THIS ISSUE IS YOUR NUMBER ONE SOURCE FOR FALL PASTURE SALES AND SUMMER SHOW RESULTS!
OLD WAY OF LIFE
Real conversation starts when people say what they actually think. I was blown away by the response to my Editor’s Note in the May/June issue of The Showtimes talking about keeping the human factor in what you do. One simple note revealed that more people than you think place a value to what many now refer to as the “old way of life.” A solid handshake, a handwritten note or giving your actual time to make connections with people go a long way. I have been doing The Showtimes now for over half of my life. What has made the biggest impact on not only the business, but me as a person, is not the number of likes on a social media, but the people who are Showtimes in my book. Joe Sullivan, featured on the cover of this issue, believed in 15, 16 and 20 year old with a dream of starting a livestock magazine and gave us our first big break by buying the cover of our
State Fair issue a year in advance. Don Greiman, who we dearly miss, showed us the ropes of the Iowa State Fair and always scheduled a time to have lunch and make sure we were given the red carpet treatment at the show. Customers like Tres Rios Silver, who have advertised in every single issue of The Showtimes since our very first issue published in April of 2007. They are a family owned, and faith driven business that have truly supported us from day one. The livestock and supplies marketed and sold through The Showtimes is humbling, but it’s the people and the connections made over the years that keep us working long hours and full speed ahead. Between traveling to Junior Nationals and designing and printing backdrops and awards for Fairs, putting together this issue, our largest of the year, is as Graham Blagg recently told us, “Bet it’s like wrangling cats.” Mission accomplished – I could not be prouder of the publication you are reading and encourage you to read it cover to cover. Congratulate the winners highlighted [in person] when you see them, give the advertisers business, and don’t forget the human factor.

“Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” One of my favorite quotes and ironically one that pertains to the success of Paulsen Cattle both past and present. I have always tried to surround myself with the best and with that came some of the most supportive friends that never left my side. All that is backed up by my incredible family, both an amazing wife (Carmen) and incredible kids (Kinnick, Copeland, and Huck) and two devoted and incredibly patient parents (Jeff and Kris). My love for cattle started with my Grandma Donna and in the Simmental breed. She always loved to take us to shows and give everyone in town a report the following week.
I had a great ag teacher in Joel Frost who always pushed me through my FFA years and the greatest show of support I could think of, became my first customer, and never left through his kid’s entire show career’s ending in a Supreme Female at the Iowa state fair. Still a great friend today. As I got older, I was lucky enough to work with some people that were staples in the industry and people I considered, and still do, iconic within our livestock community. In high school I met Jim Bloomberg. Still at 45 years old I look back at everything that man taught me about show cattle, about livestock in general, and about life. Jimbo took time for everything and most importantly the little things. His influence on my journey throughout this life has always been immense. I miss him every day. The second person who really hooked me was the guy that sold me my first set of Meyer 734 heifers in 1996. Bob May has always been a role model to me as I’ve proceeded to grow within this show cattle community. Working for him and Bruce in my freshman year of college was something I’ll never forget. His integrity and honesty are unrivaled and he’s always humble in day-to-day life. I’ve learned a lot from him in my approach to our craft and he’s always been a true friend. When I finally grew up (which took forever) and Paulsen Cattle went from a part time hobby to full time career and passion, we went from private treaty sales to online to eventually full-fledged auctions that started with Girls Gone Wild and then into what is now Divas and Donors the Exclusive. Divas and Donors is in its 12th season now and I could not be prouder of the numerous champions on all levels of competition this sale has produced and what I’m even more proud of is the number of breed leading donors that have come from this program. It’s awesome to see customers succeed on all levels and facets of the industry.
The genetics that have previously been sold in our sales have become cornerstones in so many leading programs. Nothing makes us prouder than to help customers sell something out of our genetics. Cows like Diamond, Hailey, Whisper and most recently Envy, 2/75, and Roxi are hot across the nation right now and we couldn’t be more excited for the future of our genetics. As our sales have evolved so have our partnerships. Nelson Mandela once said “There is no passion to be found in playing small. Or living a life less than the one you’re capable of”. If you’re passionate about growing and building something, surround yourself with people that want the same and that push you. That want to see you succeed and you want the same for them. Jamie and Jackie Campbell have had an incredible influence on our program, starting as customers, becoming very close friends, and now our absolute mainstay partner in DND. Their commitment to our joint vision is steadfast and truly special. With the addition of Blind Badger Ranch, Hawk Livestock, Steck Cattle, and Jackson Cattle, our multi breed line up at sale time is as “Exclusive” as it comes with not only the country’s best livestock but backed by the nation’s elite breeders and friends. This group is truly second to none. We are also new to the other side of the ring but a few years ago started a joint venture with McLaughlin Cattle Co to take a diversified approach to the show steer world that has been extremely fruitful in a short time. Again, surrounding ourselves with like-minded great people! The key to all this though at the end of the day is drive, support, patience, and love at home. Our family has been lucky enough to win two junior nationals, 3 Reserve Supremes at the Iowa State Fair and numerous
66

68
champions at KC, Louisville, Denver, and OKC. Carmen and the boys are just as important and then some as any other component in our program. My wife handles so
not ever accept not having the upper hand. It fuels our fires. We both have discussed before how much harder we push due to our adversaries, even more so than our supporters. His relentless work ethic, his kind heart, his ability to be one incredible big brother and role model, and his ability to make me want to be a better man every day. I can never thank him enough for that. His success in the showring on major levels I am incredibly proud of but who he is as a person, even more. At the end of the day, we let our customers success do the talking. The ads, the banners, and the Pulse tell the story. We are all extremely humbled to be asked to be in the Showtimes. We’re just normal people trying our best in an industry we love with a never-ending dream. Can’t wait to see y’all this junior national and state fair season and of course this fall at Divas and Donors Exclusive! See y’all in Dixon! ■

many things both on the home front and helping with the program on
top of a crazy busy career with Ralco. I’m not me and we’re not us without her. The two youngest, Cope and Huck, are wild and busy. Huck is a daddy’s boy and Cope “the Intern” is
a mama’s boy but he is my mini me. Cope showed for the first time this year and had great success
and can’t wait until next year. And then there’s Kinnick or KP as we all call him. I know everyone brags about their kids. We love them all the same and we bond with them in special ways. Kinnick has always been so driven. So, determined. He always shared my type A personality and did

Joe and Joelynn Rathmann of Smithville, Texas are excited to be at the Illinois State Fair as Officials of their Steer Show slated for Saturday August 12. Joe and Joelynn own and operate Rathmann Show Cattle; a multi- generational 40-year-old ranch that specializes in club calf production with an emphasis on show steer sales. Both Joe and Joelynn were members of successful junior and senior collegiate livestock judging programs (Joe being an All American in 2009 while judging for Blinn, then on the 2010 team at Texas A&M University. Joelynn was a 2008 All American at Butler, completing her collegiate judging career as a member of the 2009 team at Texas A&M.)
"However, more impressive would be Joe’s coaching career. For 7 years he was the livestock judging coach at Blinn college and led many teams to national titles." Joelynn owns and operates her own livestock photography business and has pictured livestock around the country. Though both have stepped away from their previous careers to raise their son Brigham and dedicate their time to the ranch, they can still be found in and out of the ring, working and coaching their show families whenever possible. They are thrilled and honored to sort the steers at this year’s Illinois State Fair!

ILLINOIS STATE FAIR MARKET STEER JUDGES JOE AND JOELYNN RATHMANN ANSWER NINE OF OUR QUESTIONS!
86
ONE What are you most excited about judging the 2023 Illinois State Fair Market Steer Show? The quality of the cattle! Barn talk claims this show in the real deal, and we’re excited to see it. TWO What are the top 5 things you look for in a Champion? Joe - Best summed up by a 5 year old that I judged 12 years ago: “Big feet, Big butt, Big belly, Loooong neck and fuzzy ears. Me- “Why fuzzy ears?” 5yo - “Because he’ll probably be hairy everywhere else. Oh and dad said you better start with big feet or you won’t be able to have any of the other things.” THREE What is your biggest pet peeve in the ring? Joelynn - I sadly have a lot, but I think a lack of sportsmanship trumps all other pet peeves. It is understandable to be upset if your animal does not place as well as you’d expected, but ultimately we are willingly participating in a subjective sport. Joe - To be blunt, when exhibitors are outwardly rude about their placing. FOUR How have the trends changed in the past few years? Joe - The biggest change has been how good and deep the quality has become. Shows seem to be so much more competitive now, that it’s not enough to just be solid, you better be complete and have an out there extra piece or two to win. FIVE What is something that most people don’t know about you? Joelynn - hands down, that I’m the critical one of the two of us. Joe likes to tell people that I make it hard to sell baby steers, I’m too hard on everything. But seriously, one of my favorite things to do with I’m picturing in the ring is watch feet. I’m extremely critical when it comes to structure and hoof shape (blame it on
87
88
my two collegiate judging coaches). I’ll even follow a creature I really like, just to try to see the bottom of their feet. Toes tell so much about stock, and I thoroughly enjoy breaking down an animal’s build. Also, Joe will never actually admit this but - he is the best ear getter in the industry. If you disagree then you’ve simply never seen him get ears. It’s beyond impressive. Whether it’s a picture pen or a backdrop, he’s the real MVP. SIX What is the best part about judging together? Joelynn - We’re pretty parallel in terms of what we like in cattle - and we really don’t argue. Aside from the
obvious of getting to sort a fat steer show next to my best friend, I think the best part will be just getting to talk cattle with someone who sees them so similarly. We both get high on certain traits, and we both admit when the other is reading a creature more correctly. Should make for a pretty fun day. Joe - I’m just really glad that I won’t have to listen to another one of her several hour long critique of all my decisions on the way home. Joelynn - I stand by my answer. SEVEN What would you consistently like each exhibitor to take away from you judging?
Joe - You are never judged for who you are or beat by someone because of who they were - rather you’re solely placed on the phenotypic presence of your calf. It doesn’t change who you are, nor does it change the effort you’ve put into it. EIGHT What is your best food you’ve had at a State Fair? Joelynn - if you’ve ever been to the Pennsylvania Farm Show (technically my home ‘state fair’), then you know there is only one answer here - the vanilla milkshakes. NINE What has been your greatest accomplishment or memory? Have you met our son?

on raising club calves. Looking back, I laugh
an idiot during his class, so much so that Dr. Schaake pulled him 5th and while he was studying the top four Rudolph backed into him and knocked him over. I was really embarrassed but Schaake got up and handled him one more time and then motioned me back over to the top four to study further. He ended up working him all the way to first and using him for breed champion. I’ll never forget showing in the astrodome for the Grand Champion selection during the rodeo.” Ryan said it was hard to believe that just six years later he was coaching collegiately against someone as legendary as Dr. Schaake. Before Ryan got to that point though, he had always planned on attending Texas A&M where most of his family had gone to school. However, right before he graduated high school, his father’s good friend, Jerry McPeak, persuaded him to head north to Connors State College in Warner, OK to judge livestock. “It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I judged a little in FFA but I had never even given a set of reasons before college. It forced me to leave my comfort zone and it yielded a network of personal and professional relationships that benefit me to this day. Coach (McPeak) was as tough on us as any mentor you could imagine. I believe we started the fall semester with 42 freshmen and by winter workout we were down to 16! His objective
because all my friends give me a hard time for being so tight fiscally…that was a by- product of my father. He wouldn’t even spend money on ear tags for our cows or their calves. My mom would get so frustrated working cows with him because he would reference them by their pedigree and what calf she had in the past to identify them since they didn’t have a number. Still today, my dad hesitates to A.I. to a bull if he is priced over $30 a straw. Dad never wanted to get rich. He just wanted to sell steers to kids at a fair price so hopefully they could have a good experience and make money on their projects in the end. His customers were very loyal to him because of it. Today my brother, Joe is back home running the operation with my mom and dad and his wife, Joelynn. It is no coincidence that many of their customers are parents who have kids that are showing who once upon a time bought calves from my dad growing up. That makes me very proud to hear that because I think it says a lot about how my dad treated people.” Ryan showed steers and heifers, most of which they raised themselves. One of his proudest moments was exhibiting the champion Maine Anjou steer at Houston in 1996 a red calf, named Rudolph they raised out of a Cunia descendant. “Dr. Schaake judged that year. Rudolph acted like
yan is judging the market steer shows at the Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa State Fair’s this summer and the Tulsa State Fair this fall. Ryan is a beef cattle educator
and researcher, a livestock judging coach and judge, and most importantly a husband and father.
The phenotypic outcome of every show project is dependent upon the animal’s genetics (minor) and the influence of their environment (majority). Ironically, the kids that show these animals are influenced by the same two variables. The environmental influences are a blend of a child’s upbringing, the mentors they’ve had along the way, and their life experiences. Collectively, they shape one’s character and the success of their life. For Ryan, he was raised in a small, rural, German Catholic community called Rockne which is a half hour southeast of Austin,TX on his family’s cow-calf operation. “I owe my core values to my parents, James and Janet. My parents taught me to work hard, remain humble, and prioritize my faith. My mom worked for the Texas Retirement System and my dad served as an ag teacher in Elgin until I was about 8 or so. After that, they ranched full-time focusing 148
was to make us more mentally tough than anyone else we would compete against. It didn’t matter if it was a downpour or a blizzard, we practiced. Coach galvanized the grit and determination that I had been brought up with but took it to the next level. He ran me as a freshman at Denver so during the spring semester of my sophomore year he allowed me to help him coach my peers since I was out of eligibility. That pre-senior college coaching experience helped set the stage for my coaching success later in time.” After junior college, Ryan attended Texas A&M University where he judged in 2001. “As my father-in- law always says, you are
only as good as those you choose to surround yourself with. Our starting five at Louisville, consisted of two eventual lawyers, two PhDs, and a commodity broker. I earned some of my closest friends on that team and I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Chris Skaggs mentor me on how to be a professional. Thereafter, Dr. Skaggs gave me the privilege of coaching three teams at Texas A&M while I achieved a Masters in Beef Cattle Reproduction under Dr. David Forrest.” All three teams Ryan coached were National Champions (2002-2004). Some students on those teams included Shellie Collins, Jason Lackey, David Groschke, Jacob and Ingrid Tusa, Kelton Mason,
