August 2023 State Fair Edition

i, I’m Ty Drach. I’ve grown up on my family’s grain and show cattle operation in Pontiac, IL. Growing up with 4-H and FFA afforded me many opportunities, and ultimately sparked my interest in livestock judging. This is what lead me to Black Hawk College East Campus in Kewanee, Illinois to further my education and compete on the livestock judging team. Following a great two years of being selected as an All-American and part of the Junior College Team of the Year, I decided to transfer to Oklahoma State University. This fall, I will be a senior, pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Animal Science with a business option and competing on the livestock judging team that good off to a good start earlier this year. Eventually, I plan to continue my education toward a master’s

in either ruminant nutrition or meat science while helping coach a judging team. I hope to continue to build my cattle operation and one day have a sale. Winning the Simmental Junior National was quite literally a dream come true for my family and me. My grandpa, Larry Parr, got involved with the Simmental breed soon after they came to the US, and winning this show has been a particular goal for us. As many stories go, it hasn’t been the smoothest ride with this heifer in particular. Roxi, as we call her, had a mind of her own and was a handful for my family to break while I was away at school. Teamwork got it done. As with many families, winning a junior national has been a goal, but it was that much sweeter given this was my last show as a junior. ■
