August 2023 State Fair Edition

i, my name is Ty Collum & I’m from Perkins, Oklahoma. I am the son of Dusty and Christa Collum, little brother to Riley. I will start my senior year of high school in the fall. My family and I have been involved in the cattle industry for four generations. Some of my first memories are riding around in my great grandpa’s old dodge feed truck with my dad and sister, checking cows and putting out cubes to our commercial cow-calf herd. I started my show career when I was nine years old. To say that we were clueless about the show world would be an understatement. Thankfully we got in touch with some fantastic families that helped us through our first few years.

The first success I had in the show ring was with my heifer we called ‘Birdie’. After winning the commercial heifer show at the Tulsa State Fair in 2017, I was hooked. Throughout the years we showed a few different breeds of cattle, but by far my favorite have always been the Angus. I think they’re my favorite because of just how competitive they are. I remember watching the Grand Drive at my very first Angus Junior Nationals in Des Moines and being in awe of the quality of cattle in the ring. In that moment, it became my biggest dream to stand in that ring for grand drive. When we got my Georgina heifer, I knew we had just made a big step in that direction.
