve said the prayer and are following Him, but you’ve been putting off getting baptized. Just do it. Be ready for the storms that come by nourishing your relationship and praying to Jesus, reading your scripture, and keeping armed for whatever storms may come your way. ■

G reetings, I’m Mya Curran, a southern Iowa native from Chariton. I am currently in seventh grade. When I’m not showing cattle, you can often find me playing softball, volleyball, basketball, or golf. Additionally, I am very active in my school’s FFA chapter and I have been a part of the livestock judging team for two years now. My family primarily raises registered Angus cattle, however, I have also shown Chianina, Hereford,
and Maine cattle. My show career started when I was just 5 years old with a miniature Hereford heifer we called Jypsy. "Yes, everyone knew it was spelled wrong, but me." I have spent most of my show career showing breeding heifers, traveling the country, and attending various junior national shows. Showing cattle is not just an individual effort; it is a team sport that requires the help of my family. You can often find my dad, mom, and older brother Ky working together with me in the barn. We all work together
to ensure that we provide the best possible care for our cattle and that they are in top condition for the shows. However, this is, without a doubt, my most significant accomplishment in the show ring. It isn't easy to describe what this experience means to me. My steer Cotton was exceptional, and he knew it. He always acted like he had some other place to be or was running late. Despite his vibrant personality Cotton and I got along extremely well together, and most of the time, he behaved for me. Our journey to the American
Royal competition began with the sole aim of making the sale, but it ended up being a dream come true as we won the Grand Champion Steer title. The moment when Cotton was slapped Champion is something I will always cherish. My family has been attending the American Royal for over 20 years. Both my mom and dad exhibited market steers there. In 2010 and again in 2016, my cousin Macey exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer. Showing cattle runs deep in our family, and I am

fortunate to have many skilled relatives in the industry. I would like to extend a special thanks to Jake Campbell, Tracy Goretska, Tyler McVay, Chad Lukavsky, and the entire Goretska Show Steers team for their guidance and support throughout the past show season. Their efforts ensured that Cotton looked "top-notch" on show day. I would also like to thank my mom, dad, and brothers Ky and Krue for always being my biggest supporters, I couldn’t do it without you. ■

H i, I’m Avery Layton from Bend, Oregon and I just got done competing at my first American Royal. I am beyond grateful and amazed to have exhibited the Grand Champion Market Hog at the Royal. Dreams really do come true!! This summer I told my mom that I would win the American Royal with my barrow Cartman. She said “Avery that is a
very big statement”. I told her that no dream is too big. You see I’m a huge Stetson Wright fan, he’s 7x world champion. I had watched an interview this summer were he said, “No dream is too big” and last week my dream came true!!! I am very passionate about agriculture because I have helped my grandparents on their hay and cattle ranch since I was born. I decided to
follow in brothers footsteps and show pigs and broaden my knowledge about another specie. Someday I hope to become a large animal vet and also teach others the importance of agriculture. As a lot of people forget where our food comes from, especially lately. I am truly blessed to have the people I have in my corner. I have thought about those words a lot
since listening to judge Will Winters in the grand drives speech….. “Just because they’re in your circle, don’t mean they’re in your corner. Find the ones that got your back, go to battle for them, and they’ll dang sure go to battle for you”. In my opinion I have the best extended family anyone could ever ask for. There are so many people to thank for getting me to this
point, my parents, my brother Jack, the entire Taipin family and our show family. Noa, I would especially like to thank you as without you I would not be where I am today. Lastly, I want everyone to know no dream is to big you just have to believe it in your heart! ■

H ello, I am Cara Cummins from Hollis, Oklahoma. I am 16 years old and currently a junior at Hollis High School. This past month I exhibited the Grand Champion Market Steer at the Tulsa State Fair. I have two brothers, Cooper and Crew Cummins, and as the middle child, my life has been nothing short of lots of entertainment and great memories with both of them. My show career started when I was 6 years old when I first exhibited at local jackpots showing pigs. Aside from showing I have been involved in both cheerleading and basketball throughout my entire life, but nothing compares to the passion I have when it comes to the barn, or the memories I have made with both my family and friends. I can confidently say growing up in the livestock industry, it has given me what no other industry has
to offer. I have been given immense opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the agriculture industry which has allowed me to form connections with industry professionals and leaders that are second to none. I have loved everything about the competition, the people, and the lessons I have learned throughout the years and as my final years approach, I continue to be more grateful than ever before. Every year my family and I put a great deal of time into the barn. In 2022, a core memory was created for us. I was the Grand Champion Market goat, and my brother Cooper, was the Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer at the American Royal. This night in particular made me realize how important it was to always lend a helping hand to those you love the most because in the end, your family is always
going to be your biggest supporters and the best team you could ask for. Without the help of both the Bounds Show Goats Crew and the Lucky Strike Crew, that night would not have been possible. Most recently, there was a new memory made that meant just as much to me as the Royal. The Tulsa State Fair 2023 is one I will not forget. Although I have a true passion for showing goats, I wanted to focus on cattle for Tulsa, and put my heart and soul into a set of steers. As the day approached the adrenaline was rushing, I thought I had a shot at the purple banner but I was too nervous to think about it. As the showman for both champion Crossbred and Maine Anjou steer, I was extra excited going into the grand drive. That night was a roller coaster of emotions, my family had never been grand at a steer show of this magnitude before and
we wanted nothing more than to secure that. As I got the champion slap, I was more than excited! I could not give enough thanks to my family, especially my parents BJ and Destiny Cummins and my brothers, Cooper and Crew, for all of the help getting these calves ready. Thank you to Jared Arthur and the entire Lucky Strike crew for your constant support of myself and my entire family. The Longacre family for being the second best family a girl could ever ask for, and to everyone else who played a role along the way. I am looking forward to the rest of my show career making memories with my family and friends. Words will never express the gratitude I have for this industry and everyone who continues to put on events for the youth in the livestock and agriculture industries. ■
