ONE What are you most excited about judging the 2023 Illinois State Fair Market Steer Show? The quality of the cattle! Barn talk claims this show in the real deal, and we’re excited to see it. TWO What are the top 5 things you look for in a Champion? Joe - Best summed up by a 5 year old that I judged 12 years ago: “Big feet, Big butt, Big belly, Loooong neck and fuzzy ears. Me- “Why fuzzy ears?” 5yo - “Because he’ll probably be hairy everywhere else. Oh and dad said you better start with big feet or you won’t be able to have any of the other things.” THREE What is your biggest pet peeve in the ring? Joelynn - I sadly have a lot, but I think a lack of sportsmanship trumps all other pet peeves. It is understandable to be upset if your animal does not place as well as you’d expected, but ultimately we are willingly participating in a subjective sport. Joe - To be blunt, when exhibitors are outwardly rude about their placing. FOUR How have the trends changed in the past few years? Joe - The biggest change has been how good and deep the quality has become. Shows seem to be so much more competitive now, that it’s not enough to just be solid, you better be complete and have an out there extra piece or two to win. FIVE What is something that most people don’t know about you? Joelynn - hands down, that I’m the critical one of the two of us. Joe likes to tell people that I make it hard to sell baby steers, I’m too hard on everything. But seriously, one of my favorite things to do with I’m picturing in the ring is watch feet.
